How Do You Attach Things To A Diaper Cake

How to Make a Diaper Cake | Step By Step Tutorial

It depends on what you exactly you are attaching but here are some of my favorite tools:

  • glue dots
  • wooden skewers or popsicle sticks
  • hot glue
  • paperclips

Obviously you dont want to glue anything to the diapers if you want the parents-to-be to be able to use them. Instead, wrap a ribbon around the object and adhere it to the ribbon around the tiers or a popsicle stick you can insert into a diaper.

How To Make A Cloth Diaper Cake

Materials Needed:

  • Roughly a dozen small safety pins
  • One Snappi diaper fastener, or additional safety pins
  • A receiving blanket or crib sheet
  • 1 baby shampoo or lotion bottle that is fairly tall
  • A cake platter

Instructions to Make a 2-Tier Cloth Diaper Cake

We used unwashed Bummis prefold diapers in this tutorial. If the mom-to-be plans to use another style of cloth diapers such as pockets or all-in-twos, you can also use cloth diaper inserts for a very similar look.

If you prefer to pre-wash the diapers before you make your diaper cake, keep in mind that they will fluff up more after several washings. Prewashing shouldn’t impact the construction techniques below – but your cake will definitely be puffier! Some diaper cakes are assembled using 2-sided tape, but this could be hard to remove from cloth diapers, especially if the cake is left assembled for a few weeks or more, so I prefer elastic bands.

Set aside 4 diapers which will be used to wrap the cake layers. One by one, fold 14 of the prefolds into thirds on the seam lines. Roll these diapers up

and secure each with an elastic band.

To assemble the top tier of your cake, group 4 of the rolls together and secure them with another elastic band. Next, take one of the diapers that was set aside. Fold this diaper in thirds on the seam lines, wrap it tightly around the 4 rolled up diapers, and secure with another elastic band. Your top tier should look something like the one below.

One of my most favourite baby shower gifts was a beautifully handmade diaper cake from my husband’s aunt. Not only was it practical – a mama can never have too many diapers! – but it was also thoughtful and made with love. It was actually one of the things that inspired me to start this blog! Today I’m partnering with Pampers to share with you how to make a beautiful, rustic looking diaper cake gift for the next baby shower you attend. My method doesn’t involve any diaper rolling, and I’ve added a unique topper that I think takes this gift to an adorable level.

Take it from a mama of three girls – a mom can only have so many frilly outfits and blankets for her baby, but she can never have too many diapers! I always appreciated getting diapers as baby gifts when my girls were newly born, and now that three of my good friends have had babies this month, I’m excited to gift them some diapers, too.

For this DIY gift, I’m using Pampers. We used these on my girls, and just the scent and softness of Pampers gets me all teary and brings me back to when my babies were just little. Pampers is the 1st choice of moms in Canada, and Pampers cares for every baby’s happy and healthy development. You can find a whole range of diapers, wipes and training pants from Pampers to provide comfort and protection for all the stages of baby’s little life.

Most people might assume that newborn diapers, known commonly as size N diapers, or size 1 diapers for babies up to 14 lbs. are the ones to use for a diaper cake. And while its true that a parent will definitely start out using size N and size 1 diapers for their baby, theyll likely already have a surplus of that size.

When most people go to shop for supplies, theyll naturally gravitate to the smallest sizes, not realizing that everyone else has the same idea. This leaves a mom or dad with fewer diapers for their baby to grow into.

Its smart to opt for larger-sized diapers that the baby will be able to fit into in a few months. Size 2 is a great choice as its for 3-8 months, not only will this ensure that a parent will be well-equipped, they also wont have to immediately dismantle the cake and can instead use it as a decoration for the babys nursery for those first couple of months.

As for designs, you can either choose plain diapers and use ribbons and strings to spruce them up or you can take advantage of the plethora of designs diapers come in today. These days, you can find diapers printed with everything from stars to flowers to dinosaurs. If you opt for printed diapers, be sure to keep the baby showers theme in mind, so the diaper cake doesnt clash with it.

What if the parents are choosing cloth diapers?

Middle Layer Diaper Baby Cake ~ Approximately 50 Diapers

  • Roll Diapers and secure with small rubber band. I like to use small hair rubber bands. They work perfectly.
  • To Roll Diapers start at the open end and roll to the bottom of the diaper. It will give you a nice clean roll.
  • Once all diapers are rolled take 9-12 and put a large Rubber Band around. Then begin tucking rolled diapers creating a larger circle until all diapers are used and packed tightly.
  • Choose ribbon and measure around cake. Cut Ribbon 1 in larger than cake circumference. I used a single wide ribbon for the middle layer.
  • Wrap ribbon around cake and use a Glue Gun to secure closure in front. Make sure ribbon is pulled tight.
  • Add Embellishment to cake front and secure using glue gun
  • Optional ~ This is a perfect place to roll up wash cloths and tuck in cake or small bottles of lotion, or even tiny baby socks. Its a fun surprise for the Baby Mama to find!

So Here Is The List Of Materials For A Diaper Cake:

  • Diapers : if youre making a three-tiered cake, youll need about 38 total diapers. That is 23 on the bottom, 9 in the middle and 6 on the top.
  • Rubber bands Youll need one rubber band per diaper. If youre making a three-tiered cake, with 38 diapers, youll need 38 bands. Make sure you always get more though, because these tend to snap!
  • Rubber bands 4 for a three-tiered cake.
  • Tall slim object that will be placed in the center of the cake. You can even use a bottle of baby wash, oil or shampoo, or something else you prefer. It needs to be as tall as your cake, as well as of enough weight to stand on its own.
  • Tiny baby objects such as booties, washcloths, stuffed animals, pins, or decor to embellish your cake.
  • Cardboard circle or cake stand This will be used as a base to build your cake.

And 38 diapers, how much does it cost exactly ?

How Many Diapers Do I Need To Make A Diaper Cake

How to make a Diaper Cake

The number of diapers you will need to make a diaper cake depends on how big youd like your finished cake to be and how many layers you plan to make. More diapers equals a bigger cake. However, heres a diaper cake sizing guide that will help you estimate how many diapers to buy.

The bottom tier of the diaper cakes I make are approximately 12-14 inches in diameter. Heres how many diapers I used:

The size of your finished diaper cake will also be slightly affected by the size of diapers you use. I used size 4 diapers for all of the diaper cakes shown in this post. If you use newborn or size 1 diapers, you may need to add one or two extra diapers to each round to make up the slight size difference.

Make Bottom Tier Of Diapers

Now the baby diaper cake making begins! Start combining the diaper together in a large round tier . For the bottom tier, I first made the middle section of the circle by putting together groups of three diapers rubber banded and then started making a large circle by pushing them all together.

I put one of the largest rubber bands around the grouping and continued just adding in individual rolled up diapers until it was a good size. I used approximately 48 diapers on the bottom tier.
