Fort Worths Craftwork Coffee Shop To Become Trinity Coffee House

Frisco’s ‘Cookie Society’ On Oprah’s List Of Favorite Things

A new project from the minds behind Fort Worth wine bar 38 & Vine opens this week in Cowtowns Foundry District. Trinity Coffee House will be taking over the space formerly occupied by Craftwork Coffee Company at 2700 Weisenberger Street, which is closing up shop due to the economic strain caused by the pandemic. The new cafes name is a reflection of the three elements its owners want to cultivate: coffee, collaboration, and coworking. Fans of Craftwork need not worry Trinity will continue to serve beans roasted by Craftwork Coffee Company.

The Cookie Society A Frisco

The Cookie Society started with a dare.

On a 2018 trip to New York, founders Jeff and Marissa Allen visited Levain Bakery, famous for their six-inch cookies. I thought there was no way were worth waiting 30 minutes in line, Jeff recalls. But they were unbelievable.

Three months later, after testing and retesting, Marissa gave Jeff what he describes as the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

Today, The Cookie Society is a Frisco-based bakery and delivery service. They rotate more than 70 individual and seasonal flavors, ranging from that first, perfect chocolate chip cookie, to their famous Banana Pudding cookie, and much, much more. This year, their Holiday Dozen Gift Crate is featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, as one of Oprahs Favorite Things and best Gifts for Foodies.

I always baked growing up, she says. Her grandmother was a baker with a home bakery in Louisiana, and Marissa says that she learned her love of the craft from her. Though she enjoyed her food blog full of savory recipes, she returned to cookies over and over again.

Then along came Jeff and his New York City challenge.

As Jeff tells it, they met in the University of Illinoiss training room he, of course, played football and she played soccer. Sports played a huge part in the structure of our lives, work ethic, teamwork, he says.

She knew the chocolate chunk cookie was right when the taste was complex and developed. I could taste salt, and rich chocolate, I could taste molasses.

Lee Lees Rugelach In Harlem New York City

For a rich, flaky pastry that is steeped in cross-cultural legend, Lee Lees Rugelach has been the go-to spot for decades.

The legend originated back in the 1960s, when Alvin Lee Smalls arrived in New York City from his home in South Carolina. He is said to have discovered a recipe for the traditional Jewish treat, rugelach, in a newspaper, and soon perfected his own version leading to the beginning of a cross-cultural legend in the Village of Harlem, according to Lee Lees website.

Oprah chose Lee Lees rugelach as one of her favorite things in 2018, citing the irresistible combination of traditional Jewish rugelach made from scratch by a black baker in Harlem.

Lee Lees is located about a 10-minute drive from Manhattan and a half-hour drive from New York Citys JFK International Airport.

I recently pinned a pin on called Oprahs Favorite Brownies which looked fudgy, moist and delicious. I wanted to know what made these Oprahs favorite brownies? I mean lets face it there are hundreds if not thousands of brownie recipes, some are cake like, some are fudgy, some are plain, some have frosting, just what made these Baked Bakery brownies so special.

I have to tell you that I have made a lot of brownies in my lifetime, some with cocoa, some with melted chocolate, some with dark chocolate and light chocolate, I have made white chocolate brownies, cake brownies, fudgy brownies and more and if these are Oprahs favorite brownies, I can absolutely see why! There are now mine as well.

These brownies are fabulous! They are rich, moist, fudgy and a cross between a brownie and a piece of fudge with a crunchy top. In a word, perfection!

The recipe could not be easier, you melt the chocolate, butter and espresso, add the sugars, mix in the eggs and then fold in the flour mixture. Super simple.

A Few Things To Note About This Recipe

The Oprah Winfrey Show: The Best Cake in America
  • The original recipe I was working off of calls for 1 tsp instant espresso powder. I almost always skip this in any recipe that calls for it , and they turn out just fine. But if you have some on hand and want to stick to the original recipe, be sure to add that in.
  • Wondering how to keep your brownies rich, chewy, fudgy, and not at all cake-like? The trick is keeping all the fluff out of the batter. For starters, dont use any leaveners like baking soda or baking powder. And dont use an electric mixer or even whisk too vigorously by hand both of these will create air bubbles within the batter that will poof up during baking creating a cake-like result.
  • All ovens are different and so baking times are going to vary greatly across the board. This recipe calls for 30 minutes in the oven. But just for the record: I pulled mine out at 28 minutes, and I think even one more minute in there would have been just a little too long and made them less fudgy in the middle. I suggest checking for doneness starting at 25 minutes the first time you bake these.
  • The only change I might make to these brownies would be to add chocolate chips. They already have melted chocolate in the batter, but I’m a texture freak and love chunks of chocolate in my brownies. But even without the chunks, these were seriously the best brownies to ever come out of my kitchen!
