Red Velvet Viennetta Ice Cream Cake

If you dont remember anything from back in the day, heres a refresher. Viennetta was an ice cream cake sold in boxes and found in freezer cases everywhere. It just seemed more sophisticated than other frozen desserts, probably due to its good looks. The cake had a wavy base of frozen vanilla cream, interspersed with crispy chocolate layers and finished with decorative piping on the top and sides.

Maybe it was the vaguely foreign-sounding name that gave Viennetta cachet. It did debut in the United Kingdom in the early 80s and has remained popular there and throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand. It was only in the US that Viennetta disappeared in the 90s.

Viennetta Ice Cream Cake Market

Viennetta ice cream was initially introduced as a sweet multi-portion dessert.

The first success was achieved after the cake was introduced in KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants. This move caused Unilever conglomerate, the owner of Walls, to produce a variety of flavours and sizes.

The first launch of Viennetta to the markets in the US and Canada was in the 1980s through the Breyers ice cream.

Unilever stopped selling the product in the mid 1990s, but now came back to the United States in early 2021 through the Good Humor brand.

Viennetta ice cream cake is no longer sold in Canada.

Viennetta ice cream keeps producing in Australia and New Zealand through Streets, a branch of Unilever.

This cream is available in all Italian supermarkets. It is also available in Israel, Germany, Greece, and Austria under another name Fantasia.

Viennetta multi portion dessert appears in Japan under the Morinaga & Company brand. It appears in Finn supermarkets by Ingman and keeps selling in Indonesia from the 1990s to the 2000s and came back in April 2020, after an appeal signed by nearly 75.000 citizens wanted Viennettas return to Indonesia.

In the Thailand market, the cake was available early in the 1990s and returned in the late 2020. Viennetta was formerly called Comtessa in Spain owing to a legal issue, but got the name again Viennetta in the 1990s.

How To Make Homemade Vienetta Step By Step Instructions

  • Line a loaf pan with waxed paper. This will help you get your loaf out.
  • Spread 1/3 of your ice cream into the bottom of the loaf pan.
  • Run the pick along it to form deep grooves. These will fill in with our yummy magic shell.

You can make homemade magic shell if you wantbut you can also buy it for about a dollar. No sense in making extra work for yourself

  • Pour a layer of magic shell over and allow to harden a minute.
  • Add another 1/3 of your ice cream and dig grooves into it with your pick again.
  • Pour magic shell over that as well. Im using butterscotch this time.
  • Now add the rest of our ice cream and dig grooves into it as well.
  • Top this final layer with a drizzle of chocolate magic shell and immediately cover with aluminum foil and place in the freezer until firm.
  • When ready to serve, allow to sit out for about five minutes and then remove from the pan using the waxed paper. Remove the waxed paper and place on a platter to slice and serve.

How To Cut An Ice Cream Cake

Once youve built a gorgeous ice cream cake, learn how to slice it into beautifully, crisp pieces. Heres a biggie tip: if youre serving your cake to guests, slice the cake ahead of time, leave it on the plate, and put it back into the freezer.

  • Remove it from the freezer 10 minutes before serving. You want the ice cream cake to soften every so slightly to make your job easier but not melt!

  • Dip the blade of a large metal chefs knife in a tall glass of warm water. You know how people dip ice cream scoops in warm water to help them glide through a pint of ice cream? Dipping a chefs knife will help it slice through your layer cake neatly. Just make sure to dry off the blade completely with paper towels.

  • Place the tip of the knife into the center of the cake first. Then press the back of the blade downwards to make an even slice.

  • Dip the blade in water and dry it. After every cut youll want to re-dip the blade in water and dry it off. Otherwise, you risk messy results.

Viennetta Cakes Are Coming Back For The First Time In 30 Years

Viennetta Cakes are coming back to freezer sections everywhere for the first time in 30 years, and all we have to say is what took ’em so long?

Good Humor will revive the iconic dessert of the ’90s, according to a press release from parent company Unilever. Even better news? They’re available at retailers nationwide now.

In case you need your memory refreshed, the press release describes vanilla Viennetta as a combination of “wavy frozen vanilla base between crispy, decadent chocolate layers in a unique cake shape that is perfectly portioned for an entire family to share.”

Have you ever heard your uncle or grandmother say, “What in Sam Hill ?” It’s said in the same tone as “What in tarnation” or “What the H-E-double hockey sticks.” It’s a euphemism for “hell” or the devil.

So where did the phrase originate? Was there a real Sam Hill?

According to Patricia T. O’Conner and Stewart Kellerman on Grammarphobia.com, the phrase was first seen in print in the early 19th century. The Oxford English Dictionary quotes the Aug. 1, 1839, Havana, New York, Republican newspaper: “What in sam hill is that feller ballin’ about?”

O’Conner and Kellerman speculate: “The fact that the ‘s’ and ‘h’ of ‘sam hill’ are lower-case in the newspaper suggests that the expression didn’t originally refer to a real person.”

Other sources, however, claim the phrase could possibly have come from a person or a character. Here are a few examples:

How To Make An Ice Cream Cake

First lets talk about the cake pan. I used an 8 by 3 inch cake pan, because I prefer a taller cake. You could definitely use a 9 inch pan though, and a springform pan would certainly be convenient. All according to what youre going for.

Once youve got your pan, youll want to line the inside of it with clear wrap. Now its time to make your cake!

  • Chocolate Ice Cream: Add your chocolate ice cream and spread it evenly into the pan. Pop the pan and ice cream into the freezer for about 30 minutes so it firms up just a bit.
  • Chocolate fudge layer: Youre actually going to make chocolate ganache itll just be a little thinner than normal and have some corn syrup in it. The corn syrup is really essential here. It helps it stay softer even when frozen, giving it that fudgy consistency. Its not too firm and not too soft and drippy. The fudge layer is added on top of the ice cream and then frozen for another 10 minutes or so.
  • Vanilla ice cream: Add the vanilla ice cream on top and freeze the cake until its firm. When its done, frost it with my homemade whipped cream. It uses some powdered sugar to keep it from wilting. It stays stable for days and days making it ideal for an ice cream cake. Decorate the ice cream cake as you like for your occasion and youre ready to go!

Viennetta Ice Cream Is Returning To The Us For The First Time Since The ’90s

Still a dessert staple in the UK, the fancy-looking ice cream didn’t have staying power on this side of the pond three decades ago.

Launched as a Christmas specialty by the British brand Wall’s in 1982, the Viennetta ice cream cake is still a staple dessert in the United Kingdom to this day. However, though its “waves of soft ice cream and cracking chocolate flavor layers” grabbed Americans’ attention upon its release , it didn’t have the same staying power on this side of the pond.

Originally brought to the U.S. under the Breyers brand, Viennetta was discontinued here back in the 1990s, despite continuing its run elsewhere in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. But now, thanks in part to our never-ending obsession with ’90s nostalgia, Viennetta is getting another shot at having Spice Girls like success instead being America’s dessert equivalent to Take That.

As part of a list of “25 New Frozen Treats for 2021,” Wall’s parent company Unilever slipped in an announcement this week that the frozen treat will be re-introduced to the U.S., though this timeprobably more fittinglyunder the Good Humor brand.

“Fans have clamored for Viennetta’s return for almost 30 years, and in 2021, Good Humor grants their wish,” Unilever explained, before boasting that the ice cream cake “can make any day a celebration and is great for all special occasions: birthdays, holidays, BBQs, parties, or an after-dinner treat!”

They’re Versatile As All Get Out

Is there anywhere locally that sells viennetta ice cream ...

No matter what time of day it is, if you’ve got Vienna sausages on hand, the limit to what you can cook up in the kitchen does. not. exist.

Wake up hungry? You could make some Vienna sausage burritos or even an egg scramble with them. A Vienna scramble, as people call it . Is it lunch time already? A Vienna sausage sandwich should do it, and don’t get us started on all the ways — with pasta, in a stew, as a stir fry — you can fix ’em into a dinner.

You could probably even use those adaptable little weenies in this sausage cake recipe, which means dessert is covered too.

To be clear, we’re not saying you should eat this much Vienna sausage in a day. In fact, We’re advising you not to because, like all good things, they’re not exactly healthy. We’re just pointing out that if you wanted to, you could.
