Such good carrot cake, hits all the right spots. Pretty dense as far as carrot cake goes in my opinion, but that also might be due to the added nuts and raisins . $4.75 a slice . They also have chocolate cake and other options, but if it’s your first time, definitely go for their signature!
I love that this is a local place and has such popularity! The owner sadly passed away recently but her legacy carries on. While I’m not super into carrot cake, I did enjoy this one. Friends brought it over for a party and I just love the history of this place. It’s a neighborhood staple.
I’ve been hearing about Lloyd’s for years from my kids’ cross country coach. Everytime they run at Van Cortland Park he talks about it. I finally got there today and got him one since it was his birthday. His face made standing in line on the sidewalk and the $15.50 price for a 6″ carrot cake worth it. Betty Campbell-Adams has never made it to China, Nigeria or the Philippines but her carrot cakes have.
From her storefront bakery in the Bronx, the dense, moist cakes have boarded planes bound for far-flung parts of the world, lugged by faithful customers who swear by them and want their family and friends to do so as well. Every couple of weeks, Ms. Campbell-Adams, who has traveled as far as Greece, hears about another journey. There have been too many to count.
Im going to hang up a map and put a pin in everywhere that someone tells me theyre going with my cake, Ms. Campbell-Adams, 60, said as the sweet scent of sugar, cinnamon and baking carrots wafted through the air.
Lloyds Marks 30 Years Of Carrot Cake
Its easy to tell when you are close to Lloyds Carrot Cake. The decadent smell of the shops famous treats has served as a siren for the northwest Bronx, drawing patrons to the iconic 6087 Broadway storefront since 1986.
People walk in and go, Oh, it smells so good in here. You know how many times Ive heard that? said Betty Campbell-Adams, the owner of Lloyds Carrot Cake. I say Im going to change the name to Oh, It Smells So Good in Here.
This is a landmark year for Ms. Campbell-Adams. As it celebrates its 30th anniversary, the establishment is getting ready to open a juice bar next door. The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, April 9.
With planning, design and recipes on her plate, Ms. Campbell-Adams recently found the time to reflect on the tastes, fragrances and memories of the past 30 years.
What comes to mind is our humble beginnings, she said.
Before Ms. Campbell-Adams and her late husband Lloyd Adams opened their iconic storefront in Riverdale, the couple spent evenings in a basement apartment in East Harlem with a pizza oven baking homemade cakes for wholesale distribution. By day, Ms. Campbell-Adams worked as the director of marketing for Time Warner Cable. Mr. Adams was a social worker who started his days delivering cakes to restaurants, coffee shops and other clients. Business boomed and Mr. Adams quit his day job to focus on the cakes.

A Carrot Cake And Its Fans
The simple ingredients used at Lloyds Carrot Cake in the Bronx have drawn quite a following, and won more than a few converts, locally and internationally.
Ms. Campbell-Adams or the carrot cake lady, as she is known to many of her fans is the owner of Lloyds Carrot Cake, a family business that churns out about 1,000 cakes and dozens of cupcakes and muffins every week, all from a tiny kitchen just across from Van Cortlandt Park in the Riverdale neighborhood. Look for the light-up sign with the dancing carrot.
Carrot cakes are not the only items on the menu, though two of the eight cakes to choose from are carrot, one with raisins and nuts and one without, both smothered in cream-cheese frosting. Also popular are the red velvet, German chocolate and pineapple coconut cakes. Prices start at $2.75 for a single slice of plain carrot cake and go up to $24 for an entire fully loaded carrot cake with nuts and raisins. The most expensive item is the 10-inch red velvet cake, for $35.
Lines can wind down the block, with a three-hour wait last Thanksgiving. The regulars include neighborhood residents and students and staff from nearby private schools. At Riverdale Country School, which often orders from Lloyds, the small carrot cupcakes are a favorite in the cafeteria for the middle and upper schools.
Im thinking were going to get married and have a family and were going to be struggling, Ms. Campbell-Adams recalled.
