How Many Does A 6 Inch Cake Serve

Number 3 Cake Without a Mold | Marisha’s Couture Cakes

The majority of my 6 inch cake recipes make a single layer cake, which makes 4-6 slices of cake. See the beautiful ombre cake below to see 6 small slices of cake. A few of the recipes make a double layer cake, because theyre more festive, like my red velvet cake and vegan vanilla birthday cake. Those cakes serve 6-8 people because the slices are thicker.

The frostings on these cakes range from standard American buttercream , to freshly whipped cream on my mini lemon layer cake and mini tres leches cake. Ive also used a pourable chocolate ganache on my mini chocolate cake for two, and an unusual broiled sweet oatmeal topping on my oatmeal cake recipe.

Baking Pans By Volume

Its often important to know the capacity in volume of a baking pan, so you can know if a recipe you are making will fit into it for cooking, or not. In planning, you also have to allow for spare volume, so the ingredients dont rise or spill over the edge during cooking.

Some, but not all, baking pans will list their capacity in volume on their undersides. If they dont, to know how much volume your baking pans hold, use a measuring cup and pour water in

Or if youre lucky, itll be one of the ones listed in this table below.

This is a chart comparing volume of baking pans to their typical, manufactured dimensions.

How Long Do You Bake A Cake At 350

Bake at 350 degrees? Pan Size ~ The general rule of thumb when baking is the bigger the pan, the lower the temperature. You bake a chocolate 9 round cake for about 30-35 minutes at 350 F. But, if you were putting the same recipe in a 14 pan you need to lower the temperature to 325 F for 50-55 minutes.

How to Make a Wedding Cake: Baking and Frosting (Part 1) from Cookies Cupcakes and Cardio

Once youve scaled down your ingredients, you can make the cake exactly to the recipes specificationsexcept when it comes to baking time. For that, youll need to play it by ear. Keep the listed baking temp from the recipe the same, but dont wander far from the kitchen. Start conservatively. If a recipe calls for a 25-minute bake time for a 9-inch cake, start with 10 minutes for a 6-inch cake, rotate the cake in the oven , then give it another five minutes. Or, if you think its close, give it only another three minutes. Doneness is measured either when a cake tester comes out clean, or when the surface has a light spring when touched. Keep testing the cake until its done.

Cupcake Batter = 3 Layer 6 Inch Cake

Cupcake batter that produces about 12-15 cupcakes is the perfect amount for a 3 layer 6 inch cake. One dozen cupcakes usually takes about 3-4 cups of cake batter, which divides perfectly between 3 6 inch cake layers. This means that you can essentially turn any batch of cupcakes into a small layer cake. Ive tested this several times with many different flavors, but usually stick with vanilla cake and chocolate cake, which are made from my vanilla cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes respectively.

How To Prep Your 6 Inch Cake Pans

After you choose your 6 inch cake batter, its time to start prepping the cake pans. First, make sure you have quality 6 inch cake pans. I started using Fat Daddios 6 inch cake pans last year and loved them so much that I switched out my 9-inch and 8-inch cake pans for the Fat Daddios brand. From one baker to another these pans are incredible quality for the price. Not working with this brand, just a genuine fan.

The smaller the cake, the more difficult it is to neatly release from the baking pan. Heres my guaranteed solution so that your 6 inch cake layers glide right out:

  • Make a parchment paper round. Trace the bottom of the cake pans on a large piece of parchment paper. Cut out the parchment circles.
  • Very lightly grease the baking pans.
  • Place the parchment round inside.
  • Grease the parchment round too. Using butter or bakers nonstick spray, I grease the pan AND the parchment. This promises an ultra non-stick environment for your cake. Never any sticking.
  • I usually keep a stack of parchment rounds on hand just in case Im in a rush to get a cake in the oven. For cake emergencies, of course.

Divide the batter evenly between the cake pans and bake.

Cake Math Step : Convert The Measurements

Now that we have the area of the pans, its easiest to work in percentages. Divide the smaller pan area by the larger pan areato calculate your percentage. For example: 29 in2 divided by 51 square inches = 57%. So a 6-inch pan is 57% of an 8-inch pans area.

Next, we use these percentages to convert the ingredient measurements. Multiply the original larger recipe measurement by the percentage to find the measurement of each ingredient for your smaller cake. Write down your resultsdont do this in your head as you go!

Its best to do your conversions in grams. So, if an 8-inch cake requires 500 grams of flour, multiply that by .57 or 57% to find the measurement for the 6-inch recipe. 500 x .57 = 285 grams of flour.

When youre converting measurements, youll need to do some slight approximations, but dont get too nervous about that. Round to the closest gram, up or down, except in the case of leavenersI always round up on the leavener, because Id rather have a little extra lift in the cake than not enough. You can just round to the nearest egg, too. If you want to get super-technical on the eggs, whisk an egg until homogenous and weigh out what you need. Save the rest for an egg wash . When youre dealing in measurements as small as a tenth of a gram, again, dont stress. Whichever way you round, your cake will be totally fine!

As an example, lets convert Shirley O. Corrihers Deep, Dark Chocolate Cake from a 9-inch cake to a 6-inch cake.

Adapting Recipes To Fit Certain Cake Pans

6 Inch x 3 Inch High Round Cake Pan

Adapting recipes to fit the cake pans you have can often be complicated. While its always best to stick to the written recipe, sometimes you need to make adjustments and thats where a little math can help.

    1) Determine the volume your pan can hold. You can also determine the actual surface area of the pan in square inches. I actually used Food 52s article by Alice Medrich on this subject to brush up on my math!

    • For square and rectangle pans, multiply the length of the sides. For example, a 9×13 inch baking pan is 117 square inches. 9×13 = 117.
    • For circle pans, determine the area by multiplying the radius squared by . For example, the area of a 9-inch round pan is 63. The radius is 4.5. 4.5×4.5 = 20.25. Multiply that by 3.14 = 63.5.

    2) After you determine the volume your pan can hold or its square inches, you can confidently make baking pan substitutions.

    • For example, if a 9×13 inch pan is 117 square inches and a 9-inch round pan is 63.5 square inches, you can be confident that the volume from one 9×13 inch pan can fit into TWO 9-inch round pans .

What if volumes and square inches dont match up perfectly? Youll have to adjust the recipe and this requires more math.

The get this percentage, work with the cups or square inches. Subtract the number you have from the number you want . Divide that by what you have , then multiply by 100. This equals 25%.

    Taller Or Shorter Cakes

Baking Cake in Deep Pans | Two Minute Tips & Tricks | Global Sugar Art

Cakes that measure 3 to 6 inches high, baked in the same size pan, would yield the same number of servings because they follow the same pattern of cutting. For example, a 6 in. round cake that measured 6 inches high would yield the same amount as a 6 in. round cake that measured 3 inches high, since theyre both cut the same way.

Cakes that are shorter than 3 inches would yield half the number of servings indicated for that pan.

How To Frost & Decorate A 6 Inch Cake

You need about 2.5-3 cups of frosting to frost a 3 layer 6 inch cake. The frostings paired with the cupcake recipes listed above are plenty for your 6 inch cake, such as vanilla buttercream or chocolate buttercream. Assembling and decorating a 6 inch cake is just like putting together a larger cake, but the smaller size is definitely easier to work with.

    Tools I find helpful:

  • Cake Turntable: This size is great for larger 9 inch cakes as well. A cake turntable makes it easy to frost the sides of a cake with a bench scraper.
  • Bench Scraper: I like to run a bench scraper around the sides of the cake to smooth out the frosting. This works for any size cake. If youve never used one before to decorate a cake, you can watch me use it in my vanilla cake video. Theyre very handy!
  • Small Offset Icing Spatula: Use this for spreading the frosting between the layers and on top of the cake. The small size is great for frosting cupcakes too.
  • Since this is a small cake, its easy to pick up with a couple flat spatulas and carefully transfer to a cake stand or serving plate. You can also use cake boards, which are cardboard cut-outs that provide a sturdy foundation for your cake if you need to move it to another surface.

Small cakes are taking over! Which flavor will you try first?
