In the ideal situation, youve already have ideas of who might want to enroll in your class. Maybe youve got a blog or Instagram account with a few followers interested in what you do.

Email Marketing: Sending emails to people that might want to join your class remains an effective way to get the work out. You can encourage people to join your email list by letting people know that theyll be the first to know about your classes here. Social Media: Everyone is on social media. This is a way to market your business for free with nothing more than sweat equity. Tell your followers and fans about your upcoming classes.

Michelle stresses the importance of building a list of potential students before selling the course in todays interview. This is a critical step because you cant have a successful class without students.

Advice Needed To Start Baking Classes

I have been getting request from a lot of people to teach baking, an am now thinking on these terms seriously, hence I would like some advice on how to go about this. I also have a few questions that probably the experts here would be able to answer:

While teaching baking, how many types of cake can u teach in each class

Is decorating the cake taken along with a same class or seperate

also what can be done with the baked cake……..is it given to the students or what …….as I would not like to keep the cake at home after the class.

how much time & how many hours will be the lenght of each class

Is the material used for the baking is at the teachers expense or will the cost be taken from the students……….

Can the cake experts here please advice. Thanks n have a nice day everyone

  • Make sure you have the tools you need to succeed. If your current frosting technique involves scraping buttercream all over a cake with a butter knife, its time to change!
  • Have some patience. It can be tempting to try to frost your cake as soon as it feels a little cool. However, its important to wait until the cake is completely cool.
  • Make your own frosting. For the beginning baker, making frosting or icing from scratch can be a little intimidating. However, have you ever stopped to see whats actually involved in homemade frosting?
  • Have a vision. Before you begin to frost your cake, stop and ask yourself what youd like the finished product to look like. Its easy to get excited and launch into the process without pausing to plan, but if you dont consider your options upfront it might lead to disappointment down the road.

Which Techniques Will I Learn In An Online Cake Decorating Class

Depending on your skill level, cake decorating classes teach myriad techniques. Beginning decorators may learn how to stack cakes, use buttercream and ganache, or create painted or airbrushed cakes, along with cake toppers. More advanced classes teach decorating for themed cakes such as unicorn, wedding, sculpted cakes, and even how to decorate a box explosion cake.

Advantages Of Attending Cake Decorating Classes

There are now many cake decorating classes available for those interested in baking. There are basic classes, advanced classes, business classes, and special courses that focuses on certain specializations.

Here are 7 advantages of attending cake decorating classes.

    1. Develop your cake decorating skills.

Unless you are naturally gifted with the ability to decorate cakes, your only two sources of skill in this aspect are cookbooks and cake decorating classes. And while you can learn the basics of baking cakes from a cookbook, decorating cakes is not that easy to learn. Cake decorating requires special skill that requires hands-on demonstration by an instructor and actual hands-on practice too. This is where these classes come in.

    2. Learn more decorating tips and techniques.

Even if youve mastered the basics of cake decorating, you can still benefit from cake decorating classes. Through classes, you will pick up special tips and learn new techniques you havent tried. You can also venture into areas of specialty that you have not yet explored. For example, if you are already a whiz at decorating birthday cakes, a wedding cake decorating class will help you hone your skills at decorating wedding cakes, which are definitely more intricate. You can also get more special techniques, such as 3D sculpturing, fondant cake decors, air brush painting, string work methods, gum paste art, and so on.

    3. Turn your hobby into a profitable venture.

    5. Get your creative juices flowing.

Teaching Cake Decorating Classes From Home

    Updated 12 Nov 2011 , 12:02amby kakeladi

I’d like to know if anyone has any advice on teaching cake decorating classes. I live in California and I know that you can’t have a home bakery. My idea is to have a small side business as a traveling cake decorating teacher?! Has anyone done this before? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I like doing this. It has been spotty do far, but it is fun. Figuring out what to charge is a tough one. Your local economy kind of dictates what people are willing to pay. I charge by person. If I have to travel very far, then I charge traveling expenses. A web site is a good way to let the world know about your business. The key words you use for web crawlers will make big difference. I like to teach based on what the students have and what they want to learn. Having a teaching outline is great for classes that span over several days or weeks. Teaching a few basics for a one day class seems to work well. Good luck with your plans. Michele

From a legal standpoint in CA you should be OK as long as you are using the customer’s kitchen. We used to offer classes , there is so much prep involved it turned out to be more profitable making cakes. But if you don’t have commercial space it could be a viable option.

These are all really great suggestions… thank you so much! I think I’m going to look into all of these options.

I was inspired to make this post because my daughters teacher approached me one day asking if I had any tips on how to make a cake for the first time. It was her Mothers birthday and she had never baked or decorated a cake but had her heart on making one.

Of course, I had tons of links to send her, recipes, videos and more and I could tell she looked a little overwhelmed. It then occurred to me at that moment that I had never made a video showing someone who had never made a cake, how to make one from start to finish.

Which is really ironic because I myself not that long ago picked up my first box mix and can of lemon frosting to make my first cake and I had no idea what I was doing. I remember having a lot of questions about the process but at the time, no one to ask.

Why was the cake so soft and why is it cracking?

Why wont this frosting stick to the side of the cake?

Is it supposed to taste like this?

So here is my complete guide on how to make a cake for the very first time from start to finish! Even if youve never made a cake before, this will clear it all up for you. I recommend you read through this entire post first before you start baking so you can be sure to have all your tools and ingredients ready to go. I prefer to bake the day before I need the cake so I have time to let the cake rest and chill.

    Wrapping And Chilling Your Cakes

Learn Cake Decorating Using the Wilton Method

Once your cakes are cool enough to handle, wrap them in two layers of plastic wrap and place into the freezer to chill for two hours or you can place them into the fridge to chill overnight. This is what I like to do so that I am not rushed to decorate. Do not freeze your cakes solid if you plan on using them the same day or it will just take a really long time to defrost them.

If you do freeze your cakes, place them on the counter still wrapped until they are defrosted.

Chilling your cakes is super important so that you can trim them and handle them without them breaking. The chilling causes the butter inside the cake to get nice and hard but will get soft again when the cake comes to room temperature.

    Stacking And Filling Your Cake

Time to start stacking our cake! Start by placing your cake board onto the turntable and center it. Place a small dollop of buttercream on the board and put your first cake layer on the board. There should be a little space all the way around your cake between the cake and the board.

Place a big dollop of buttercream on top of the layer and use your offset spatula to push the buttercream to the edges of the cake. Then hold the spatula at a 45ยบ angle, with the tip in the center of the buttercream and turn the cake slowly to flatten out the buttercream. Keep your spatula level so that the layer of buttercream is level.

I will periodically get down to eye level with the buttercream to check and see if its got a dome in the center or if it is nice and flat. A flat cake is a stable cake.

Optional: Fill Your Cake With Strawberry Puree and Strawberry Buttercream

If you want to spice up your filling, you can easily add some flavoring to your buttercream like a strawberry puree. You can fill your cake with straight strawberry but you need a very thin layer or your cake layers will slip around too easily. You can use my strawberry puree recipe but when you use fresh fruit, it always has to be refrigerated which can make the cake taste dry because the butter in the cake is cold.

I like to use this shelf stable strawberry filling that a lot of bakeries use. You can mix a little into your buttercream and make it flavored or you can spread a little straight onto your cake layers.
