Impress Your Restaurant Clients
Prove that you can meet demand as soon as you acquire your first client. For restaurant clients in particular, you’ll need to prove that you can produce the desserts you supply at the same or increasing volume and consistent quality, according to information posted on University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s food website. When it comes to producing desserts, consistent volume and quality depend on, but are not limited to:
- Reliable ingredient vendors
- Reliable cooking and baking equipment
- Space — square footage — to handle any increased volume
- Time in your schedule
- Transportation for deliveries
Georgia Cottage Food Labeling
All cottage foods in Georgia must be labeled with the business name and home address of the cottage food producer, the common name of the cottage food, the ingredients in descending order of prominence by weight, allergen labeling according to FDA requirements, and the statement: MADE IN A COTTAGE FOOD OPERATION THAT IS NOT SUBJECT TO STATE FOOD SAFETY INSPECTIONS in at least 10-point Times New Roman or Arial font. If a nutrition claim is made about the food, the food must be labeled according to the FDA requirements for nutritional claims. Cottage food that is individually packaged must be labeled with the net weight of the packaged food. Get Your Online System Up And Running
Once you’ve done the planning it’s time to build your online presence. Start with a website or order form. Jonathan believes your website shouldn’t be too fancyââ¬âall it needs is enticing pictures of your items and a simple way for customers to order.
“Simplify the online experience for your customer as much as possible. When it comes to setting up a site, less is more. I really can’t reiterate that enough. à Keep things simple and approachable. Buying should be effortless. “ââ¬â Jonathan Israfil
Customers need three things from your website: to be able to browse your menu, see your prices and make orders. For business owners, you need to make sure your web platform accepts payments and allows you to quickly manage orders and inventory.
We might be biased, but you can easily do this with Paperform. In minutes you can upload images of your baked goods, set prices and build a beautiful order form for your bakeryââ¬âit’s simpler, cheaper and much faster than building a website. It’s also easier to maintain and keep updated with your latest products.
Where To Sell Crafts Online For Free
This is a question I see come up a lot. When it comes to selling your products online for free, your options are limited.
Classified sites are typically free to post and sell because transactions happen off the platform. Examples of classified sites are:
- Facebook Marketplace
These wouldnt be my top choices for handmade businesses selling online because they tend to be platforms people use to sell their unwanted items and where buyers go to find a good deal. Those are two things we dont want to be associated with your handmade products: unwanted and good deal.
That being said, if your craft business is in the startup phase and youre short on cash, you can test these types of platforms out. Just be sure to keep your listings on-brand. Meaning, if you want people to see your handmade products as valuable items, post professional-looking photos, have well-written descriptions, respond to messages in a timely manner, etc.
Technically, you can use a business social media account to list your products and encourage people to direct message you to purchase an item. This method can be hard to track sales and isnt the most streamlined experience for the customer. If you plan to accept payments online, youll need a PayPal account to accept online payments. These services charge you a fee for each transaction.
If you set up a website for your craft business, youll have more costs to consider such as:

Create A Pricing Spread Sheet
A costing sheet is easier to make that you think, and once its created, the file does all the hard work for you.
List Out Your Ingredients
I made a master sheet of every ingredient I buy for my cakes, ranging from butter to freeze-dried strawberry powder! After I made my ingredients list, I created a price column next to it.
Price of Each Ingredient
I then scoured my grocery store and receipts to figure outthe price of each ingredient.
But you dont need to know how much a container of salt is.You need to know much a tsp costs, or how much a cup of flour is! The nextcolumn I made shares a standard portion size for each ingredient.
For instance, I measure baking powder by the teaspoon, and brown sugar by the cup.
Calculate the Cost per Unit
This next step takes some time. You have to figure out howmany servings of each ingredient a container or bag has. For example, a smallbag of granulated sugar contains about 8 cups of sugar.
If youve made it this far, youre golden. You can now easily calculate the cost per unit of each ingredient, and link it your recipes!
Calculate the Cost for Your Most Popular Recipes
I made a tab for each of my most popular cake recipes, andthen calculated the cost of each of my batter and frosting flavors.
I know this is a ton of work, but its worth it. It alsohelps you know how much money youre actually making on each cake you sell.
Where Can I Sell Handmade Items Near Me
If you want to sell your handmade products online but you dont want to ship your items , or you want to target consumers who live closer to you , consider the following options.
38. BUILD A WEBSITE
Do you need your own website to sell handmade? No especially not in the beginning. But you should have a website if youre serious about building a successful business.
As a consumer, I can only gather so much information from a businesss Etsy shop and if Im going to become a loyal customer , I want to be able to visit a dedicated website to , add to my bookmarks, learn more about the business, etc.
Websites have become easier to build, without expensive developers, through tools like:
However, it takes months, sometimes even years, to begin seeing decent organic traffic, so its a good idea to get your website up and running sooner than later even if you dont plan to drive traffic to it yet.
Organic traffic is website traffic that comes from visitors who discover your website when searching phrases on search engines like Google, as opposed to traffic that visits your website by clicking on your paid ad or social media post.
You can focus website content on keywords you want your website to rank for. For example, if I have a jewelry business and I want to sell my pieces online, but to people who live within my city or province, I can focus on using my city and provinces names in my content /

Find The Right Workspace
Thinking about setting up shop in your home? First, research the zoning laws in your area to see if you are allowed to do so. Not all states in the U.S. require you to have your kitchen inspected, but it’s a good idea to do so. You should also think about how you’ll store your ingredients and finished products, considering both refrigerated and dry storage. If youve got big dreams of stocking the shelves of specialty gourmet stores around the country, operating out of a commercial kitchen is the route for you. Commercial workspaces can be a great resource for start-up food businesses, since they give you access to large kitchen equipment for an affordable price. With the local and artisanal food movement on the rise, incubator and catering kitchens are popping up all over the country. Check out this kitchen incubator map to see some options. Some churches, schools and restaurants also allow access to use their commercial kitchens during off-hours. Be sure to research requirements related to operating out of a commercial kitchen, including facility permits and insurance.

You Should Be Too Expensive For Some People
Back in 2016 , my average ratefor an 8-inch layer cake was $100. I had more demand that I could handle, andpeople are willing to pay a pretty penny for custom things here in NYC.
And even then, people still told me I should charge more formy cakes. It blew my mind.
People frequently spend $100+ on a custom cake. Your rateshould be high enough that it causes some people to walk away. If no one istelling you that youre too expensive, youre probably not charging enough.
If youre unsure how much people in your area are willing to pay for a custom cake, its ok to ask around.
You can get a read on prices in your area by reaching out to other custom bakers in your area. Its also a great way to network!
Taxes And Other Legal Issues
Check with your state Controller to see if your product is subject to sales tax and if you need to obtain a permit and charge sales tax on your goods. Paying back taxes with fines and fees is no fun. Start out on the right foot.
Pick a business name and register it as a DBA with your county. This ensures that no one else in your county can use your business name and that you are not using anyone elses business name. Optional you may also wish to conduct a national search to verify that this name is not in use by others, or trademarked by someone else. Trademarks can be tricky, and sometimes the best thing to do is to contact an attorney that specializes in these matters.
Speak with a tax or legal professional about how to structure your business, whether it be a Sole Proprietorship, LLC, or some other entity. In general, setting up a business structure helps protect you personally from the businesss liabilities. Liability insurance for home baking businesses can also be obtained, usually around $500 per year. Contact your home insurance agent to see if they have a policy for you.

Register Your Online Bakery Business
Before you launch your business you need to officially register your baking business. This isn’t the most exciting part of the process, but think of it as an official stamp on your new venture. It’s a way for you to make things official.
The specifics about how this works depend on your country and local government. In Australia, for example, you’ll just have to register your ABN, whereas in the US there are additional costs and processes to go through to certify your ability to produce and distribute baked goods.
Broadly, this is about making sure you cover your legal bases. Is your business name registered? Are you allowed to operate a business from your home? Are you certified for the safe production of food? Depending where you live there can be more hoops to jump through than you may have initially considered.

How And Where Can You Sell
Individuals, under most states rules may usually sell directly to other individuals, not businesses, such as restaurants or grocery stores. A number of states limit the sales of home processed foods to farmers markets, bake sales and charity events. And usually, while you may have a website to promote your products, you may not sell online or across state lines. Indirect Sales are allowed in California, Maine and Ohio. New Hampshire and Pennsylvania allow it indirectly only at farmers markets, and producers’ premises. If you are considering cookies, cakes, or candy sales, see these overviews
