Baby Allergies And Intolerances

vegan vanilla cake | egg-free | dairy-free | soy-free | nut-free |

One of the first things health care professionals look at when a breastfed baby is extremely fussy or gassy is moms diet. Of course, babies can be fussy or gassy and not have an intolerance or allergy to something moms eating. Other important signs to look out for: rash, hives, eczema, sore bottom, dry skin wheezing or asthma congestion or cold-like symptoms red, itchy eyes ear infections irritability, fussiness, colic intestinal upsets, vomiting, constipation and/or diarrhea, or stools with mucus or blood. I should also note that sometimes the blood in the stool isnt visible. In my friends case the blood was microscopic, so they wouldnt have known if they hadnt had a diaper tested!

If a health care provider thinks your baby is suffering from cows milk protein intolerance or cows milk protein allergy , the typical recommendation is to start by cutting dairy out of the moms diet for a few months and seeing if that improves symptoms. Your health care provider may or may not recommend that you cut out soy at this time as well. After a few months they might recommend reintroducing again to see if the symptoms return or not. Most babies will grow out of the intolerance or allergy by the age of 3.

How To Make Dairy Free Chocolate Cake

Its so easy to make this chocolate cake, you are going to totally love it.

Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray three 8-inch cake pans for a three layer cake, or two 9-inch cake pans for a two layer cake, with non-stick spray and line the bottoms with circles of parchment paper. Set aside.

Then sift all purpose flour and unsweetened cocoa powder into a mixing bowl and add sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt and mix together.

Prepare some vegan buttermilk by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to a measuring jug and then adding soy milk up to the 1 cup line and letting it curdle. You can also use almond milk for this step if you prefer, but soy milk works really well.

Add the vegan buttermilk to the mixing bowl along with some oil, applesauce and vanilla extract and mix into a thick batter.

Then add in 1 cup of boiling hot coffee and whisk it in with a hand whisk.

The batter will be thin once the hot coffee is mixed in, and this is how its supposed to be for this recipe.

Divide the batter evenly between your prepared cake pans and then bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of one of the cakes comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool for a few minutes in the pans before transferring to wire cooling racks to cool completely before frosting.

How I Went Dairy & Soy

I cant believe its been a year that Ive been living a restricted, dairy and soy free diet. When Piper was a tiny baby she had so many G.I. issues that were eventually resolved as reflux and an intolerance to dairy and possibly soy. This wasnt just her frequent & abundant spit ups but blood in her stools and then in her spit up as well. As a brand new mom its pretty scary to see in real life the scenarios unfold that all of your pamphlets and baby books tell you require immediate medical attention. After too many trips to the doctor to count and so much anxiety it was a relief once I eliminated dairy and soy and we saw some improvement. Piper was eventually put on medication for her reflux which I resisted for far too long as soon as we started it her spit ups diminished as did the blood.

Starting this diet was a huge and challenging change for me I love food and cooking with a newborn presents its own set of new challenges as it is, let alone searching for new meals to make that fit within the dairy and soy-free parameters. I would day dream about being able to order a pizza or just get carry out in my state of exhaustion. It seems like such a small thing to get so disrupted by and Im so grateful that Piper was and is OK and that this was the least of our worries but it was still really hard on me, none the less. Today Im hoping to share resources and meal ideas for other new moms who may be going through this same issue.

Do you ever wonder how to make your favorite recipes dairy-free? Let us show you the way by making some of our most well-loved baked goods without dairy. In this post we offer you a concise guide on how to bake dairy-free, from breakfast pastries to decadent desserts. Note: For the sake of this post, eggs are not considered dairy ingredients. If youre looking to bake without eggs, check out these vegan recipes.

The art of dairy-free baking can be distilled into five key tips. Use these pointers to guide your baking, and you’ll soon be making desserts and dishes everyone can enjoy.

1. Start with recipes that are already dairy-free.

Some of our favorite recipes dont call for any dairy ingredients at all we wager that’s true of some of your favorites, too. From Almond Cloud Cookies to Angel Food Cake to Whole-Grain Banana Bread, there are many delicious choices that dont require any adjustments.

Choose your recipes wisely based on how much substituting you’d have to do. Remember that while there are some fantastic dairy-free alternatives available, the fewer adjustments you make to a recipe the more likely it is to turn out as expected.

2. Substitute vegan butter 1:1 for regular butter

    How To Frost The Cakes

    • Place the first cake with the shiny side down on a plate or a cake plate.
    • Frost the top of the first cake. This will be the frosting in the center of your cake. I like a good amount of frosting in the center.
    • Place the second cake on top of the frosted first cake the shiny side down.
    • Frost the top and side of the cake with the remaining frosting.
    • I decorated the top with chocolate shavings and frosting flowers using a Wilton 1M tip.

Dairy Free Soy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

You would never guess these Dairy Free Soy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies have no dairy or soy protein! They are compliant with the MSPI Milk Soy Protein Intolerance diet. My family actually preferred these to the traditional butter version!

Here is another recipe from my days of following the MSPI diet while nursing my second baby. Normally I am not a fan of cooking with Crisco, but when you absolutely cannot have butter, these types of priorities often take a back seat. One nice thing about working with Crisco is that its stored at room temperature. You dont have to wait for it to soften like butter!

My mom and sister really loved these cookies and actually preferred them to the typical all butter chocolate chip cookie.

During my MSPI days, I relied on dairy free / soy free chocolate chips. Enjoy Life! Brand is my favorite and thankfully my local grocery store carries them in the health/organic food aisle. These chocolate chips were so good you would never know they were dairy free!

This recipe is actually adapted from the Nestle Toll House Cookie recipe, so you know it wont disappoint!
