Need To Find A Grocery Store With The Best Chocolate Cake
Its my sons birthday this week. I know all bakeries are closed. Im trying to find a grocery store bakery that makes a good chocolate cake? He lives near The Grove / Cedars Sanai. Any suggestions ?
In general, I like the bakery items at Whole Foods the best of all of the grocery store chains. However, Ive never had chocolate cake from WF.
Over the years, Ive found Ralphs bakery to be a consistent good value.
There is a Vons in that area at Fairfax and Pico. They make nice baked goods. Just got a rolled tiramisu cake yesterday from them on their $5 Friday deal. Its delicious.
Does your son have a large family? A sheetcake is a lot for my large-ish family.
Also, grocery stores that usually deliver are overwhelmed- you might not be able to get it delivered .
Restaurants are really hurting right now. Perhaps order dinner and a slice or more of cake from a restaurant that offers delivery- Grubhub, Ubereats, Postmates, ChowNow or Doordash.

Whole Foods prides itself on excellent customer service. Cakes are no exception.
As I mentioned, they have bakers and cake decorators on staff and can make just about anything. Want a red velvet cake ? They got you covered!
A vegan chocolate cake? No problem! Maybe a stevia-sweetened vanilla cake? Also no problem.
To order your cake, just call your store to order or visit the store. Many stores offer online ordering as well.
They also offer catering. If you dont want just one cake, but maybe you want a tray of sweet things, cheese, or other party platters, theyll bring it to you!

If you are planning a kids birthday party, Walmart is definitely the one-stop-shop.
You can purchase your presents, party supplies, decorations, and yes, even your cake at Walmart.
Talk about convenient!
But how good are their cakes? Good is really subjective, but for clarity, Im assuming we can agree that moist cakes are better than dry cakes. Lets also assume that frosting that hurts your teeth is too sweet.
Walmart does not have a terribly wide selection of cake flavors. The following are available at most stores:
- White cake
Yellow cake is available at select stores.

I found several reviews of Walmart cakes that have similar themes. Reviewers say they do not have a wide selection of cakes, and they sometimes dont look like they are supposed to.
Generally speaking, I find the frosting is too sweet, but the cake itself is moist and tasty. As an added bonus, Walmarts cakes are very affordable. Just like pretty much everything else at Walmart.
So if you arent looking for anything fancy, and just want inexpensive cake, Walmart is probably a good option.
If this is your childs first birthday, theyll even give you a free smash cake with a cake purchase of at least $15.
A smash cake is a cake specifically for the birthday boy or girl to smash and play in without getting their kid germs all over the big cake.
Its actually pretty fun to watch your new 1-year-old dig into their very own cake!
Does Walmart Bake Their Own Cakes
Sadly, no.
Walmarts sheet cakes come in frozen from Pillsbury. Their round cakes come from Best Brands based in Minnesota.
So if you like Pillsbury products, including their boxed cake mix, youll probably like Walmarts cakes.
Theyll also do their best to customize it how you want it, and theyll write pretty much anything on it, as long as its not offensive.
But dont get too fancy. Walmart is all about cheap products and low labor costs. Youre not likely going to find a talented cake decorator on staff.
Fun fact a Costco sheet cake fits perfectly into an IKEA shopping bag. Its sacred geometry.

Who Makes The Best Grocery Store Sheet Cake
Indeed, a slice of baked batter topped with frosting is a requisite piece of any celebration, from a birthday bash to an office occasion.
Grocers are keen to be part of Americas parties. Many are investing in their in-store bakeries, both as a way to appear fresh in the eyes of consumers and as a means to keep you in their aisles. Buying a cake from a baker instead of a cooler case adds value to the shopping experience.
And bakeries add to grocers bottom line. Americans spent $13.5 billion on in-store bakery products in 2015, according to Progressive Grocers 2016 Retail Bakery Review.

Richest Cake: Bakers Corner From Aldi

For an ultra-rich, buttery cake, our Test Kitchen recommends Bakers Corner yellow cake mix. This Aldi-exclusive brand produced an exceptionally moist cake with the richest flavor of the eight brands tested. The only drawback is that moisture meant that the cake didnt rise as much as others, which isnt a problem unless youre banking on nice fat layers for an elaborate layer cake.

Are Target Cakes Good
Target does a lot of things really well.
They seem to have this spell on people that somehow encourages people to spend more money than they intended.
Not all Targets sell cakes, but the ones that do are generally well-received. Target has a lot of options when it comes to flavor combinations. they can make customized cakes to fit in with your celebration theme, too.
Admittedly, when my 2 older daughters were younger, they loved walking by the Target bakery case and looking at all the cakes.
But this was all based on appearance. Target uses a lot of what I could call props to enhance the appearance of their cakes. They also do a lot of character licensing. By that I mean they pay companies like Disney to be able to use an official picture of Elsa on a cake, etc.
But they do also have more normal cakes too.
Its not right for me since they have the same ingredient issues that Costco & Walmart. But like with those cakes, you are likely to find the texture and flavor good. And if youre planning a themed kids birthday party, I would opt for Target over the others too.
Just make sure your Target has a bakery as not all Target stores do.

Here are the four metrics we used to determine each mix’s final grade.
Nutrition: To level the playing field, we calculated the nutrition per actual cupcake yield, and we included the preparation ingredients following box instructions.
Ingredients: This is less about having “good-for-you” ingredients in your cake mix and more about not having “bad-for-you” ingredients in your cake mix. We split this into two categories”ingredients” and “preparation ingredients”so you could see what the mix contains and then how the brand instructs you to make it.
Appearance & Consistency: A category in which we can discuss any glaring issues with the cake, mouthfeel, and texture.
Taste: Yes, a cupcake has to taste great to make up for the indulgence aspect however, because you typically eat the cupcake someone baked for you regardless of taste , this category wasn’t the end-all, be-all when it came time to the final judgement.
