How To Make This Copycat Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake Recipe
STEP ONE: Line a 9-inch springform pan with plastic wrap. Set it aside.

If you do not have a springform pan, you can use a round cake pan lined with plastic wrap.
STEP TWO: Heat the oven to 350°F. Line a 10×15-inch baking sheet with parchment paper. Set it aside.
STEP THREE: Add the crushed chocolate sandwich cookies to a small mixing bowl.
PRO TIP:
Easily crush the cookies in either a food processor or in a Ziploc bag with a rolling pin.
STEP FOUR: Stir in the melted butter until completely combined.
STEP FIVE: Evenly spread the coated cookie crumbs on the lined baking sheet. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow the cookie crumbs to cool completely.
STEP SIX: While the cookie crumbs are baking, remove the chocolate ice cream from the freezer and allow it to thaw. This will make spreading the ice cream into the pan much easier.
STEP SEVEN: Once the ice cream has thawed for 15 to 20 minutes, evenly spread the layer of chocolate ice cream into the bottom of the springform pan in an even layer. Place it back in the freezer for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
STEP EIGHT: Just before you are ready for the hot fudge layer, remove the lid to the hot fudge and place it in the microwave for 20 to 25 seconds. This will soften the hot fudge, making it easier to spread on top of the chocolate ice cream layer.
STEP NINE: Using either a silicone spatula or an offset spatula, evenly spread the hot fudge over the top of the chocolate ice cream layer.

This ice cream cake is actually a great recipe to make ahead. You can layer everything together, cover it and leave it in the pan you built it in. It should be fine sitting in the pan for about a week ahead of time. Then you can frost it the of or the day before you need it so that the decorations looks nice and fresh.
After decorating, its ideal to store it in a container in the freezer. If you dont have a container that size or space in your freezer, itll be fine for a few days in your freezer.

Timing & Freezer Space
Now that weve talked about that, lets talk about how long this will take you. Making an ice cream cake is not a lot of work I dare say its easier than a baked cake. But it does take time almost entirely hands-off time, but still. If you want an ice cream cake for a birthday party, I would start at least three days ahead.
You need a day to create the first layer, which has to freeze until solid. Then the next ice cream layer, and after that, it freezes overnight so its stable enough to remove the springform ring. Then you frost the cake with whipped cream, and its really best to let it sit in the freezer one more night before serving. Youre always fighting the clock when working with ice cream, so give yourself plenty of time to let things chill out between steps.
Last but not least: freezer space. You need a lot. Enough to slide a whole sheet pan into the freezer. Upright freezers are best for this side-by-side and bottom-drawer freezers make it tough. Clear your freezer and do a test run with the pans before getting started.
