Its impossible to miss the bright red packaging of a Friendlys ice cream cake in the supermarket. This ice cream brand has a rich history to it, being created by two brothers at the peak of the Great Depression, and according to the brands website, was the first ice cream sold by a half-gallon ice cream package, so that customers could bring it home. However, though Friendlys has an inspiring history, its Premium Ice Cream Cakes arent as inspiring to taste. These cakes are easy to find in stores, and are branded as having a layer of chocolate ice cream, a layer of vanilla ice cream, and a crunchy layer of something that seems like a crumbled cookie or cake in between.
Friendlys cake has a small frosting exterior, which is a plus if you prefer Ice cream over frosting. However, the crumbled cookie-cake layer, while branded as being decently sized, was almost absent from the cake itself, resulting in just two large layers of chocolate and vanilla ice cream covered by a thin layer of frosting. Target reviews also back up this claim, with some customers having the same problem that we found. If this is what we had wanted, then we would have just made ourselves a chocolate and vanilla ice cream sundae at home.

This cookie ice cream cake starts with a base of vanilla soft serve, the brand’s signature “fudge and crunch center,” and a second layer of Oreo Blizzard ice cream. Slice the cake, starting from the center and cutting in a smooth downward motion toward the outer edge. Use a cake server to lift the first slice from the cake. Continue cutting the cake, cleaning the knife with a cloth between each slice and warming the knife in the hot water bath as needed.

I think everyone can agree that ice cream birthday cake, if anything, is a bunch of delicious words and ideas stuck together. But what seems to be a point of contention is what actually constitutes an ice cream cake. Is it ice cream and cake? Or is it just ice cream you can slice? I want to know.
This exact discussion erupted recently when Tastemade that people had a lot of strong opinions about. This birthday cake doesnt actually contain any cake, and were not mad about it, Tastemade says in the tweet.
In the video, part of Tastemades The Scran Line, pastry gourmand Nick Makrides adds three flavors to separate bowls of condensed milk, whipping cream, and food coloring to make strawberry, boysenberry, and lemon cream.
After folding in rainbow sprinkles, the boysenberry cream is added to a prepared cake tin, leveled with a few taps, and then joined by the strawberry and lemon layers. After freezing the concoction overnight and then adding a finishing touch of whipped cream and chocolate drizzle, the colorful birthday cake is done. Theres only one problem: Folks dont think this counts as cake.
Some of the confusion seems to be that the creamy components look a lot like birthday cake frosting, leading some to believe its a giant pile of frozen frosting .
But more people were just confused. Where is the cake?

Marketside Unicorn Ice Cream Cake
When you see the colors of blue and yellow set together, it’s difficult not to think of a Walmart. Walmart is one of the largest chains of retail department stores around, so it should come as no surprise that you’ll find some ice cream cakes in their frozen desserts section. Under the “Marketside,” label they offer numerous flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and a beautiful pink and blue Unicorn Cake Batter. These ice cream cakes were less expensive than other cakes on this list, being offered at around $15 per round cake.
We didn’t have the same problem with these cakes as we had with the previous ice cream desserts. There was a fair amount of ice cream and cake in this single-layered treat, and a helpful amount of frosting decorating the top. Our favorites of the bunch was the Unicorn cake batter cake, the latter having a nice layer of confetti-vanilla cake on the bottom, a cake batter ice cream center, and a nice thick amount of purple frosting, and lots of sprinkles. The ice cream wasn’t as tasty as other in-store brands you can find, but if you’re a fan of lots of frosting on your desserts, you might enjoy this cake. If not, you might want to pass on this colorful Walmart ice cream cake.
Peanut Butter N’ Chocolate
This ice cream flavor is a classic for a reason. The peanut butter and chocolate combination is a pairing that works in perfect harmony and there is, in fact, a scientific reason why that is the case. According to Mic, the two flavors provide sensory contrast that our taste buds cannot ignore. So it’s no wonder why Baskin-Robbins’ Peanut Butter N’ Chocolate is such a success. This flavor contains chocolate ice cream with a peanut butter swirled ribbon. Can you say “yum”?
The Ben & Jerry’s flavor equivalent is Peanut Butter World, and we’d argue that their version takes the cake over this one because due to the inclusion of chocolate cookie pieces. While Peanut Butter N’ Chocolate is lacking in crunch, this flavor is pretty dang good just the same. We would love to try it topped with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to really seal the deal on the peanut butter and chocolate flavor combo.
