Rather than just being a place where you could buy a book, what if Barnes & Noble could become a place where you could discover a book? I spend a fair bit of time in Duck, North Carolina where our family loves Ducks Cottagea charming book and coffee store that has a very well-curated selection of titles. We have all bought a number of books from there, almost entirely based on the owners handwritten recommendation notes.

As we navigate the Covid-19 pandemic and start the long process of recovery, what will bring shoppers through Barnes & Nobles doors may not be the desire to simply purchase a book, but the desire to be a part of something in the community. I would suggest that is something shoppers will remember, talk about and that will bring them back.

What The Independent Stores Can Teach The Mega One-Stop Shops

Yes, a lot of stores have experienced tough times recently, yet indies have been working hard to set themselves apart. The assumption, particularly with the quarantine and lockdowns, was that small independent stores were doomed. And while some stores are indeed no longer in business, others have emerged with strength.

Why is it that these indie bookstores are defying expectations? If success were just about getting books quickly and conveniently, wed just go online to buy them, wouldnt we?

Getting Closer, Despite the Isolation

St Century: Operating In An Electronic Environment

2000s

In 2004, it was reported that the reading of books was on the decline in America, with the number of non-reading adults increasing by 17 million between 1992 and 2002. Despite this, Barnes & Noble claimed that its retail store business was expanding in the book market. Beginning in 1999, Barnes & Noble owned GameStop, a video game and electronics retail outlet. The company distributed its shares in GameStop in late 2004, spinning it off into its own company in an attempt to simplify its corporate structure.

CEO Leonard Riggio stepped down in 2002, naming his younger brother and former acting chief executive of BarnesandNoble.com, Stephen Riggio, to succeed him. Some corporate governance experts noted that this appointment could potentially cause conflict of interest, but the company board noted that Riggio’s experience at the company made him the right person for the job. Stephen Riggio stepped down from the position in 2010.

2010s

Barnes & Noble began reducing its overall presence in the 2010s, closing its original flagship store in early 2014. In mid-2014, the company announced it would separate its Nook Media division from its retail store division.

In the 2018 fiscal year that ended in July, the company overall losses reached $17 million.

Would An Office Depot Work In Hoboken

9/1/2011 Update:

Ever since Barnes & Noble at 59 Washington St. closed back in 2010 everyone was wondering who theyd want next tenant to be. From Staples, to Carlos Bakery, and even the most desired business: Trader Joes.

Well now were talking about an Office Depot taking this spot late this year or early 2012.

Most people I know buy their electronics online, and the need for basic office supplies in Hoboken doesnt seem like itd be so strong that a business like this could survive with the rent I suspect theyll be paying.

Can Office Depot thrive in Hoboken selling reams of paper? Or will they fill a convenient niche for people who quickly need the items they sell?

The Barnes & Noble Review

The Essential Cake Boss (A Condensed Edition of Baking ...

The Barnes & Noble Review is an online magazine, hosted on Barnes & Noble’s website, that publishes evaluations of both fiction and nonfiction works, along with essays, interviews, and pieces on other topics. It was launched in October 2007 by Barnes & Noble CEO Steve Riggio and James Mustich Jr., publisher of the book catalog A Common Reader. Regular contributors to the magazine have included book critics Michael Dirda, Brooke Allen, Laura Miller, and Adam Kirsch, as well as prominent writers in fields outside of literary criticism, such as political journalists Chris Hayes and Ezra Klein, philosopher A.C. Grayling, music critic Robert Christgau, and cartoonist Ward Sutton. Miller, who has written for Salon and Mustich’s Common Reader, said, “The reviews are the same as anywhere else”, adding that the tone and length of the pieces evoke The New York Times Book Review rather than the less formal Salon. The magazine’s web traffic flourished during its first few years. According to Compete.com, it amassed 50,000 unique visitors in December 2009.

Waterstones Boss Takes Helm At Barnes & Noble

The boss of UK book retailer Waterstones is being parachuted in to help the turnaround of giant US chain Barnes & Noble.

James Daunt’s appointment was announced as part of a takeover of Barnes & Noble by hedge fund Elliott Management, which already owns Waterstones.

The deal values the largest US book chain, hit by the rise of online sites such as Amazon, at close to $700m.

Elliott hopes Mr Daunt can repeat his turnaround of Waterstones.

Mr Daunt said: “Physical bookstores the world over face fearsome challenges from online and digital. We meet these with investment and with all the more confidence for being able to draw on the unrivalled bookselling skills of these two great companies.”

He will be based in New York, but remain at the helm of Waterstones. Elliott bought a majority stake in Waterstones last year from Russian billionaire Alexander Mamut, who rescued the chain from near-collapse in 2011.

Barnes & Noble has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1993. Its rapid growth and big-store format helped to sideline many independent booksellers.

But the chain suffered after Amazon turned the market upside down, and Barnes & Noble’s efforts to pull in a more tech-savvy audience with its Nook e-book reader failed to compete with the Kindle and other tablets.

In 2014, Barnes & Noble closed its New York Fifth Avenue store – once the world’s largest bookstore – and has faced declining sales for at least the past three years. It has about 627 outlets.
