What the brewers say

A serious imperial stout aged on cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, and fresh habanero peppers.

What our panel thought

Aroma: Rich chocolate sweetness with no apparent chile note up front. As it warms, slight cinnamon with a light honey and chocolate note. Good stout aroma. Roast malt, a hint of ashy smoke that builds over time.

Flavor: Rich chocolate flavor up front with a chile flavor in the middle followed by a long chile spice that starts to grow. It never gets very hot, but theres no missing it. As it warms, a little bit of a honey sweetness tames the heat, and the heat cuts the sweetness. Roast flavors hang out in the background relative to the forward chocolate notes. Coffee and the chocolate with some nice caramel malt underpinning, plus a very light smoke note as well.

Overall: From the aroma I would not have expected a chile beer but with the flavor, the chile spice grows and grows. Its a sneaky heat and very well done! Very balanced expression of pepper and beer.

Robinsons Old Tom With Chocolate

A malty character from Old Toms base beer recipe, vanilla and cocoa come together to produce Old Tom with Chocolate, a beer reminiscent of an extra chocolatey glass of chocolate milk. This brew is also a standout chocolate beer because it is a blend of chocolate and strong ale instead of porter or stout like most. Old Tom’s is definitely worth tracking down and spending some time with if you’re in the mood for a different type of chocolatey beer.

Westbrook Mexican Cake Beer

There are some beers that work best before a meal and others that pair nicely with your main course, and then there are beers like Mexican Cake , that fit best alongside whatever you might be having for dessert or as the dessert itself. Up and coming Westbrook Brewing out of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, celebrated their first anniversary way back in 2011, and for the first time brewed this delectable imperial stout that is aged on cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks and fresh habanero peppers. It was a big hit, big enough that they’ve brought it back now due to popular demand. So seek out a bottle or two, and skip dessert in favor of some of this after-dinner brew.

Young’s Double Chocolate Stout

Based out of England, Young’s Brewery produces a Double Chocolate Stout that perfectly combines a roasted malt with cocoa in the style of a sweet stout by using a proprietary blend of sugars instead of lactose. This results in a richer, sweeter beer with sharp chocolate and vanilla accents.
