Getting Cake To Stay On Turntable

ok, so I bought a turntable and it makes frosting the cake soooooo much easier, that is until I made a few tiered cakes and had a cake board under each tier when I frosted it. Well, the cakes moved all around and I had a VERY hard time getting them to stay still while I spun it to frost the sides. I put some dabs of BC underneath and each time it moved I tried more and more but it never really stuck, what should I try next time?

We use funtack – that silly puddy like stuff from an office supply store. Works great and can be reused over and over!

you put it between the cake board and the turntable I’m assuming, and how much? little dabs or big globs?

I cut a piece of the non-skid shelf lining to fit the turntable. It works great. The cake doesn’t move.

in the self liner dept at wal-mart, etc. there’s a mesh no-slip product ….buy a roll and then cut piece to fit on top of turntable.I also cut a piece to fit between turntable base and counter so whole thing stays put on slick counter…and it makes a great thing to put under cake being delivered…prevents sliding on the carpet in the vehicle

So This Is How You Decorate A Cake Like A Pro

Mel BurkefrostingBaking with BlondiecakesCake Confidencebeginning bakerOn the top of a turntable fitted with a non-slip mat, place a small layer of tape on a cardboard round the next size up from the size of cake youre decorating. So a 6-inch taped to an 8-inch, or an 8-inch taped to a 10-inch, and so on.Place a cardboard cake round the same size as your cake in the center of the larger cardboard round and press firmly to stick.Add on a touch of buttercream in the center of the smaller cardboard cake round to act as glue for the bottom cake round. Using an offset icing spatula, spread out the buttercream in a nice even layer. Place the first cake round in the center of the small cardboard round. Make sure theres even spacing from all the edges. Pipe on an even layer of buttercream. Spread the buttercream evenly with the offset icing spatula.Place the next cake layer on top. Look at the cake at eye level to make sure its straight.If you are planning on adding a filling, spread a thin layer of buttercream on the cake round. Next, pipe a dam around the outside rim of the cake layer. This will keep the soft filling inside without leaking.Add about 1/2 cup of filling to your cake. Be sure to have a strong dam around it, and go easy. Add the top cake layer. Look at it again at eye level to make sure everything is straight.Fill in the middle layer areas with more buttercream. Add a layer of buttercream to the top of the cake using an offset icing spatula.

    Cake Decorating Without Tools And A Turntable Hack

    If you dont have cake decorating tools or youre away from home, dont let that stop you from making a pretty cake! In this tutorial I share how to decorate a cake with no special tools and a hack to create a makeshift turntable. If you prefer to watch a video of this tutorial, scroll to the bottom of the page.

    For my cake Im using my Perfect Chocolate Cake batter, dividing it equally between three 8 pans. After baking and cooling the cake layers, chill them in the fridge for an hour or in the freezer for 30 minutes. Cold cake layers are much easier to work with because theyre firmer and less crumbly.

    You can leave the cake layers in the fridge overnight if you dont have time to bake and decorate the cake on the same day. To prevent the cake layers from drying out, wrap them in cling film or saran wrap before putting them in the fridge.

    While the cake layers are chilling, make your filling and frosting. Im using my Best Chocolate Buttercream for this cake for both the filling and frosting but you can use whatever you like. Ganache, meringue buttercreams or even whipped cream will work for the frosting.

    Attach the first one to a plate or platter using a dollop of buttercream spread onto the middle of the plate. This will act as glue to secure the cake so it doesnt slide around when you frost it.
