If you think we all scream for store-bought ice cream, just wait until you try ice cream made the old fashioned way at home. I promise its not as difficult or labor-intensive as it sounds. Thanks to technology and just a little elbow grease, the right old fashioned ice cream maker delivers all of the flavor and creaminess of homemade ice cream with just a fraction of the hands-on time and work.

For so many of us, the phrase homemade ice cream conjures up a very specific image: of a big wooden bucket filled with ice cubes and salt. Inside the central aluminum bucket you would add all of your ingredients. Then, all around that central bucket, you would place your layers of ice cubes and salt. Salt water has a lower freezing point than regular water , so getting the right 3:1 ratio of ice cubes to salt was always an important step to ensure your ice cream would have the right consistency.     Preheat oven to 350°. While it heats, pulse the Oreo cookies several times in a food processor. Add the melted butter and then pulse for a few more seconds until rough cookie crumbs remain. Dump the cookie crumbs out onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread out evenly into a single layer. Bake for about 10 minutes then remove and let cool completely.

    Once cool, in a medium mixing bowl, combine the cooled cookie crumbs with the chocolate Magic Shell. Stir to coat the crumbs evenly and then spread back onto the parchment-lined baking sheet in a thin layer. Freeze for 30 minutes and then crumble into small, coarse pieces. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

    Editors tip: Baking the Oreo crumbs helps make them extra dry and crisp so that they dont become soggy from the moisture of the ice cream. Its an extra step thats well worth the effort.

    Ferrero Roche No Churn Ice Cream

    In a small bowl whisk together sweetened condensed milk and vanilla, set aside.

    In a large bowl whip the cream until stiff peaks form, add a little whipped cream to the vanilla/sweetened condensed milk mixture, , then fold in the rest of the whipped cream mixture and combine gently until completely combined. Then fold in the coarsely chopped Ferrero Roche chocolates and add the Nutella swirl 2-3 times just to add.

    Remove the base from the freezer and spread evenly the Ferrero Roche Ice Cream over the vanilla ice cream, then spread with the remaining vanilla ice cream. Place in an airtight container or freezer bag and freeze 3-5 hours or over night.

    Remove the cake from the freezer once it is completely frozen. Drizzle 3/4 of the melted chocolate over the ice cream cake, place the Ferrero Roche whole chocolate on top then drizzle the chocolates with the remaining melted chocolate. If cake is frozen solid then let it sit until it is easier to cut, about 20-30 minutes. Running your knife under hot water will make it easier to cut also.

    I really wanted as much chocolate as possible, so I made the base with chocolate wafer cookies and melted butter. Although you could use graham cracker crumbs or even your favourite cookie of choice as a base.

    I wanted to make this birthday cake as easy as possible, so I used whipped topping for the frosting. You can use the kind thats sold frozen or in the dairy aisle. I find it easiest to spread it on the top and the sides of the cake using an offset spatula, though a regular spatula or butter knife can work too.

    This frosting freezes nicely and holds its form well. Its fun for a birthday at home or one with family and friends.

    This ice cream cake recipe starts with a 9×5 loaf pan thats been lined with a piece of plastic wrap thats long enough to hang over the edges. Dont skip this step, because this is what will allow you to easily lift the entire cake out of the pan once its frozen solid.

    Let your ice cream set out until its nice and soft. Then spread a layer thats about 1/2-inch thick evenly across the bottom of the pan, making sure to push and smush it into all of the corners.

    Next, line up 5 ice cream sandwiches on top of the ice cream layer. They will be a bit of a tight fit, but just keep pressing down firmly and theyll conform to the pan.

    On top of the ice cream sandwiches, I spread about half a jar of hot fudge topping, and topped that off with a layer of crushed Oreo cookies. Make sure to reserve about 1/4 cup of the crushed cookies to sprinkle on top later!

    P.S. If you have the time and inclination, I cant recommend this 5-minute, 5-ingredient hot fudge sauce recipe enough. One batch will provide more than enough for this ice cream sandwich cake, along with leftovers for later sundaes.

    Finally, I added another layer of the chocolate ice cream and folded the plastic wrap over the top. Into the freezer it went for about four hours to freeze solid throughout.
