Theyre mostly carbs and have very little protein and fiber to slow the effect of these carbs on your blood sugar.
To blunt their effect on your blood sugar, combine them with protein, such as meat, cheese, hummus, or nut butter, and add fiber to your snack in the form of fruits or veggies .

What Rice Cakes Are Best
The two long standing brands for rice cakes that Im familiar with are Quaker and Lundberg Farms. I do know that many markets have their own brands version as well obviously I havent tried all those.
Our absolute favorite are the Lundberg Farms. Lundberg is a northern California rice grower and they produce great products and are a local brand to me even though theyre a national brand .
The reason I like their rice cakes so much more is that theyre crunchy and taste like puffed rice baked together. Other brands tend to have a weird consistency that reminds ne of packing peanuts. While everyone has their own taste, I also think these ones dont stand up to toppings, which I like to load on

Are Rice Cakes Good Diet Food
Cake may not be the first food you think of on a weight-loss diet, but put the word “rice” in front of it and you have a staple food for many dieters. Rice cakes are light and low in calories, making them seem like a good food for dieting. It isn’t quite as clear-cut as that, however. There are a number of factors you need to consider before deciding to make rice cakes your go-to dieting snack.
Brown Versus White Rice
The table below compares the nutrient contents of 3.6 ounces of cooked white and brown rice .
One study in overweight Korean women showed that a weight loss diet that included either white rice or mixed rice three times per day resulted in weight loss.
The mixed-rice group lost 14.8 pounds over a six-week period, while the white-rice group lost 11.9 pounds .
Therefore, it appears that both types can be included in a weight loss diet.
Nevertheless, brown rice has the advantage of being higher in fiber and nutrients than white rice, making it the healthier choice.
Brown rice has been linked to weight loss and favorable blood fat levels. Most studies have found either no link between white rice and weight change or associated it with weight loss.

Is Rice Fattening Or Weight Loss Friendly
Rice is one of the most widely consumed grains in the world.
White rice is a refined, high-carb food thats had most of its fiber removed. A high intake of refined carbs has been linked to obesity and chronic disease.
However, countries with a high rice intake have low levels of these exact diseases.
So whats the deal with rice? Is it weight loss friendly or fattening? This article gets to the bottom of this question.

Greek Yoghurt And Berries
Putting together calcium rich Greek yoghurt and antioxidant rich berries is a “nutritional match made in heaven”, according to Susie.
She says: “Not only does the yoghurt have minimal sugars compared to many fruit yoghurts but it is also low GI which means it will help to keep blood glucose levels controlled for several hours after eating it.
“When it comes to fruit, any type of berries, fresh or frozen are relatively low in calories and packed full of fibre making them a perfect light snack choice in between meals.”
Benefits Of Rice Cakes
However, the report in Nutrition Today notes that consuming 0.5 to 0.6 grams of rapidly digesting carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight every 30 minutes for two to four hours after exercise can help increase the rate of glycogen synthesis and make sure the muscles are full.
That means that a bodybuilder who weighs 200 pounds may benefit from consuming 45 grams to 54 grams of carbohydrates every 30 minutes for up to four hours, or until the next full meal. That’s where you can reap the benefits of rice cakes.
These increased carbohydrate needs can be difficult to meet, so bodybuilders often need to choose high-carbohydrate foods that don’t have much protein or fat to slow down the digestion of those carbohydrates. A single rice cake provides around 7.5 carbohydrates and only 0.75 grams of protein and 0.25 grams of fat. Rice cakes are also low in calories, with only 35 calories per cake.
Eating six or seven rice cakes every 30 minutes could help a bodybuilder meet those post workout needs without providing an excessive amount of calories. Since the rice cakes contain only 0.4 grams of fiber per cake, they’re also rapidly digested and absorbed, so they can provide a good source of pre-workout energy too.

White Vs Brown Rice Cakes
Most commonly, the primary ingredient in rice cakes is white rice. White rice is brown rice that has been stripped of its germ, bran, and husk to look more appealing and for quicker cooking. This process removes most nutrients and fiber from the rice.
But some rice cake products contain brown rice, which is likely a slightly healthier option if the product carries a Whole-Grains stamp. Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates, fiber, and minerals. However, all rice cakes, including brown rice cakes, remain high on the glycemic index and as described above, most of the nutrient value is lost in the cooking process.

Rice Is A Staple Food In Many Countries
Rice is a staple food for more than half of the worlds population, particularly Asian countries like China, Japan, Korea and India.
These are all countries that, until recently, had relatively low percentages of people who were overweight or obese .
White rice is the predominant source of carbs in those countries. For example, Koreans consume almost 40% of their total calorie intake from rice (
Even so, rice consumption seems to protect against weight gain and high blood pressure in these populations .
In elderly Chinese people, a dietary pattern high in rice and vegetables seems to help prevent weight gain, large waist circumference and obesity .
The same results were found in a study including over 200 overweight Iranians. No association between the frequency of white rice consumption and body mass index or belly fat was found .
However, this trend may be changing, as diets in these countries become influenced by the Western Diet. In fact, the numbers of overweight and obese people have skyrocketed in many of these countries in the past few years .
One study among Iranian adolescents showed that those who had the highest rice intake had the worst diet quality .
This indicates that these adolescents may be consuming rice with foods that older generations did not eat, potentially leading to weight gain.
At this point, it seems that rice intake itself has a neutral effect, while its health effects positive or negative depend on a persons overall diet.
