Ingredients Needed For A Dog Birthday Cake

Making A Dog Birthday Cake

The ingredients for this cake are super simple! Theyre all human-grade and easily digestible by your pets. Garnish your cake with your dogs favorite treats for the ultimate doggy dessert! Measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Whole Wheat Flour: I like using whole wheat flour as my cake base for its added fiber. If your dog has a gluten intolerance, you can use gluten-free flour instead.
  • Baking Soda: Helps your cake rise.
  • Vegetable Oil: Adds moisture and helps ingredients stick together.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter: Make sure its Xylitol-free! Xylitol is toxic to animals. See more below on why you need to avoid this ingredient.
  • Plain Applesauce: Make sure your applesauce doesnt have any added sugars. Apples are a great source of fiber for your pup!
  • Pumpkin Puree: Not only is pumpkin loaded with fiber, but dogs love it! You can buy this canned or make it at home.
  • Shredded Carrots: Carrots are a great snack for dogs! I like to shred mine or cut them into very small pieces to avoid any choking.
  • Milk: Adds moisture to the cake mix.
  • Egg: Used to bind everything together.

Can You Give A Dog Birthday Cake

Yes, you can give a dog birthday cake.

Although these cakes are made with dog-safe ingredients, they do not have real nutritional value. The act of giving a dog a birthday cake is mostly for the human element, but there are some more superficial benefits. Here are those benefits:

  • Fun Break from Regular Treats. Giving dogs a birthday cake instead of traditional treats can break up the monotony of giving them the same thing day after day. They will have something different presented to them and, especially if it is a whole cake, it can be a real treat they werent expecting.
  • Enriched Treat-Giving Experience. This is more of a benefit for humans than dogs but the act of making the cake and seeing your dog enjoy it can be extremely rewarding as a dog owner.
  • Healthy Dog Treats. When you make a doggy birthday cake yourself, you know what is going into it, much like you can make homemade dog treats. Homemade dog cakes can be made with pumpkin, bananas, peanut butter, etc., to make them rich in nutrients such as potassium, calcium, and vitamin A.

What To Put In A Dog Birthday Cake

As you all probably know, Tilly is my favorite thing. So, we wanted to spoil Tilly rotten for her birthday with all of her favorite things. And if you know Tilly, you know her favorite foods are pumpkin, greek yogurt, and peanut butter . Naturally we landed on a peanut butter pumpkin cake held together with a Tilly approved peanut butter and greek yogurt frosting.

Even though this cake is made with safe ingredients, youll still want to limit the amount of dog bday cake your puppy eats. This dog birthday cake recipe will make a small 6 inch cake, but we still wouldnt recommend giving the entire cake to your pup. We gave Tilly a small piece and she was more than happy.

What if I dont have whole wheat flour?

First, always consult with YOUR veterinarian about what is best for YOUR dog. I personally prefer using whole wheat flour or oat flour for these treats. Ive made them with both and my dog had zero complaints either way. Dont have whole wheat flour or oat flour? You can substitute white wheat flour or all-purpose. Just be sure to feed them to your pup in moderation!

    Storage

Keep these in an air tight container or zipped bag for easy storage or make many batches at once and store them in the freezer! No need to thaw before rewarding your dog with a frozen homemade pumpkin dog treat they last longer served that way.

How To Make Pumpkin Dog Treats

Lets walk through what youll need and what youll do. Reminder, the full printable recipe, with exact measurements and instructions, is found at the bottom of the page. This portion of the post is for discussion, helpful tips and answering common questions about the recipe.

    Ingredients

These treats use ingredients you probably have in your pantry already! All you need for the pumpkin dog treats recipe are as follows:

    • Flour: For this recipe I used whole wheat flour. Check with your vet to see which flour they would recommend for your dog.
    • Eggs: Make sure to grab large size eggs.
    • Natural Peanut Butter: Natural peanut butter is the only way to go. Most importantly avoid any peanut butter that contains the sweetener Xylitol, which can be poisonous to dogs.
    • Pumpkin Puree: Double check that you are using pure canned pumpkin puree. Often cans of pumpkin pie mix sit right next to pumpkin puree in the store, and you dont want all those extra ingredients in your pumpkin dog treats.
    • Ground Cinnamon

    Steps To Take

Mix together all ingredients to combine everything to form a dough. This may be easier with an electric or stand mixer.

This will be a very thick and crumbly dough. Add a little bit of water to help moisten the ingredients, then you will be able to work and knead the dough. Only add a tablespoon or so as you go. You want the dough to end up being a dry and thick consistency.

The great thing about this recipe is that its made with all-natural ingredients. No fillers here! Only the best for your furry friends! Fresh veggies, peanut butter, and yogurt are all great sources of fiber, protein, and calcium. Like any dog treat, however, this cake is best given to your dog in moderation. Its best shared with other furry friends! Without further ado, lets get making a dessert your pooch is going to go crazy over!
