How To Make Colored Gender Reveal Powder
For whichever method you use, these are the supplies you will need:
- large baking sheet
Dont use any bowl thats not metal or glass. If you use any other kind of bowl, you run the risk of it being stained by the food coloring.
Preheat the oven to 170 degrees. You can go slightly warmer if you want, but super-high temperatures risk scorching the cornstarch and ruining the beautiful color youve achieved.
Pour all of your cornstarch into the bowl. Do this gently or you will have a huge dust cloud go everywhere! I recommend holding your bowl over the top of the can, then turn it upside down and slowly lift up while jiggling and tapping to get the powder out.
Add one cup of water. The ideal ratio of cornstarch to water for this method is 3:1. A pound of cornstarch is just shy of three cups.
With gloves on, combine the cornstarch and water with your hands. You dont have to use gloves for this part, but if you dont, your fingernails are going to end up caked with gunk. The cornstarch should remain powdery youre just trying to dampen all of it with the water. If it becomes liquid or slimy, youve added too much water and should add back some cornstarch until it behaves more like a powder again.

There are many different ideas on how to make a gender reveal cake, but this ombre cake is my favorite. Its so pretty and yet simple to make.
I made a vanilla cake, divided the cake batter into three bowls, and dyed each layer with a different amount of the same food coloring. I used this soft pink gel food coloring which is concentrated so a tiny drop of it was all I needed to get the color I wanted for the first bowl. Then I added a bit more food coloring to the second bowl until I liked the color, and did the same with the third bowl.
To make things even simpler, you can dye the entire batter using the same color and divide the batter into three. This will also make a gorgeous cake.

Some people would use pink or blue frosting to decorate any cake recipe of their choice. Others choose to use gender specific color of frosting to fill the cake layers and then frost the outside off the cake with either all white or pink and blue.
So to apply this method youll need to have the following:

Level all your cake layers. Pipe a ring of icing around the first layer of cake and fill with the colored frosting. Repeat the process with the second layer.

TikTok user @bakemydaymimo posted a viral video that has amassed nearly 10 million views where she said she needed to bake a new cake upon realizing the filling in the already-frosted cake was not dyed. Yes! I made my second batch of gender reveal powder differently , with the desire to get it completely done as fast as possible. And it totally worked with ZERO mold in the powder over a week later, so feel free to use this new method instead! It still doesnt guarantee your powder will never mold, but if youre in a rush because youre going to use the powder soon anyway, it is absolutely perfect!
So, take it from me, someone who has experimented thoroughly with making her own colored powder try my quick-drying method below. Its proven to be better!

All three types of buttercream are delicious and simple to make if you take them one step at a time. Flavor, texture, color and method of making are all a little different.
Swiss Meringue Buttercream:
- Texture: Meringue based. Very light and airy. Smooth. Almost identical to Italian Meringue Buttercream.
- Color: Can be made very white when less than a drop of purple food coloring is added to counter act the yellow from the butter.
- Method: Egg WHITE-sugar mixture is heated using a double boiler. After the sugar has dissolved and mixture has reached 160F it is whipped for 8-10 minutes. When cooled, butter is added. It can be used immediately or refrigerated/froze for later.
Italian Meringue Buttercream:
- Texture: Meringue based. Very light and airy. Smooth. Almost identical to Swiss Meringue Buttercream.
- Color: Naturally white. May have some yellow due to butter. Can also be made white when less than a drop of purple food coloring is added to counter act the yellow from the butter.
- Method: Egg WHITE are whipped into an egg foam. A sugar mixture is heated to around 240F. After sugar has dissolved and temperature is reached the sugar syrup is carefully and slowly poured into the egg white foam. When cooled, butter is mix in. Buttercream can be used immediately or refrigerated/froze for later.
