Best Flavor For Gender Reveal Cakes
You can choose any flavor you want for your gender reveal cake, with a few exceptions. You dont want to choose chocolate or another dark-colored cake unless you opt for a Surprise on the Inside cake reveal because the food coloring wont show through the dark color of the cake. Another option if you have your heart set on chocolate, is to make the frosting between the layers pink or blue.
If youre using food coloring to reveal the babys gender, the best flavor you can choose would be vanilla because its white. However, yellow cake would also work well. And both options can be completely colored or marbled.
How To Make Gender Reveal Cupcakes
FIRST STEP: Start by preheating the oven to 350°F.
SECOND STEP: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
THIRD STEP: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy. Pour in the eggs and mix well.
FOURTH STEP: Mix in dry ingredients in 2 batches, alternating with milk.
FIFTH STEP: Fold in the pretty blue and pink sprinkles. Mix all ingredients until well combined.
SIXTH STEP: Place cupcake liners in the 12-cup cupcake pan.
SEVENTH STEP: Bake for 25 minutes. Check with a toothpick to see if the cake part is baked through. When the cupcakes come out of the oven, let them cool completely.
To make the icing:
EIGHTH STEP: Beat the butter, salt, and powdered sugar on low until its all combined. Add vanilla extract and beat on medium-high speed until creamy. About 3 minutes. Beat in milk on medium-high speed for 1 minute, or until fluffy.
NINTH STEP: Place ½ cup of the plain icing in a small bowl. Stir in a small amount of blue or pink gel food coloring until the icing is the desired color.
TENTH STEP: Keep your cupcakes in the pan and cut a small hole on the top of the cupcake, right in the center. This will be filled with blue or pink icing. I used a Wilton 1A icing tip to punch a hole.
ELEVENTH STEP: Fill the hole with the icing and place the portion of the cutout cupcake back over the top.
TWELFTH STEP: Pipe plain icing on top and decorate with sprinkles before serving.

How Long Does The Cake Last For And Can You Freeze It
The cake will keep in an airtight container for 3 days in a cool place. You can freeze the sponges either alone, or decorated . Once the sponges are fully cool, wrap them well with cling film or put them in an airtight container with some baking paper between them. You can freeze the buttercream on its own in a tub, or you can decorate the cake and freeze it fully assembled.
To do this and avoid damage to the decoration, freeze it either in an airtight container or let it freeze solid on a cake board or plate, then wrap in cling film. Remove the cling film when you take it out to defrost it, if you dont it could damage the decoration as it defrosts and softens. You can also freeze slices of the cake, again well wrapped in cling film or in airtight containers.
And… it’s a boy! I of course knew the gender as I made the cake, but my partner did not know. He cut the cake and it was such an emotional moment when everyone found out, once we’d all taken photos and some us had wiped our eyes, we tucked in to the cake! It was really yummy and the jam helped to cut through the sweetness, plus it gave an extra blue effect to the filling.
