Does Pittsburgh Really Make The Best Cake In America

PittGirl puts the Prantls burnt almond torte to ultimate test: a 9-month-old baby.

“Whos got the best cake in the country? Pittsburgh does!Best cake in all of America! Woo!

This was the virtual chest-bumping reaction in April, when Huffington Post writer Julie R. Thomson declared Prantls Bakerys burnt-almond torte to be the Greatest Cake America Has Ever Made.

If theres one thing we Burghers love, its the chance to cheer about our city and show the rest of the world that were not Pittsburgh? Really? Were Pittsburgh. Really! We like to brag about our restaurants, our resiliency and our skyline .

I am one of Prantls most-rabid cheerleaders. But when the Huffington Post piece came out, I didnt run down Grant Street whooping while Instagramming ecstatic selfies of me with Prantls icing on my face and almond slices stuck to my eyebrows. Because I realized that the news outlet didnt hold a contest or blind taste test. It didnt use any science at all. It just published a post from one person among Earths billions of people and let her proclaim Prantls burnt-almond torte as the Greatest Cake America Has Ever Made.

Definitive by what standard science? No, by the standard of the dude who spent five hours of his life sifting through pictures of dogs in couches and decided the panic-eyed Chihuahua fully wedged in a sleeper sofa beat the pug butt-stuck between the leather cushions. This is todays Internet, ladies and gentlemen.

Huff Post Names Prantl’s Bakery Burnt Almond Torte Best Cake In America’

PITTSBURGH The Huffington Post has officially declared Prantls Bakery burnt almond torte the best cake in America.

In an article published Monday, the writer says . It is just a damn good cake — and taking a bite out of one is like reaching into the sky and stuffing a cloud into your mouth.

“To say that the burnt almond torte is light and airy doesn’t even begin to describe the texture of this cake. It is beyond that. This cake is so airy it tastes like the idea of a cake, one that can only be tasted in the best of dreams.

Only it does exist in real life — in Pittsburgh, PA, to be exact– and it is frosted with the lightest of buttercreams and then dressed in candied toasted almonds.”

A few weeks ago I was perusing Facebook and came across a post that caught my eye because it mentioned Pittsburgh and hailed Thank You, Pittsburgh, For the Greatest Cake America Has Ever Eaten. As I have family in Pittsburgh, I shared the link from the Huffington Post with my mother-in-law and asked if she was familiar with Prantls bakery. She said yes, but felt the Party Cakehad a far better cake. Since we were going to be in the Burgh the following week to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon, I suggested we have a taste test between the two to see who in fact could claim the bragging rights of Best Cake.

Challenge accepted!

We arrived in town, excited to show our four friends the city of Pittsburgh. We were all running the half marathon and looked forward to attending the expo, taking in a Pirates game at PNC Park and having them try the infamous Primanti Bros. sandwich and unbeknownst to them, be cake taste testers.

We couldnt wait for dessert- a true blind taste test- only my mother- in- law and sister- in- law knew which was which. Both Burnt Almond Torte cakes were cut in same-sized squares and placed on matching plates.

One marked with B

We used paper plates with an A and B side and let the tasting begin!

And the numbers did not lie.

How Do I Get The Perfect Almond Outer Topping

I really think Prantls bakers fry the almonds then toss them with the sugar, there is no other way I can think of getting the even coloring that they have, other than frying the almonds.

I think this is a step most home cooks or home bakers would not do, thats why I stuck to the oven toasting. But if you want to, you can try costing and frying them.
