Goin To The Chapelon The Dunes

SANDFEST PORT ARANSAS – TEXAS

What could be more symbolic of a love that is built to last than a marriage that begins in the hallowed halls of the oldest functional consecrated church on Mustang Island? As one of the staunch pillars of the Eight Wonders of Port Aransas, and having stood the test of time against hurricanes and dune erosion, the Chapel on the Dunes represents enduring love in more ways than one.

AboutIn the late 1930s the Chapel on the Dunes was built by author, astronomer, artist, and Poet Laureate, Aline Carter. Carter was passionate about sharing her knowledge with local children and held cake and ice cream socials after Sunday School each week in the chapel.

Built on one of the highest points in Port Aransas and overlooking the ocean, the outside of the chapel is striking enough on its own, but in 1972, artist John Patrick Cobb painted the whitewashed interior with inspiring murals that still inspire awe upon entry. The murals are Biblical in nature, with the New Testament depicted on the north wall and the Old Testament represented on the South wall.

The passion and intensity of Carters faith can be felt by all who enter the Chapel on the Dunes, and the sanctuary is still owned by her family members.

The Chapel On The Dunes Endures In Port Aransas

Mustang Islands oldest continuously operating church has survived decades of hurricanes and comes out shining

High atop a sand dune in Port Aransas, a small white sanctuary overlooks the ocean. Seagulls glide in the salty air above swaying sea oats and flowering cacti. The Chapel on the Dunes is the oldest continuously functioning church on Mustang Island, and over the past eight decades, as visitors and hurricanes came through, it has become a symbol of strength and longevity in this coastal community. Its like our own little Sistine Chapel, says Cliff Strain, executive director of the Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association. The group lists the chapel as one of its Eight Wonders of Port Aransas, a collection of tourist spots including such institutions as Farley Boat Works and the Tarpon Inn.

Chapel on the Dunes

It has been through some of the worst direct-hit hurricanes, and it just comes out shining, says Marline Carter Lawson, Alines granddaughter. The chapel even weathered Hurricane Harvey, with the exception of a few lost roof shingles and one broken window.

The Chapel overlooks Port Aransas Old Town neighborhood.

Hanie & Jason: Mansion By The Sea Wedding In Port Aransas

June 4, 2014 by Josh Baker

We love our clients, I know I mention that over and over and it is the truth so it bears repeating. Stephanie is co-owner of Bettie Bangs Salon and we have worked together on various projects over the years. She loves our work and I love working with her so when she called up asking to come to Port Aransas, Texas for the weekend to photograph their wedding at the Mansion by the Sea I jumped at the chance. You might have already seen their sunset engagements but we continued our theme of water and sun with Jason and Stephanie for their wedding day.

The sunlight was oozing through the palm trees and the ocean breeze kept the rising Texas heat off of our shoulders when Stephanie and Jason said I do. Friends and Family gathered round the rest of the evening, well, until the cake begun flying around the room. I must say that I have never seen a more committed wedding party as 20 or so guests walked out into the bay to get a unique group photo.

Thanks for having us out Stephanie, look forward to seeing the life you and Jason build together!JB
