How Do You Make Baking Powder
Combine half a teaspoon of cream of tartar and a quarter teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a small mixing bowl to produce baking powder. This offers the equivalent of one teaspoon of baking powder in a single serving. To produce self-raising flour, combine one teaspoon baking powder with 110 grams plain flour.
How Do You Store A Cookie Cake
Just like most cookies, this giant cookie cake is best stored in a large, air-tight container. The whole cake can be kept in a cake or pie keeper or even put under glass in a cake dome. Individual slices can be put in smaller containers or even zip-top bags.
If you cant finish the cake within a few days, you can stash extra slices in the freezer for up to a year. This treat is easier to store without the frosting, but buttercream can last in the freezer for up to two months.
The Basics Of Baking A Cake
When kids get interested in helping their parents in the kitchen, one of the first things they want to do is to help bake a cake. It’s a good choice because cake baking is often an easy, direct process and many recipes follow the same basic steps every time. Knowing the fundamentals allows you to approach making a cake from scratch with great confidence. For this step-by-step example, a chocolate cake is on the menu.

Is It Done Baking
Putting together a great cake batter is no simple task, so its a good idea to know what to look for when checking to make sure your cake has baked properly. Instead of just relying on the clock, here are a few other indicators that your cake is done:
- A cake is fully baked when a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, or with a few dry crumbs. If the toothpick appears wet with batter, then the cake is not done baking. Try baking for another few minutes before checking again.
- When done, the surface of the cake should spring back after being gently pressed with a fingertip.
- In some cases, the sides of the cake will start to pull away from the pan when done. Be careful, though if the cake shrinks too much, then it might be on its way to being overbaked
Once done, let your cakes cool on a wire rack. Wait for about 15 minutes, or until the cakes and pans are cool enough to handle, before removing the cakes from their pans. If you try to remove a cake that is too hot, it may break into pieces.
Let the cakes completely cool before trimming, cutting, or frosting. A chilled cake is much easier to cut and leaves less crumbs behind.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake
The Spruce Eats / Kristina Vanni
Chocolate chip cookie cake brings together two favorite sweets. Though it looks tricky, this tube cake is delightfully simple. You’ll make a moist pound cake batter with cream cheese, crush some crispy chocolate chip cookies, then layer the two elements in the pan. When cut, a beautiful ribbon of cookie is exposed and it’s sure to charm everyone who tastes it.

Vanilla Mug Cake Ingredients
This vanilla mug cake recipe only has eight ingredients and they are all very basic pantry ingredients that you probably already have on hand: flour, brown sugar, baking powder, milk, vanilla, butter, salt and chocolate chips!
I used all-purpose flour, but cake flour or bread flour would both work just fine.
If you dont have butter, you could substitute margarine or even vegetable oil, although I prefer the flavor that the real butter gives the cake.
Use the type of vanilla extract you prefer. I personally dont like the taste of pure vanilla extract, so I use imitation. Vanilla bean paste would be amazing if youre feeling fancy. You can also double the amount of vanilla if you want to increase flavor even more.
I have not tested non-dairy milk alternatives, so proceed with those substitutions at your own risk. A non-dairy milk could change the texture substantially.

Homemade Vanilla Cake Success
After lots of trial and error, here are my best tips and tricks for making a delicious vanilla cake recipe the first time around.
- Follow the recipe. Use the listed ingredients in the recipe card below.
- Use room temperature ingredients. Believe it or not, using butter, eggs, egg whites and milk all at room temperature yields you a smoother, better incorporated cake batter and thus, a better cake.
- Do not over-bake. Moist vanilla cake comes with just the right amount of time in the oven. Start checking your cake for doneness after 30 minutes and then go from there. Every oven is different so be sure you are checking your cake for doneness every few minutes once youre getting close to it being completely baked.
- Line baking pans with parchment paper. Parchment paper is my favorite kitchen tool. Your cakes will come out with ease!
- Cool completely before frosting. Frosting is primarily made up of butter and the butter will melt if your cakes are not cooled completely.

Ingredients In Honey Cake
Straightforward ingredients in this recipe! The key ingredient is of course, honey .
Honey Not all honey is created equal! The better quality the honey, the stronger the honey flavour and the better the result. To be honest though, while I dont want to encourage you to use dirtcheap mass-produced honey since it can sometimes be bulked out with sugar syrup, even if you use a regular mainstream brand the honey flavour will still absolutely come through in this cake.
Butter When recipes call for butter at room temperature or softened butter, the butter needs to be firmer than you probably think. Ideally it is 18°C / 64°F. This is soft enough to whip, but still cool enough that when you touch it, you dont end up with a slick of grease on your finger.
Butter that is too soft can lead to greasy cakes that do not rise as well as they should. In fact, this is one of the most common problems in cake making!
Heres a quick way to bring butter to room temperature: Cut fridge-cold butter into 1.5cm cubes . Scatter on a plate. Microwave 2 cups of cold tap water for 4 minutes on high in large mugs or a jug. Remove the warmed water, quickly put the butter plate in its place and close the door. DO NOT turn the microwave back on. The residual heat in the microwave air will soften the butter in 5 minutes.
Next is the honey syrup we use to soak the cake.

How To Make A Glaze For Bundt Cake
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon milk or warm water NOTE: You may need to add more to get desired consistency, but start with this amount.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
Place your powdered sugar into a large mixing bowl. Add the milk and vanilla flavoring.
Using a whisk or spoon, mix until ingredients come together. It will initially look like not enough liquid – keep mixing! You’ll be surprised how quickly it comes together.

The best chocolate cake recipe. Ever? There are plenty of claims for the best chocolate cake recipe. I get that. But with one bite of this decadent, moist chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, every single person around the table commented that this was the best chocolate cake theyd ever tasted.
So as for my house, this chocolate cake recipe now holds that honor.
As the compliments continued, I didnt begin to tell them how easy it was to make.
In all honesty, it is probably one of the easiest cakes Ive made in a long time, really, but I just smiled and thanked them.
As we continued on gobbling up the cake, drinking our coffee or iced cold milk, the compliments just kept coming.
Then the requests for the recipe started.
Thats generally when you know that folks really like what youve made if they ask for the recipe and tell you for what event they plan to serve it.
As a cook, that really is one of the highest compliments you can receive well, at least in my book.

Make A Basic Cookie Dough
Lisa Kaminski/Taste of Home
Making a cookie cake is very simple. You make the dough for this bake just like you would with any other chocolate chip cookie recipe. That means starting by creaming together the softened butter and sugars. Then add in the egg, egg yolk and vanilla, and mix until nice and creamy.
Next, add in your dry ingredientsflour, cornstarch, baking soda and saltand mix until just combined. Then, mix in a whole cup of chocolate chips.
Once the dough is together, you can go straight to the oven, but I prefer to let it chill for a bit in the fridge first . Letting the dough hang out for a minute can really help the flavors developits the secret to great shortbread. If youre tight on time, though, you can go right into baking.
Dont Overbake Or Overmix
One of the best moist cake rules of thumb is to make sure you dont overbake it. Be mindful of the clock or kitchen timer, and check for doneness 5 or 10 minutes before it goes off. Make sure you arent overmixing your batter, either, as this can incorporate too much air, causing your cake to fall and become dense and chewy.
