To Make Ahead: Both frostings can be made ahead and placed in a covered container in the fridge. The coconut frosting will keep for 1-2 weeks, depending on the freshness of the ingredients used. The chocolate frosting will keep for 2-3 weeks. Remove frostings from the fridge an hour before youre ready to frost the cake, to give them time to come to room temperature.
To Freeze: After baking the cake layers, allow them to cool completely, then wrap them well in plastic wrap and stick each layer in a ziplock freezer bag. Freeze for up to three months. Frost the cakes when they are frozenthey are much easier to frost this way! The assembled German Chocolate Cake can also be frozen, covered well, for 2-3 months . Allow to come to room temperature before serving.
How To Make Easy Chocolate Cake
This chocolate sheet cake recipe makes one layer. If youre looking to make a taller cake, I recommend sticking with the original recipe since the texture will hold up better to layering.
For this quick and easy chocolate cake recipe, all you need are a couple bowls to mix the ingredients and a 9×13-inch pan. Make sure to grease the pan well, as you dont want any cake sticking to the edges.
In a large bowl, sift together the dry ingredients and then add in the sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, melted butter and sour cream until smooth. Add this to the flour mixture and stir until slightly combined.
The chocolate cake batter will be thick, but that is perfectly fine. Just mix it a little bit, and then add in the hot water and keep mixing until combined. You will likely have lumps in the beginning, but mix gently to incorporate all the ingredients and eventually stir with a whisk just until smooth.
Bake the homemade chocolate cake for 30-40 minutes, until a skewer or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool slightly before you make the chocolate ganache glaze.

Why Isnt There Coffee In This Recipe
Some recipes call for coffee to bring out the rich deep flavors of chocolate. I use a different method, blooming. Blooming cocoa powder is mixing the cocoa powder with a hot liquid, like hot water or melted butter.
For this cake, simply mix hot water into the cake batter before its baked. The hot water reacts with the cocoa powder in the batter, enhancing its rich chocolate flavor. I dont even boil the water. Just use hot tap water.
For the frosting, the cocoa powder is bloomed by mixing it with melted butter, creating intense deep chocolate flavor.
Best Chocolate Fudge Frosting
This recipe uses another favorite chocolate frosting that is super fudgy. What makes it so good and fudgy? Melted Butter!
Besides the melted butter, this frosting has the other usual subjects: powdered sugar, cocoa, salt and vanilla.
It also uses milk to thin it and it is important you use whole milk and not heavy cream. Heavy Whipping Cream will make it too gloppy to spread.
The most important tip about the frosting is that, because it starts with melted butter, you have to make it right before you use it. It will start to harden after a little bit, so have the cakes all ready to frost BEFORE making the frosting, and itll spread just fine.

An Easy Classic Chocolate Sheet Cake
Well since the other version is a slow bake cake that bakes at 300 degrees and that can sometimes throw people off, not to mention it takes longer to bake, I decided to make a version that bakes at the usual 350. I wanted to be sure it was just as tasty though! Surprisingly, that wasnt as easy of a task as Id expected.
There was a fair amount of experimenting, but the big thing was decreasing some of the liquid so allow for a quicker baking cake. I played around with decreasing the milk, oil and water. They all have similar effects on the cake, but produce slightly different results. I primarily went back and forth on the oil and milk. I ended up with a little more milk than oil. Oil adds great moisture to the cake, but too much makes it a bit of a firmer cake. Reducing it a touch and leaving more milk makes it a little lighter and softer. The final result is perfect and so delicious!

What Type Of Cocoa Powder Should I Use
I recommend Hersheys Cocoa Powder because you can get it in almost any grocery store in America, and it works. This is unsweetened cocoa powder, NOT the sweetened mix used to make hot chocolate.
You could use another brand of naturally processed cocoa powder, like Nestle or Ghirardeli. I would not recommend Dutch processed cocoa powders in this recipe because they are less acidic and produce less rise in the cake.
What Kind Of Cocoa Powder Did You Use
I used Hersheys Unsweetened Cocoa Powder in order to use a brand that is most widely available to my readers. Im also fond of using higher quality cocoa powders like Ghiradellis or cocoa powders from specialty chocolatier shops, but those are pretty pricey. I dont recommend using cheap store brands.

Getting A Pot Of Flour
Flour is made at windmills .
The closest windmill to a bank is the one in the Cooks Guild .
Just add grain to the hopper at the top of the windmill and then operate the hopper controls.
Then, on the ground floor, use an empty pot on the flour bin to get a pot of flour.
This process doesnt give any cooking experience.
But just like milk & eggs, pots of flour can also be bought at the Culinaromancers Chest in Lumbridge Basement.

Can I Substitute Milk Or Make It Dairy
If you dont have buttermilk you can substitute milk but you also need to add an acid or the baking soda wont work. If youre substituting milk, add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to the milk that will create buttermilk!
To use non-dairy milk, just make sure to add 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice to the wet ingredients. This will create the chemical reaction needed to activate the baking soda.
