What Toppings Can I Use

While this easy dessert is perfect on its own you can fancy it up by adding toppings.

  • Ice Cream. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is perfect with it but you can enjoy yout favorite ice cream flavor with this gooey nutella mug cake.
  • Whipped cream. I like using homemade whipped cream and just a small amount works well.
  • Fresh Fruit. Adding some fresh berries like raspberries, strawberries or blackberries on top after it has cooked is a great option.
  • Frosting. If you were making a cake already and have left over frosting you can add some on top. I personally like using homemade buttercream on top of mine if I have any left over from when I was making a full sized cake.
  • Nutella. Add a dollop of nutella while it is still warm after heating and it will spread out on top making the perfect topping.

No Eggs In This Mug Cake

Yep, thats right. This recipe has been updated and there are now no eggs in this mug cake. Eggs tend to make mug cakes have a bit of a rubbery texture, so bye-bye eggs and hello tender, fluffy cake. As a bonus, its now vegetarian and can easily be made vegan too. I developed this recipe from wacky cake, a cake that has no eggs in it. I kept it pretty similar but switched out the water for milk.

Can I Add Anything To My Nutella Cake

These mug cakes are delicious on their own, but you can add some extra flair with the addition of a few toppings and mix-ins.

  • Nutella. Once made a spoonful of Nutella on top is a great addition. A little extra nutella goes a long way when putting it on top of the mug cake, but I also say there is no such thing as to much Nutella.
  • Add chocolate chips. While this dessert is already perfect you can add a tablespoon of chocolate chips to it if you would like to when mixing the batter.

Pro Tips For Making This Recipe

  • If you do not have a microwave-safe mug, you can use a ramekin or small microwave-safe bowl.
  • Make sure you use a large enough mug. The cookie inside of the mug rises more than a traditional cookie as it cooks, so you dont want it to overflow inside the microwave.
  • Fluff, spoon, and level your flour with a knife to keep from overpacking your measuring spoon with flour. Too much flour will lead the mug cookie to become dry.
  • I love serving the cookie with a scoop of ice cream, but you can also top it with whipped cream, chocolate ganache, or a caramel drizzle.
  • Not all microwaves are the same. I recommend keeping an eye on your mug to make sure you dont accidentally overcook the cookie. Do not microwave for more than one minute.
  • I like using real vanilla extract instead of artificial extract for the best flavor. Try my homemade vanilla extract if you want an easy DIY project.
  • A shorter, wider mug is ideal as it allows for more even cooking. I recommend a heavy ceramic mug with no metal.

Sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt are all used to make mugs. After the ingredients have been combined in a large microwave-safe mug, they are stirred into the batter, which is then cooked in the microwave for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Overmixing and using the incorrect temperature of butter result in a rubbery texture to mug cakes. When a cake is too hot, it can also turn into a rubbery mug cake. Radio waves are sent into the oven in order for the food to be cooked within the mugs. When the waves cause food to heat up, the water molecules in the food are excited.

Why Is This The Best Easy Chocolate Mug Cake Recipe Out There

Seriously though, youre probably so over mug cake recipes and youre probably rolling your eyes at me right now but STOP! I promise you this isnt like any other mug cake out there. Ive tried a bunch of mug cakes and I hated them.

I thought they were a really neat concept for a quick dessert fix but nothing would ever beat baking an entire cake or cupcake. I hated that all the mug cakes came out SPONGY and they had the grossest texture.

Last week, I was CRAVING chocolate like none other. It was a pretty dire situation. We didnt have any desserts in the house because I hadnt been baking and I didnt want to run out to get anything so I thought Id give a mug cake a shot.

It ended up turning into a recipe development hour because the first batch came out horrible. Like, I threw it in the trash can and it was just one lumpy sponge thing.

The second one was slightly better but still really bad. The third, I switched out some ingredients and added a little bit more of some and it came out how I wanted but I knew it couldve been better so on the fourth try, I finally got it to work and the exact texture I wanted.
