Buddy Is Almost Never At The Bakery

What Really Happened To The Cake Boss?

Perhaps the most shocking revelation from this list comes in at #3. You read that right. Buddy, the owner of Carlo’s Bakery whose entire lifeblood lies in its success and who has been working in the establishment for over twenty years, is almost never physically at the bakery. Regulars of Carlo’s claim that since the show has hit it big, Buddy only shows up when it is time to film the show and commercials for the store.

You can’t really blame the guy for not wanting to be there. On the rare occasions that he is present fans line up like tourists at the local zoo to try and catch a glimpse or a picture of the famed baker. Likewise, the place has become such a madhouse during months of high tourism that you’d have to be crazy to want to deal with these people.

However, it’s odd that the man who helped build Carlo’s into the juggernaut it is today seemingly wants nothing to do with it outside of his TV show.

He Wont Make An Ugly Cake

He may be willing to go the extra mile to make sure his customers get the cake of their dreams, but the Cake Boss still has standards. The customer may always be right, but Buddy isnt afraid to tell them when they are very, very wrong– at least in his opinion.

If a client wanted a crazy mix of flavors that will never taste good, Buddy will tell them so. If a bride wants a hideous cake that should never see the light of day, hell warn them about that too. Most of the time, a client will take Buddys advice. However, if a customer seemed too stubborn to change course, Buddy would try another tactic.

When the Cake Boss thought refusing a clients requests would lead to trouble, he would simply pretend that he wasnt available to make the cake in the requested time frame. Smooth, Buddy, smooth.

He Fired His Own Sister

Despite all of the focus on family values and keeping up traditions, family feuds are sometimes unavoidable. After Buddys sister, Mary Sciarrone, couldnt drop the drama, Buddy decided to drop her.

Mary had become notorious for her bluntness and rude interactions with customers and staff alike. Despite Buddys own brashness, he felt that Marys bedside manner was putting his customers off.

Buddy confronted his sister after repeated incidents and eventually gave her the boot. He swore that Mary would never again have the opportunity to manage any of his several bakeries. While things were tense and awkward for viewers and crew alike, the decision to fire Mary was still greeted with favor by fans of the show who had long taken issue with her negative attitude.

He’s Had Five Surgeries Already

“I had another hand surgery today,” . “My family is nursing me back to health Thank you for all your prayers, positive thoughts and well wishes! “

Naturally, the Cake Boss thanked his doctors and the staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery with something sweet. He brought them a cake in the shape of the building.

E! News reported that Valastro still had limited mobility in two of his fingers and was experiencing numbness after four procedures.

Appearing on Rachael Ray on Apr. 12, Valastro shared a promising update after his fifth surgery.

“My hand is coming along. I had my fifth surgery about a month ago and it was a huge success because now I definitely have a lot more of my mobility back,” he told host Rachael Ray, opening and closing his hand. “So I can make, like, a whole fist. I can make all of my fingers straight, and I got about, I’d say 75 percent of my strength back. So, you know, it’s coming along, but I’m still in physical therapy.”

He also showed that mobility in action, teaching Ray and her viewers a cake piping technique that he was able to execute himself with his injured hand.

Valastro didn’t say whether or not he had more surgeries scheduled, but it’s clear that he’s back in the kitchen and still working towards being 100 percent.

The Injury Occurred When Valastro Was Bowling

Who are Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro

A representative for the baker told Entertainment Tonight that the accident happened in Valastro’s home bowling alley last September.

“There was a malfunction with the bowling pinsetter, a common fix in the past, but it turned into a terrible accident,” the rep said. “After trying to release the bowling pin from the cage mechanism, his right hand became lodged and compressed inside the unit.” His teenage sons, Buddy and Marco, had to cut their father’s hand out of the pinsetter with a saw. He had two emergency surgeries in quick succession.

In November, Valastro spoke out about the injury in depth for the first time. Talking to ET, he said he was thankful that he hadn’t lost his right hand completely, but that the prognosis for recovery was still in flux.

“It’s very, very stiff. I don’t really have as much motion, as much strength, dexterity,” he explained. “So, it’s really just a matter of continuing to do rehab. I’d say I’m probably at, like, 10 or 15 percent of the strength that I used to have It’s just really gonna be a matter of time to see exactly what comes back with the nerve too My fingers are kinda numb in the middle, you know?”

Obviously, Valastro’s passion and career requires the use of his hands. In the fall, he was realistic about the movement and strength he might or might not regain with his dominant hand, but he was also adamant that he wasn’t giving up.

The Valastro Family Doesn’t Care Much For Cake

With a name like Cake Boss, it’s pretty obvious that the lives of the Valastro Family would revolve around the dessert in question. Even the spin-offs from the series are cake-focused in their own way! Cake is the lifeblood of Carlo’s Bakery without the cake decorating talents of Buddy and his crew, there would never have even been a show.

The deliciously creative creations of the show have gone on to awe anyone who’s stood in their presence on top of providing them with a tasty snack.

However, the Valastros aren’t really that crazy about cake themselves. Perhaps it’s because the pastry in question has seemingly taken over their lives, or perhaps they realized a long time ago that you don’t make it far in the cake decorating industry when you keep eating your product.

When Buddy was asked by an interviewer what the family was going to be eating for the holidays, he responded by saying that they weren’t really into cake as a dessert, and preferred things like cannolis and eclairs.

How Severe Was Buddy Valastro’s Injury

Buddy Valastro’s injury caused nerve damage that was too bad it made him uncertain that he would ever be able to bake again.

In the beginning, his hand was weak, with only 10-15% strength. He was told the healing process could take between nine months or a year due to the reconnecting of multiple nerves. Fortunately, after five surgeries, about 75% of the energy was back.

While appearing on Rachael Ray’s talk show, he told the host he is finally starting to feel like himself again. He called the surgery a huge success. He said,

Now I definitely have a lot more of my mobility back, so I can make a whole fist, I can make all my fingers straight, and I’ve got about 75% of my strength back.

How is the Cake Boss doing? Buddy Valastro is back to cooking pastry at Carlo’s Bakery. He alluded to feeling lucky he could work again.

He said,

The fact that I’m still able to do what I love, it was amazing.

Cousin Anthony’s Bigoted Tweets

Every Batman needs his Robin, and for ten seasons Cousin Anthony was Buddy’s. Well, maybe he was more of a Bat-Mite than a Robin, but the point still stands Anthony was the character on the show who was portrayed as a wide-eyed young man who made a bunch of mistakes but who always meant well. This was why it was such a shock when, in the show’s tenth season, Anthony quit his job at Carlo’s without so much as a warning.

In 2013, in the aftermath of the horrific Boston Marathon Bombings, Cousin Anthony sent out a tweet that many considered to be based in bigotry. He claimed that America should stop “…letting these Animals into our country so they can keep attacking us…” The tweet came before the FBI had identified any suspects in the murders, and many followers claimed that Anthony was racially profiling the attacks to promote his own political agenda. Things didn’t get better when Cousin Anthony started confronting his critics.

cake boss star buddy valastro needs surgery after

The Cake Boss might believe in simple wedding cakes, but when a guest wants to go all out, Buddy goes all out. When socialite Devorah Rose wanted the most elaborate, expensive cake possible for her diamond gala, Buddy promised to make it happen– and happen it did.

Devorahs $30 million cake was covered in emeralds, sapphires, and rubies. Since it was made for a diamond gala, there were also plenty of diamonds adorning the high-priced treat.

The cake went on to break the record for the most expensive cake ever baked. Before Buddys socialite cake won the title, the most expensive cake on record was a Black Swan cake made in China for a mere $315,000.

Despite the expensive price tag, the cake was still tastefully decorated with the jewels and decorations used sparingly.
