I can never think of butter without remembering one of my mothers memories about butter. It was a story we heard multiple times and yet, we enjoyed every single one of them. It was during World War II and my mother lived in a project. She remembers getting rations during the war and one of the things that were in scarce supply was butter.

She told us that it used to come as white butter with a little packet of yellow dye. To make your butter yellow, you took the packet and mixed it into the butter.

Well, one time her older brother decided to have some fun with their butter.

Along with the yellow packet of coloring that came with the butter, he had an idea. He decided it would be funny to add a few drops of blue coloring to the butter.

And you know what happens when you mix yellow and blue you get green. All of their butter supply had a lovely green color.

Their mother was furious because they wouldnt be getting any more butter any time soon. They had to use what they had and so they had to spread green butter on everything. And cook with green butter.

Funny story, ha? Well, my grandma didnt think so But you know how young boys are.

Back to the point. Butter, as a cooking condiment, has been appreciated by humans for a long time and there are multiple reasons why.

Since moving to St. Louis the first time about 9 years ago, I have been a HUGE fan of Gooey Butter Cake. This stuff is everywhere around here, and it is easy to see why it is amazing! You can make or buy just about any flavor you can imagine of this gooey creation, and lemon is probably one of my favorites. How To Make Ooey Gooey Butter Cake

Make sure you prepare your pan correctly. I use GOOP and think its far superior to any product you can buy at the store. If you dont want to make GOOP, grease your pan then line with parchment paper.

Use room temperature ingredients. Set your butter and cream cheese out a couple hours before you plan on making this amazing cake. You will not regret it!

Dont undermix ingredients. Whip the cream cheese until it is light and fluffy, at least 3 minutes.

Did you know the magic version of this recipe? You simply mix all the ingredients in one bowl and then bake. There is no layer separation, but the flavor and texture are still amazing!

  • Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan really well on all sides.
  • Mix the base cake layer: In a large bowl mix the yellow cake mix with eggs and butter. Press this into the prepared pan, use your hands or a spatula to spread it over the entire surface.
  • Mix the cheesecake layer: In another bowl, mix together the cream cheese, eggs, vanilla, butter, salt until smooth. Slowly mix in the powdered sugar. Pour over the cake layer in the pan.

    Apple Gooey Butter Cake is a one of a kind dessert that is rich, creamy and sinfully delicious. It is the perfect dessert recipe for fall and Thanksgiving. Easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser!

    I’m going to preface this post by confessing two things.

  • This recipe is unique to my blog because the crust is not 100% homemade. Don’t hate me! I have good reasons.
  • I truly, truly despise the word ‘gooey’ and typing out that word all over this post makes me extremely uncomfortable.
  • So then, why am I posting this recipe??

    This dessert is THAT GOOD.

    It’s so good that I could honestly care less that it’s called gooey whatever, with a semi-homemade crust. This dessert is out of bounds, delicious, sinful, blissful, naughty, all of the above.

    You will have a very, very hard time stopping at one piece!

    If you haven’t had some version of Gooey Butter Cake yet, you are missing out! I know during fall time, pumpkin is an extremely popular flavor for this dessert.

    Today I bring you an apple version that is the perfect way to welcome the fall season!

    Also known as the Ooey Gooey Cake, this is a recipe that dates from the 1930s. According to legend, it was created by a German-American baker who inadvertently switched the proportions of butter and flour, ending up with a cake that was very dense yet gooey.

    Not wanting to be wasteful this was during the Great Depression after all his bakery decided to offer it for sale in order to see what would happen. People of course loved it and it quickly became a best-seller, giving us the legendary St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake.

    And from what Ive read, the original recipe actually had some yeast in it. It was like a yeasted crust with a gooey top, but most people nowadays make it using store-bought cake mix and cream cheese, so thats what Im going to use today.

    Flat and dense with two distinct layers, it is typically served as a coffee cake rather than a dessert. Dusted with powdered sugar, you get a deliciously sweet and rich, somewhat firm but gooey cake that you can cut into squares similar to a brownie.

    While I definitely aim to keep all of my recipes 100% from scratch, I just couldn’t skip the cake mix here. It’s part of the flavor experience of gooey butter cake!

    You can definitely venture out, making your own crust with flour and baking powder etc. It wouldn’t take much to grab a recipe and I have no doubt it would be tasty. But, there’s something about the box mix it wouldn’t be the same without it!

    Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is super moist and delicious. I love that a basic cake mix is used and more dairy products are added to give the cake more creaminess and richness. This cake is sure to turn out great if you use real dairy products. Be sure not to use margarine in a caked named Butter Cake!

    Another similar recipe with a box of cake mix and cream cheese is our Cheesecake Cookie Bars. These bars have an extra layer with some crumble on top. Both of these recipes are super easy and only a few minutes to mix up but have a unique flavor.

    Our start with a chocolate cake mix and swirl in cream cheese and chocolate chips. So easy and so delicious!

    The extra dairy products take a bit longer to set-up during the baking process. I use a toothpick to determine doneness. See that hole in the center of the cake? Thats where I inserted the toothpick and when it came out clean I knew the cake was done baking.

    Know that when a toothpick is used it will leave a fairly obvious hole. The good news is that when the cake is cut into it wont last for long!

    This cake was set out for a bit at a party and it was still ooey, gooey, moist and delicious!
