I like to make a yogurt peanut butter icing, but as youll see in the photos I also sometimes top these with just bananas. You could also make an icing using just a spread of peanut butter.

I like the idea of piping it on so the yogurt helps with that. Pumpkin would also work as a topping! Dogs love pumpkin and its very good for their digestion.

Easy Dog Birthday Cake @ Not Quite Nigella

What if I dont have whole wheat flour?

First, always consult with YOUR veterinarian about what is best for YOUR dog. I personally prefer using whole wheat flour or oat flour for these treats. Ive made them with both and my dog had zero complaints either way. Dont have whole wheat flour or oat flour? You can substitute white wheat flour or all-purpose. Just be sure to feed them to your pup in moderation!

Storage

Keep these in an air tight container or zipped bag for easy storage or make many batches at once and store them in the freezer! No need to thaw before rewarding your dog with a frozen homemade pumpkin dog treat they last longer served that way.

Need a fun gift idea for the dog lovers in your life? Make a batch of these, put them in a jar wrapped with a colorful ribbon and a note and you have a unique and thoughtful token of appreciation for human and doggy friend alike!

I like to make every birthday for Stanley super special. Dog lovers know, you only get so many birthdays with these special friends and every single one of them is equal to 7 human birthdays.

I basically came up with this dog cake by putting together foods I knew he could eat. Oats, peanut butter, bananas and yogurt are all healthy for dogs unless your dog has a special sensitivity.

I know he has no idea its his birthday and thats okay with me, because I do. We spend the entire weekend celebrating. He got a new collar from the Ellen line at PetSmart. Hes looking super cute in his new neck ware.

We make it a point to stay around the house playing fetch and serving up a few extra treats. One of those treats is the Pupcake. Youll see in the video below he gobbles it right up.

You can use the icing recipe in the notes or feel free to top with banana.

If you’re a dog owner already, then it’s likely you already know that chocolate is toxic for your canine chum. However, you may be wondering about other ingredients in a typical birthday cake recipe, such as vanilla, icing or even the flour.

Dogs can eat these ingredients, but, as they’re typically loaded in fat, sugar and wheat, it’s best to create them their very own dog cake and ensure they only receive a small piece.

Ideal ingredients for making your own dog cake include some of your pup’s favorite gooey treats such as peanut butter, apple sauce and pumpkin just make sure you always choose xylitol-free as the standard peanut butter found in your kitchen can be highly toxic to dogs.

Savvy pet owners have even developed dog birthday cakes that are perfect for pups on a raw dog food diet.

Why This Recipe Works

Hudson, believe it or not, has a sensitive tummy. Ever since he was a puppy, I have included pumpkin in my recipes for him. Pumpkin provides dogs with fiber and aids in digestive health. Its easy for dogs to digest and the flavor isnt overwhelming!

For this recipe, I also included applesauce. It has the same benefits as pumpkin, but adds a little natural sweetness. Applesauce is also a substitute for oil, which I wanted to avoid using in this recipe.

Healthy Benefits Of Honey For Dogs

Honey is known to have antimicrobial and antifungal properties according to the American Kennel Club. It also reduces inflammation and cure allergies. Do not give raw honey to puppies or dogs with compomised immune systems. It is only okay in recipes. Hudson has been very itchy since moving from Connecticut to Colorado so Im hoping honey helps his allergies!
