The first step is to bake the cake according to the packages directions using a 9×13-in. baking pan.

Poke holes in the hot cake.

Mix together your 2 cups of milk and 1 package of the Hersheys instant chocolate pudding mix and pour this mixture over the cake, filling the holes.If you cannot find the Hersheys Chocolate Pudding at your local store you can substitute any instant chocolate pudding in its place.The quicker you do this process the better as the pudding starts to set up quickly and it makes it much harder to put down the holes.

Microwave the hot fudge topping for about 30 45 seconds or until it pours easily. Pour the fudge evenly over the top of the cake and let the cake cool completely.

In a medium bowl, combine the second pudding mix with the additional 2 cups of milk, once combined carefully fold in the Cool Whip. Spread the mixture evenly over the top of the cake.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. The longer it sits the better as the pudding gets set up really well and allows it time to get nice and cold. Store this cake covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.

This cake is precisely the type of dessert to make when you need chocolate and you need it fast. The method for baking this cake could not be easier and it uses ingredients that are likely to already be sitting in your pantry. As it bakes, this cake creates its own warm fudge sauce that acts as a bed for the moist fudgy cake layer on top.

I chose to use a dark cocoa powder and control the sweetness out of personal preference. I love the intense, almost bittersweet flavor of dark cocoa. Ensuring that the cake itself isn’t overly sweet makes this cake a perfect pairing with a big ole scoop ice cream. Maybe some sweetened whipped cream as well?

Once this comes out of the oven you’ll have a cake layer that’s magically risen to the top during the baking process. While its still warm, dig in there with a big spoon and you’ll get a soft fudgy chocolate cake on the top.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a layer of rich, warm, dark chocolate fudge sauce.

You could stop right here and dig in – you wouldn’t regret that decision.

But I’m not saying you have to serve this with vanilla ice cream…

But this cake was basically tailor made to do that very thing. So scoop it on, let that warm fudge sauce melt it into cold creamy streams that intermingle with the chocolate, and enjoy.

Chocolate Pudding Cake Recipe Ingredients:

  • Sugar White sugar is best, but you can also use brown sugar, or coconut sugar.
  • All purpose flour Either plain flour or a good 1-1 gluten free all purpose flour.
  • Cocoa powder Use a good quality cocoa powder, for a more intense chocolate flavor. If you enjoy dark and rich desserts, use dark cocoa powder. A dark cocoa powder will yield a rich and bitter-sweet chocolate flavoured pudding. A normal unsweetened cocoa powder, such as Hersheys unsweetened, will yield a milder chocolate flavoured pudding.
  • Baking powder Gives some rise to the pudding.
  • Salt Brings out the sweetness.
  • Milk – I used unsweetened almond milk, but any milk will work fine.
  • Butter unsalted is what I used. Vegan butter or margarine can also be used.
  • Vanilla extract A must for any good chocolate dessert!

It is so easy to make this cake! All you do is mix your batter and pour it into your dish. THEN mix together a sugar/cocoa DRY MIX> sprinkle it over the top> pour it over the dry mixture> bake> try-not-to-eat-the-whole-entire-pan.

In a test bake, I used both:

  • dark cocoa powder almost like a dutch processed cocoa powder shown in the above photographs
  • normal unsweetened cocoa powder like Hersheys regular unsweetened brand

We did this to show you the different results between the two cocoa powders.

Well be honest, this recipe is similar to our molten vegan chocolate pie, but without a crust, making it more similar to a brownie. However, it is still different.

The idea of this recipe is based on a classic Hersheys recipe that has been around for literally decades. But just because we are vegan doesnt mean that we also shouldnt be able to enjoy it. Therefore, we had to veganize this family favorite.

To me there is nothing better than hot fudge. Especially hidden underneath a layer of rich chocolate cake. This hot fudge pudding cake is the perfect addition to ice cream and makes a pretty awesome sundae! Its super rich, gooey and loaded with chocolate. This chocolate pudding cake is hard to resist!

It is so easy to make this cake. All you need is 10 minutes of prep time! Simply mix up the batter portion of the cake in one bowl them mix up the hot fudge portion in another. No need for a stand mixer.

The cake batter goes on the bottom and the brown sugar + cocoa powder gets sprinkled on top. Next you pour the hot water over the batter. Thats it! Make sure not to stir the hot water after it is added. Leaving it rest on the top makes the layer of gooey thick fudge!

For an extra lick of deliciousness, add REESES peanut butter chips or HERSHEYS butterscotch baking chips to the mix. When youre ready, garnish your pudding cake with whipped topping for the ultimate sweetness.

How To Make Hot Fudge Pudding Cake

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 pan, set aside. In a large bowl combine all purpose flour, brown sugar, instant coffee, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk, butter and vanilla. Mix until combined, do not over mix. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and set aside. In a small bowl combine brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Pour the hot water on top. Do not stir. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until center is almost set. Make sure not to over bake. Allow the cake to cool for 10-15 minutes. Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup white sugar 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup HERSHEY®’S Cocoa Powder 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk 1/3 cup butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/4 cup HERSHEY®’S Cocoa Powder 1 1/4 cups hot water

Instructions

1 Heat oven to 350 F. Combine 3/4 cup granulated sugar, flour, 1/4 cup cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk, butter and vanilla beat until smooth.

2 Pour batter into ungreased 9-inch square baking pan. Stir together remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa sprinkle mixture evenly over batter. Pour hot water over top do not stir.

3 Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until center is almost set. Remove from oven let stand 15 minutes. Serve in dessert dishes, spooning sauce from bottom of pan over top. Garnish with whipped topping, if desired.

  • Start by whisking the topping ingredients together then set aside
