The process of making a crabcake at Faidleys Seafood started with a generous portion of jumbo lump crab. The crab was then tossed in Old Bay seasoning before saltine crackers were added as a binder for the wet seasoning. The crab was then formed into a ball the size of a baseball. The balls were placed in the fridge to set overnight before being fried the next morning until golden brown.

Its not difficult to find a good crab cake in Maryland, and that includes Baltimore as well. With so many crab cake spots around the city, how do you decide which are worth trying? Well, there are two options.
Option one: try them ALL. This method is good in theory but its highly likely that in your search for the perfect crab cake, youll taste a few not-so-good ones along the way. Option two: go straight to Faidleys Seafood and never look back. We much prefer this choice, and so do locals and visitors alike. Read on to see why.

Interior Of Faidleys Seafood
While historic, Lexington Market wasnt your typical farmers market. It was located in a grittier neighborhood of Baltimore. And, Faidleys Seafood was not your typical restaurant. It was less of a restaurant and more of a fish market and raw bar selling all types of fresh seafood including crab, shrimp, oysters, clams, and lobster.
What I found great was how you could order and eat lunch from the restaurant and then take fresh seafood to go. I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the fish market which reminded me of other fish markets I have visited on my travels.
If you are planning to stay at eat, you should know what to expect. Dont expect table service. There werent even tables for guests to sit down at and eat. Instead, there were circular standing tables scattered around the fish market along with three communal style tables. This was no big deal for me and added to the experience.
You could always take your order to go, but I wouldnt recommend eating in the area directly surrounding the market. While it hurts me to talk poorly about some of the people in the area, the constant harassment for food, money, and cigarettes was not enjoyable.

It Takes A Village To Make A Crab Cake
“People from all around the world come here to Baltimore just to grab a bite of the famous Faidleys crab cake,” Al says in his new TODAY All Day series “Family Style,” which premieres Wednesday. “Its made from fresh Maryland crab and family love.”
Faidleys has been in Nancy Faidley Devines family for four generations. She created her own crab cake recipe in 1987 and told TODAY she hasn’t changed it since. Her secrets include using crushed saltines instead of breadcrumbs, which bind the crab to a creamy “magic sauce.” The crab cakes at Faidley’s are deep fried in soybean oil and then served up with an array of sides including macaroni and cheese, potato salad and coleslaw.
“I watch people for the fist time putting it in their mouth and they say, ‘Oh my God.’ And they’re standing at a table in a market,” Faidley Devine told Al. “They’re not sitting down to a white table cloth and having someone serve it on a silver platter. It’s on a paper plate, but it belongs on a silver platter.”
One of the most lovable parts about Faidley’s is that its core menu has stayed the same for decades even Al recalled the iconic crab cake tasting exactly as it did when he first visited 26 years ago.
“I think that people are astonished to see my parents at 84 and 89 still working, Faidley Devines daughter, Damye Hahn, told TODAY. People ask her for autograph, they ask her for her picture, they ask her to hold their babies … Its really fun.

An astounding six sets of relatives work at the 3,500-square-foot original. Remel Watson has been there for 36 years. Her 23-year-old daughter, Donya Fleming, for five. Donyas uncle, Lou, has worked there since 1979. He started selling fish, has shucked countless oysters , and now is a manager.
Me and Mr. Bill are close, says Fleming. I only spent 10 years with my dad, and I spent 40 with him. He taught me a lot about business and life. Do the right thing, work for what you want, and believe in your dreams.
Donell Kindell, now 40, started at Faidleys when he was 14. Ten years ago, Nancy chose him to become the only person other than her to make crab cakes. The promotion wasnt quite as auspicious as it might seem.
At the time, I had gotten in trouble, says Kindell, whose father also works at Faidleys. To keep me from getting back into that same kind of trouble, she made me come make crab cakes next to her. I think that she saw that I was a good kid. I wasnt a troublemaker. It was just something that happened that one time. As long as youre honest with her, shell give you a second chance.
Nancy doesnt remember this story, but laughs when its recounted to her.
Bill and I both feel that were better off giving people second chances, she says. Things happen in peoples lives. We know that. I also use it as a teaching opportunity for a lot of these young people who can learn from their mistakes so that they dont make them again.

On Wednesdays, you can get their 1/2 pound crab cake for just $15. This broiled beauty is all jumbo lump crab and while you need to order sides separately, you dont really need the sides. All you really need is a glass of wine or a beer and this massive beauty of a crab cake.
