Dog Birthday Cake With Tuna

I wanted to make Larkin a layered, cupcake-sized birthday cake, so cut out one circle with a diameter of 7 centimetres and another of 5 centimetres. I cut the remaining cake into treats and popped them in the freezer for another time.

Then it was time to get frosting.

One of the great things about making dog birthday cakes is that the recipients really dont care if, like me, youre rubbish at icing .

I say icing but theres no sugar here. Just little cubes of potato boiled until very soft , drained very well then mashed.

I beat in a small amount of plain yogurt which helps to give a nice texture. If you dont have yogurt or your dog cant tolerate it then a little water will do.

Then its just a case of spreading the potato over the larger circle, popping the smaller one on top and covering that too.

You can leave it at that if you like, but I decided to dust off my icing bag and add a few flourishes. Not great I know, but whos going to care? Not greedy little Larkin thats for sure!

Finally, I decorated the cake with dog biscuits and treats. Some I left whole, others I crushed as a sort of doggie-friendly sprinkle.

I think it ended up looking pretty good. Not bad for a terrible cake decorator anyway!

Is Dog Cake Good For Dogs

How Much Cake Can My Dog Have

A dog portion of cake is much smaller than a human portion. Most people will want to give cake as a one off special treat, so weve worked out some easy suggested portion sizes for your dog.

A treat portion should be around 30kcal for a dog who weighs less than 10kg, and around 60kcal for a dog who weighs more than 10kg. We recommend this is the maximum amount that should be given daily, though of course none of us should be eating cake every day! To compare that to human cupcakes , your dogs portion of cake could need to be six times smaller than yours!

When youre giving your dog snacks or treats, remember to reduce the amount of food they get that day in their meals to make up for the extra calories, in the same way that we might have a smaller breakfast if we know were having a big meal at lunchtime. If youre giving your dog the above amount of calories in a snack, for an average, healthy dog wed recommend reducing their daily amount of food by about 10%.

Another thing to remember when thinking about making a cake for your dog is that they shouldnt eat a whole cake or batch in one go . Why not think about making small cupcakes that you can freeze in portion sizes and use them spread out at different times over a couple of months as a special treat?

Who can blame him?? The whole point of creating this cake was to make it look like a real birthday cake piled high with fluffy buttercream frosting but with dog friendly ingredients.

So it tastes nothing like what it looks like its a total spin out!!

OK OK I know youre busting to know how I made the cake look so real so I wont keep you in suspense any longer! Heres the rundown:

Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat

Admit it: you know precisely what you should eat in order to be healthy, but you still find yourself elbow-deep in a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos, scratching your head and wondering how you got there in the first place. After just one more chip, you could come to the conclusion that youve had enough of junk food for good. There is a good chance that you have gone through this process several times, eating quite healthfully at times and eating more junk than you would want to admit at other times. The reality of the matter is that you have a choice in what you put into your body. You have complete control over what, when, and where you consume.Your dog, on the other hand, is unable to make this decision for himself.

    • You, as the dogs owner, are completely responsible for the health and well-being of your pet dog.
    • This implies that, in addition to providing him with a nutritious and balanced food, you must ensure that he is not consuming any harmful substances.
    • A nutritious meal for humans may appear to be a good treat for our dogs at times, and this is understandable.
    • However, there are many harmful human foods available, and it is our responsibility to ensure that our beloved dogs do not come into contact with them.
    • Listed below is a list of ten items that your dog should absolutely never eat:

    Ingredient Apple Dog Cake

What dog doesnt love a bite of apple? Theyre sweet, crunchy, and every pup weve ever met seems to enjoy them.

This cake is another four-ingredient wonder and is single-serving as well. So even if your doggo is on the small side, they can still enjoy a treat made just for them without leftovers to worry about storing.

You will need some special equipment for this one. It bakes in either a 4-inch cake pan or a jumbo muffin tin.

How Much Birthday Cake Can My Dog Eat

There are really two questions here. First how much should you feed your dog based on their weight? And second, should you put the entire cake in front of them?

For our 22 pound dog, Fritz, we fed him ¼ of the cake in place of his dinner. Fritz absolutely loves this cake!

For safety, you need to decide if you can put the entire birthday cake in front of your dog. Yes, it makes for super cute pictures but if your dog has ever shown any type of resource guarding or food aggression it is best to serve only what you are comfortable with your dog eating at one time.

And if your dog loves fish, theyll go barking mad for this tuna-packed cupcake.

Even though it wasnt large and contained wholesome ingredients, I still fed the cake to Larkin in several portions over a couple of days.

I like to keep him trim and, anyway, wanted him to enjoy it rather than scarf it all straight down. In between feeds, I stored the cake, covered, in the fridge.

If you want to make a larger cake, simply multiply everything up. Youll need a larger container for microwaving the batter and should adjust the cooking time accordingly.

    Dog Birthday Cake Frosting

For the dog frosting, we learned that dogs should not eat sugar, not much butter, and stay away from cream cheese and chocolate. So our healthy cream cheese frosting wont be a good fit for the dog cake.

Instead, steam cauliflower and potatoes. Then, add them to a food processor along with milk and plain unsweetened yogurt. Add a dollop of butter, but you can skip it if you like.

Blend until the ingredients come together into a smooth puree. Its better to start with less milk and add it gradually to prevent the dog cake frosting from becoming too wet or runny.
