The couple soon moved to Virginia, where Nancy taught elementary school and Bill worked at the Pentagon. He started helping out on weekends at his father-in-laws seafood market in 1964. The idea for the communal tables came from the Pentagon, Devine says. At that time, on each corner on each floor, there was a cafeteria, but there wasnt one chair in them, because if they seated those bureaucrats, theyd never get them back to work.

Three years in the federal government turned out to be plenty for Bill, and the couple moved back to Baltimore to work full-time in the family business. Shortly before his death in 1990, Nancys father gave two-thirds of the business to her and one-third to Bill.

Faidleys remained popular throughout the 70s and 80s, but it didnt achieve food mecca status until Nancy started fiddling around with a new, all-lump crab cake recipe in 1987. At that time, Faidleys sold a cake made with backfin meat and one made with claw that cost a buck. She created a mayonnaise-based saucethe same one she uses todaybecause she thought it enhanced the crab without overpowering it. She didnt want to put much bread in it, but because she sought the golden hue and crisp texture that frying provides, she needed a binder. Hence, the broken saltines.

Delicate, delicious, creamy and sweet, it may not quite be heaven, but by my reckoning its a persuasive preview, wrote R.W. Apple Jr. in The New York Times.

Located in a cute “out of date” market. I noticed a couple reviews emphasizing that the market was in an unsafe area, so I ubered there as I was going by myself. It ended up being totally fine. I walked back home. I did go during the daytime though, so I can’t speak for at night. The Faidley’s line stayed pretty long , but moved quickly. Now for the meat of the review! I got the jumbolump crab cake and the deviled eggs . The crab cake was soft and creamy on the inside and had a lovely light crunch on the outside. I’m not a huge crab cake girl, as I find they’re usually dry and bready… Faidleys definitely gets it right. Now for the deviled eggs…. Tbh they just tasted like potato salad in an egg. I prefer the ones I make athome, but that might also be because I’m used to that taste. I didn’t try the oysters, but I noticed a sign saying they recycle oyster shells, so A+ for that 🙂

I didn’t know what a “real” crab cake was until I had Faidleys! My crab cake experience has been an over breaded flat patty but Faidleys was pure crab chunks shaped like a tennis ball. It was my first time in Baltimore so we of course had a crab cake crawl and Faidley’s takes the #1 spot. I went on a Monday for a late lunch and there was only a couple others in the restaurant. I was able to get 2 crab cakes within 5 minutes. Cute spot and a definite must try in Baltimore.

Interior Of Faidleys Seafood

While historic, Lexington Market wasnt your typical farmers market. It was located in a grittier neighborhood of Baltimore. And, Faidleys Seafood was not your typical restaurant. It was less of a restaurant and more of a fish market and raw bar selling all types of fresh seafood including crab, shrimp, oysters, clams, and lobster.

What I found great was how you could order and eat lunch from the restaurant and then take fresh seafood to go. I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the fish market which reminded me of other fish markets I have visited on my travels.

If you are planning to stay at eat, you should know what to expect. Dont expect table service. There werent even tables for guests to sit down at and eat. Instead, there were circular standing tables scattered around the fish market along with three communal style tables. This was no big deal for me and added to the experience.

You could always take your order to go, but I wouldnt recommend eating in the area directly surrounding the market. While it hurts me to talk poorly about some of the people in the area, the constant harassment for food, money, and cigarettes was not enjoyable.

The Prime Rib

After decades in business, the classic Baltimore steakhouse gets almost everything right, and their crab cake is a shining example. Delicately broiled and brown on the outside, it retained the perfect amount of inner moisture while still holding up beneath the fork. It tasted great, too. One caveat? The crab is from Florida, not Maryland. If that were made with Maryland crab it would have cost $60, our server informed us. Instead, its $18 as an appetizer. Pappas Restaurant and Sports Bar

This 8 oz. bad boy from Pappas Restaurant and Sports Bar in Parkville is a favorite of Oprah Winfreys, a fact that you’ll no doubt be reminded of anytime Pappas comes up in conversation. The crab is sourced from around the world, according to a manager. During a recent visit, our $20.99 crab cake tasted wonderfully fresh, though the subtle meat flavor was nearly overwhelmed by an eggy filler.1725 Taylor Ave., Parkville. 410-661-4357. pappasparkville.com

An astounding six sets of relatives work at the 3,500-square-foot original. Remel Watson has been there for 36 years. Her 23-year-old daughter, Donya Fleming, for five. Donyas uncle, Lou, has worked there since 1979. He started selling fish, has shucked countless oysters , and now is a manager.

Me and Mr. Bill are close, says Fleming. I only spent 10 years with my dad, and I spent 40 with him. He taught me a lot about business and life. Do the right thing, work for what you want, and believe in your dreams.

Donell Kindell, now 40, started at Faidleys when he was 14. Ten years ago, Nancy chose him to become the only person other than her to make crab cakes. The promotion wasnt quite as auspicious as it might seem.

At the time, I had gotten in trouble, says Kindell, whose father also works at Faidleys. To keep me from getting back into that same kind of trouble, she made me come make crab cakes next to her. I think that she saw that I was a good kid. I wasnt a troublemaker. It was just something that happened that one time. As long as youre honest with her, shell give you a second chance.

Nancy doesnt remember this story, but laughs when its recounted to her.

Bill and I both feel that were better off giving people second chances, she says. Things happen in peoples lives. We know that. I also use it as a teaching opportunity for a lot of these young people who can learn from their mistakes so that they dont make them again.

Faidleys Seafood: Crabcakes At Lexington Market In Baltimore

Harboring thoughts of Baltimore

Faidleys Seafood, located inside historic Lexington Market, is a Baltimore institution famous for their jumbo lump crabcakes and fresh seafood. Faidleys Seafood, which was founded all the way back in 1886, is one of the most well known purveyors of fresh seafood in the Chesapeake Bay region.

Crabcakes, which are a symbol of Baltimore cuisine, are balls of crab which are deep fried until golden brown. If Faidleys Seafood is known for one dish, it would have to be their award-winning jumbo lump crabcakes. They sell over 1,500 of them a day using the same proven recipe and process they have used for over 30 years.

And, they are proud of their accomplishments, which you will see prominently displayed around the restaurant.

You might be surprised to hear that Baltimores historic Lexington Market is one of the longest-running markets in the world. The market, which is located on its original site, has been operating since 1782. Not only is the market the oldest in America but it is almost as old as America itself.

Today, Lexington Market is composed of a main market along with shops on Lexington Street between Liberty Street and Greene Street. Inside the main market building are small eateries, shops, and stalls selling everything from meat, to seafood, to produce.

One of these eateries, which is probably the most famous and largest in the market, is Faidleys Seafood.

Best Crab Cakes In Baltimore

BY Tamar Alexia Fleishman

People sometimes forget that the DelMarVa area of which Maryland is part of has been settled for over 400 years. Early settlers brought Renaissance cooking techniques from Europe, which included making all kinds of loaves, savory and sweet pies, as well as crumbles. This involved mixing the main protein with seasoned bread crumbs and fat before cooking. The common technique accomplished many things: stretching out the expensive/hard to obtain ingredient, preserving it to some degree before the days of refrigeration, and of course, flavor.

Baltimore has its own takes on crab cakes, they’ve become world-famous. Locals get the hankering for a traditional flavor though they’re more expensive than they used to be. Tourists can’t seem leave town without sampling one .

Certainly, there’s a sub-industry for listing the best crab cake. Hey, you’re reading this list! Publications have competing annual lists, vehemently disagreeing with each other. There are a lot of factors that go into what makes a great crab cake, not the least of which involves personal palates. Historically, crab cakes were made with mostly backfin meat, which has a distinct flavor. Modern tastes tend to adore the sweeter, milder and more costly jumbo lump meat. How much breading do you like? Some people like a creation that’s more akin to Crab Imperial, it’s so creamy and rich. Others love the crunch that’s brought on by fried bread crumbs .
