Preheat oven to 350°. While it heats, pulse the Oreo cookies several times in a food processor. Add the melted butter and then pulse for a few more seconds until rough cookie crumbs remain. Dump the cookie crumbs out onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread out evenly into a single layer. Bake for about 10 minutes then remove and let cool completely.

Once cool, in a medium mixing bowl, combine the cooled cookie crumbs with the chocolate Magic Shell. Stir to coat the crumbs evenly and then spread back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet in a thin layer. Freeze for 30 minutes and then crumble into small, coarse pieces. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

Editors tip: Baking the Oreo crumbs helps make them extra dry and crisp so that they dont become soggy from the moisture of the ice cream. Its an extra step thats well worth the effort.

It’s More Unhealthy Than You Think

does dairy queen sell ice cream cakes

No one’s expecting something healthy when they head to DQ for dessert, but it’s still shocking just how bad some of their dessert items really are. Check out their nutritional information and you’ll find there are some decent items , but even picking up a medium Blizzard is likely to set you back between 20 and 30 grams of fat and around 100 grams of sugar. To put that in perspective, the American Heart Association recommends maxing daily sugar intake at 36 grams for men and 25 grams for women. Go for a large Blizzard, and you might be looking at up to 120, 130, and even 150 grams of sugar. Add an extra topping or two, and you’re talking hundreds of additional calories. A guilty pleasure, indeed!

Where Did Dairy Queen Originate

You can trace Dairy Queens history back more than 80 years to August 4, 1938. John Fremont McCullough and his son Alex were testing a soft frozen dairy treat and convince a family friend, Sherb Noble, to let them sell the treat in his ice cream store.

Over the course of two hours, they dished up more than 1,600 frozen treats, and people were hooked.

How To Make An Ice Cream Cake

First lets talk about the cake pan. I used an 8 by 3 inch cake pan, because I prefer a taller cake. You could definitely use a 9 inch pan though, and a springform pan would certainly be convenient. All according to what youre going for.

Once youve got your pan, youll want to line the inside of it with clear wrap. Now its time to make your cake!

  • Chocolate Ice Cream: Add your chocolate ice cream and spread it evenly into the pan. Pop the pan and ice cream into the freezer for about 30 minutes so it firms up just a bit.
  • Chocolate fudge layer: Youre actually going to make chocolate ganache itll just be a little thinner than normal and have some corn syrup in it. The corn syrup is really essential here. It helps it stay softer even when frozen, giving it that fudgy consistency. Its not too firm and not too soft and drippy. The fudge layer is added on top of the ice cream and then frozen for another 10 minutes or so.
  • Vanilla ice cream: Add the vanilla ice cream on top and freeze the cake until its firm. When its done, frost it with my homemade whipped cream. It uses some powdered sugar to keep it from wilting. It stays stable for days and days making it ideal for an ice cream cake. Decorate the ice cream cake as you like for your occasion and youre ready to go!

Ice Cream With A Side Of Dirt

When you take a bite of your favorite version of Dairy Queen soft serve, you might be serving yourself an extra helping of dirt, sour milk, or cockroaches. Between 2015 to 2019, Dairy Queens across the country made local and national headlines for consistently violating health and safety violations.

In 2015, a Dairy Queen in Nogales, Arizona was shut down when local health authorities found cockroaches in the kitchen and expired milk being used for milkshakes . In 2016, inspectors shut down a Dairy Queen in Tampa, Florida after finding cockroaches in the soft-serve ice cream machine and under the Blizzard machine . In 2018, health inspectors found 12 violations at a Dairy Queen in Shreveport, Louisiana, including lack of a food safety certificate . Ultimately, NBC News took its Dateline cameras undercover and found 184 “critical violations” across 100 Dairy Queens nationwide . In 2019, health inspectors in Richmond, Virginia found dead flies on a prep table and pink and black mold in the ice machine at a local Dairy Queen . In Cape Coral, Florida, inspectors closed a local Dairy Queen for three days after finding… can you guess what? Roaches .

Suffice to say, if you’re planning a trip to Dairy Queen any time soon, maybe check that their food safety certificate is up to date.

    The Blizzard Hits The Scene

Dairy Queens Blizzard treat has probably been their most famous menu item since it was introduced in 1985. They sold over 100 million Blizzards that first year.

The Blizzard dates back even further, though, to the 1960s. The original Blizzard was a thick milkshake that was so thick and creamy, they could be tipped upside down without spilling. That tradition carried over to the current Blizzards, with a company policy stating that employees have to flip them upside down when theyre handing them to the customer.

Milestone Years In Dairy Queen History

Icecream cakes at Dairy Queen!! How to decorate must watch!

With nearly 80 years of history, there are a lot of milestones in the Dairy Queen story. But some of them are particularly memorable, especially their best-known treats.

The first foray beyond cones, sundaes, and tubs of ice cream were malts and shakes in 1949. Those were followed by banana splits in 1951, still one of their most popular menu items.

The world-famous Dilly Bar was added in 1955, and the Brazier locations that started selling burgers and other food followed soon after in 1958.

Dairy Queens Mr. Misty slushies came on the scene in 1961 and the Buster Bar later that same decade, in 1968.

If you were a kid in the 1970s you might remember the word scrumpdillyishus. If you said the magic word when you ordered, you could get a Peanut Buster Parfait for only 49 cents.

How To Store And Transport Ice Cream Cake

This should be considered an extreme sport! As noted above, investing in a simple cake carrier will be your secret to success. Prior to starting your ice cream cake, we recommend clearing an area of your freezer that is large enough to allow the cake carrier to fit and sit level inside. If you have a drawer freezer, make sure your freezer opens wide enough .

You can safely and successfully transport an ice cream cake using a large cooler or insulated food carrier. The trick is to make sure the vessel you are using is large enough to fit your cake carrier along with several ice packs or bags of ice. For best results, we recommend letting your ice cream cake freeze for 24 hours in the freezer before transporting it to make sure everything is as frozen as possible. We also suggest packing your cake at the very last minute before your departure.

Dont forget to make sure you have a place to store your cake when you arrive at your destination. Your best bet will be to have a freezer to transfer your ice cream cake to when you arrive to keep it frozen until youre ready to serve.
