No Time To Cook Your Own Mardi Gras Treat Order One Up From One Of These Bakeries Beloved Of Nola Locals

Mardi Gras is February 13that’s todayand nothing puts the fat in Tuesday quite like a sugary slice of King Cake. Made of cinnamon-scented sweet brioche dough, the cakes are traditionally braided, sometimes filled , and adorned in sugar stripes of green, gold, and purple that represent faith, power, and justice. The treat is a New Orleans tradition beloved as much for its buttery crumb, as for the element of chance in every bite: If you find a trinket in your slice, you’re the host of next year’s king cake party.

But perhaps you’re so busy decorating your mask and polishing your Hurricane glasses, you don’t have time to bake a King Cake yourself? Never fear: These bakeries make the favorite cakes of NOLA localsand they all deliver nationwide . Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Paul’s Pastry: Located not in Louisiana but just across the border in Picayune, Mississippi, Paul’s ships unadorned King Cakes with frosting and colored sugar on the side so you can decorate to taste.

Haydel’s and Gambino’s: The rivalry between these two bakeries could have inspired the Montagues and Capulets. Haydel’s loyalists love the praline pecan version , while Gambino’s fans recommend the classic plain .

What Does The Baby Inside The King Cake Mean

Hidden in its interior, or under a slice, is a small plastic baby. Whoever finds it must either bring the next cake or throw a party, thus sparking an unending round of food and fun. Whether at the workplace, school or home – king cake is a gift that keeps on giving throughout the Mardi Gras season.

Many bakeries offer King Cake packages, bundling the pastry with all manner of bric-a-brac for your Mardi Gras-themed gathering. Whats A Mardi Gras Party Without A King Cake

According to the Christian faith, Jesus first showed himself to the three wise men and to the world on January 6th, also known as Twelfth Night or the Epiphany. The word “Epiphany is from the Greek word “to show. This is the day Mardi Gras season hence king cake season begins.

Each king cake has a tiny baby inside . In the past, you might have found an item such as a coin, bean, pecan or pea in a king cake. The lucky person who receives the slice of cake with the baby has the next king cake party .

The king cake tradition is believed to have been brought over from France in the 1870s. Originally, king cakes were a simple ring of dough with a small amount of decoration. After the rich dough is braided and baked, the top of the cake is covered with delicious sugar toppings in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold . In more recent years, many bakeries have been creative, topping their cakes with different flavors of cream cheese and fruit fillings and offering them in various shapes. King cakes are often served at New Orleans weddings as the groom’s cake.
