Akron-Canton Airport passenger volume in 2021 totaled 414,783, up 42.2% from 2020, according to the airport.
So far this year, passenger volume at Akron-Canton Airport is at a higher pace than a year ago. The airport reports January passenger volume was 33,795, up 109.5% from January 2021. February passenger volume totaled 37,156, up 130.1% from a year ago, while in March, passenger volume was 59,182, up 96.6% from March 2021 levels.
Spirit Airlines also is in merger discussions with two other airlines.
JetBlue Airways has said it wants to buy Spirit. Meanwhile Spirit’s board of directors is in talks to sell the company to the parent of Frontier Airlines, Frontier Group Holdings.
Spirit management has said it will continue discussions with JetBlue while saying they are bound by the terms of the merger agreement with Frontier.
Spirit Airlines Inc., which had $3.2 billion in revenue for all of 2021, will report its 2022 first quarter results on May 4.

Passenger Growth And Decline
During the mid-2000s, the airport was one of the fastest-growing airports in the Midwest, attracting passengers from the Akron/Canton area and Cleveland metropolitan area. The airport’s passenger count doubled between 2000 and 2006, with several new routes added by AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines. The airport experienced its busiest year in 2012, with 1.83 million passengers flying in or out.
Since 2012, passenger traffic has decreased. Following the acquisition of AirTran Airways, then the airport’s largest carrier, by Southwest Airlines in 2011, Southwest reduced AirTran’s presence at the airport. Several other low-cost carriers, including JetBlue, Frontier Airlines, and Spirit Airlines, established new routes from nearby Cleveland Hopkins, lowering average airfares at that airport and reducing demand for Cleveland-based travelers to fly out of further-away Akron. In 2017 Southwest dropped Akron and consolidated operations at Cleveland Hopkins, as did Allegiant Air the same year.
By 2017, the airport’s passenger traffic sank to its lowest level since 2004. As of May 2018, the airport had the 2nd fastest declining passenger count of any US airport.
Delta Air Lines closed its operation at the airport in 2020.

Spirit Airlines Temporarily Pulling Out Of Akron

GREEN, Ohio Spirit Airlines is temporarily pulling out of the Akron-Canton Airport while adjusting flights at Cleveland Hopkins, part of a nationwide reduction in service in response to a pilot shortage and other operational issues.
The cuts at Akron-Canton are scheduled from June 5 through Nov. 1 and will affect nonstop service from Akron-Canton to Orlando and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Meanwhile, in Cleveland, Spirit is temporarily eliminating nonstop flights to Cancun and New Orleans in early June, while resuming daily service to Dallas Fort-Worth and adding a second daily flight to Myrtle Beach, according to Spirit spokesman Erik Hofmeyer.
Spirit is joining several other airlines in proactively adjusting our summer schedule to provide additional flexibility during the busy travel season and ensure we provide the travel experience our guests have come to expect from us, Hofmeyer said in a statement.
Numerous carriers in recent weeks have announced spring and summer flight reductions in response to staffing shortages and other challenges. The reductions come as carriers have struggled to keep up with increasing demand from travelers, who are returning to the skies faster than predicted following the easing of coronavirus-related restrictions.
