How To Clean Your Cake Mixer

No one likes cleaning their gadgets after using them, but it has to be done, so look for dishwasher-safe ones to take the hassle out of cleaning by hand.

Its obvious, but make sure the model you buy has dishwasher-safe parts if thats how you plan to clean them washing parts that arent meant for a dishwasher in this way can cause the plastic to split.

And even then you should check the recommended washing temperature of dishwasher-safe parts they can be damaged by putting them in a washing cycle that’s too hot.

For most bowls and attachments though, a simple scrub using a sponge plus warm and soapy water should be enough.

Kitchenaid Classic Plus Ksm75wh

Bowl Size:Mixing Action:

The younger sibling of the Artisan, the KitchenAid Classic Plus is a mid-sized, tilt-head machine endowed with a sturdy motor. Thanks to the narrow bowl/attachment gap, it performs well with thick cookie dough, and it handles the mixing and kneading of pizza dough with relative ease. When you’re done with your tasks, the head, neck, and base are relatively easy to wipe down.

That’s all good, but when mixing cookie dough, the paddle came loose while struggling to scrape a large piece of dough off the side of the bowl something we didn’t experience with any other mixer. Also, the cake sponges mixed by this machine fell enough to suggest subpar whipping action. Lastly, the Classic had some trouble incorporating frosting ingredients from the bottom of the bowl, necessitating we scrape the bowl a few times to ensure a thorough mix. Despite these limitations, this machine is more than worth the money its all-around quality performance exceeded much of the competition.

WIRED Recommends: The Kitchenaid Artisan is an eye-catching mixer with luxurious features

Bowl size: 4.8L | Bowl material: Stainless steel | Power: 300W | Dimensions: 36 x 24 x 37cm

Designed in 1937, the KitchenAid stand mixer is an iconic design. Not least for its choice of 15 head-turning colours which includes Empire Red but also for its pleasing aesthetic and classic features.

There are four attachments in the box of the KitchenAid Artisan 4.8L , including a dough hook, flat beater, flex edge beater and wire whisk. We were particularly intrigued to see how well the flex edge beater works compared to standard beaters weve tested which almost always need stopping to remove ingredients sticking to the side of the bowl. When we used it to combine the caster sugar and butter, we were impressed at how well the flex edge beater did scraping the ingredients off the sides we only needed to give it a little mix at the end to ensure every last bit had been combined.

Pros: Luxury feel ergonomic body useful extras attachments easy to fit and secure Cons: At 10.98kg, its a heavy design

Are Kitchenaid Stand Mixer Attachments And Bowls Interchangeable

220v 3.5l stand mixer mixing machine electric cake beater maker dough ...

Most KitchenAid attachments that connect at the Power Hub at the top front of the mixer can be used on any KitchenAid model, including the Artisan Mini mixer. For attachments that require a little more power to operate efficiently, consider how much youre going to use the attachment and how much power the mixer actually puts out. The Artisan mixers have less power than the Professional models, so be gentle when using the attachments, making sure not to overwork them.

Bowls and attachments like paddles, whisks, and dough hooks are generally specific to the style of KitchenAid mixer you have. Mixers with bowls that attach at the base of the machine will not work on the bowl-lift style mixers, and vice-versa. The mixing attachments that come with the machines are also scaled based on the size and style bowl the machine has, and are not easily swapped out between different models.

The one exception to these rules is the KitchenAid Ice Cream Bowl attachment, which can be used on all mixer models except the Artisan Mini 3.5-quart Mixer.

How To Choose A Stand Mixer

There are two common types of stand mixers: tilt-head and bowl-lift stand mixers. A tilt-head stand mixer has a hinged top so you can swing the head up to place a bowl in the base or add ingredients. A bowl-lift mixer has a fixed head and a lever that lets you raise or lower the bowl.

With a tilt-head mixer, youll have more space to swap out accessories or scrape down the sides of the bowl while the mixer is off. But if youll be fine-tuning your recipes or need to add ingredients while a mixer is running, you may find a bowl-lift mixer to be a better option because there is more space between the bowl and the bottom of the mixer head. A bowl-lift mixer may also provide more stability when a mixer is churning through heavier dough, whereas a tilt-head mixer may vibrate or move up and down slightly as the motor has to work harder.

A pair of heavy-duty mixers that we tested the Bosch Universal and Ankarsrum Original have a motor in the base and a bowl that slides on top this design leaves the top open for adding ingredients.

Youll also want to think about whether your mixer will stay on the counter or be tucked away in a pantry or cabinet. The stand mixers we tested ranged in height from 10.3 inches to 19 inches tall. While they all fit underneath a standard set of cabinets, the weight proved to be a more significant factor.

Planetary Vs Stationary Mixing

Stand mixers use one of two mixing styles: planetary or stationary.

Planetary stand mixers have a single beater that spins as it rotates through the bowl. This provides the most consistent mixing because more contact occurs between beater and mixture.

Stationary stand mixers feature two stationary beaters that spin as the bowl rotates. While these models suffice for thinner batters and lighter mixing jobs, the mix isnt as consistent as what youd get from a planetary mixer.

Many budget stand mixers feature stationary mixing, but you can also find affordable planetary models if you dont mind a smaller bowl.

What Kind Of Stand Mixer Attachments Are Available

Stand mixers often feature more than one outlet the main outlet being using to rotate the tool in the bowl. Additional ones are usually located at the front of the machine or on the top of the lever arm. These allow you to power attachments, turning your simple stand mixer into a multifunctional kitchen helper. Standard mixer attachments include a blender jug for making smoothies and soups, or crushing ice, and sometimes a food processor for slicing, grating and chopping.

Most manufacturers offer a range of stand mixer attachments to buy. These include rollers for making pasta and specialised ravioli makers. There are also mincers or grinders for processing meat, slicers, pre-freeze ice cream bowls, millers, spiralisers and juicers. Accessories and attachments can take up a fair amount of room in your kitchen. Look for models that can store accessories inside the bowl or come with a storage box. That way, you wont lose kit at the back of a cupboard.

Aucma 6.5-Quart Stand Mixer

This mixer scored on the lower end in performance. The tilt head released with a nifty lever but an ominous clank. Unlike the KitchenAid, the Aucma struggled to evenly mix ingredients. It was loud when whipping frosting, and we had to stop repeatedly to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Thick cookie dough had the small tilt mixer rocking slightly, although the compact mixer was able to knead bread dough together after initially struggling to pull the wet dough off the sides of the bowl.

If youre looking for a mixer to complete the look of your kitchen, the Aucma is adorable, with a glowing LED speed knob and colors fit for Hello Kittys kitchen. And if you dont want to leave it out, the tilt-head mixer is also lightweight at less than 12 pounds and has a large 6.5 quart bowl with two handles.

Smeg SMF03

The Smeg stand mixer looks like a high-performance race car with sleek lines and chrome accents. It was portable and easy to operate out of the box, but it didnt quite perform at the same level as our top mixers despite a similar price tag.

Smegs Smooth Start feature means the motor gradually accelerates to the speed you set on the dial . While this felt choppy at first and ingredients didnt combine as quickly, the mixer was effective once it got up to speed.

Hand Mixer Vs Stand Mixer Which Is Better For Baking

Are you all mixed up and wondering: hand mixer versus stand mixer does it really matter which one you use when baking? There are noticeable differences in the way these appliances function. Here we explain the differences, advantages and drawbacks to owning and using both.

Hand Mixer Small and light, a hand mixer is easy to store and portable so you can mix at the stove top, sink or counter using any of your own bowls or pots. Its usually easier to operate than fancier stand mixers and its definitely less expensive and easier to clean. On the downside, you cant walk away from it while its mixing and sometimes it takes longer to mix.

Stand Mixer Youll have more speed and power with a stand mixer which you often need for big batches of dough or baking several desserts at once. Its hands-free, allowing you to multi-task while it does its job. A stand mixer also has many attachments like a paddle for creaming and a whisk for whipping egg whites. Yet, you are definitely paying for the benefits of a stand mixer, both in price and the room needed in your kitchen to store it. Plus they can be really heavy.

So can you use a hand mixer when the recipe calls for a stand mixer? The answer is yes for many recipes it can. Most cake and cookie dough batters as well as frosting or cream can be done with either a hand mixer or stand mixer like the recipes below.

The Verdict: Stand Mixers

The Best Stand Mixer for Cookies, Cakes, Bread, and Beyond

Its tricky to pick a single winner here because, with so many price points and features to consider, its a bit like comparing apples and oranges. But the stand mixer that over-delivers most on its price point working like a dream, looking great, and providing superb value is the Swan 800W retro stand mixer. We can heartily recommend it if your budget is just around the £100 mark.

If you have a bigger budget, and want a machine to last for decades, then the mixer you choose really depends on your individual requirements. For an icon that is certain to go the distance with your bakes, wed plump for the KitchenAid mixer tilt-head 4.8l artisan with accessories.
