Can A Stand Mixer Replace A Food Processor
Not really, but sometimes in a pinch. Many foods and even liquids can be mixed in a food processor, but the mixing is done with a blade that breaks the ingredients down while blending them together. A stand mixer mashes the ingredients together to mix them while developing the gluten, aeration, and overall structure of the ingredients. A stand mixer may also keep the integrity of ingredients intact while mixing where a food processor will generally blend everything together to the same consistency.
Food processors are able to slice, grate, and chop ingredients, where a stand mixer will need a food processor attachment to do the same tasks. While some doughs can be mixed in a heavy-duty food processor, most doughs are still best mixed in a stand mixer. If the majority of your kitchen needs revolve around prepping fruits, vegetables, and sauces, you should consider a food processor. If your needs are more baking and mixing-based, you should consider a stand or hand mixer.

Kitchenaid 48l Artisan Stand Mixer
Best stand mixer for baking cake

A classic for a reason A mid-price option
Reasons to avoid:
Its motor is a little lacking compared to other options
We know you recognise this one. From the Great British Bake Off to Nigellas home kitchen, the KitchenAid Artisan is a classic. We put it to the test to see if its still the cream of the crop. The verdict? This stand mixer is stunning and sturdy, but the motor is a little lacking compared to some of the others in our guide. You can make up to two batches of bread at a time in this mixer, so its a good balance between size and capacity. The bowl also screws on easily and has a handle. Attachments are dishwasher-safe, which we love.
We found that the Artisan mixer is both quiet and efficient. Theres also an optional pouring shield to prevent splashes, and it comes with a wire whisk, flat beater and dough hook as default. The classic tilt-head design will fit under your kitchen cabinets, and because theres so many colours to choose from we know it will look the part too.
Its also one of the heaviest stand mixers available, at a knee-bending 11kg with accessories. It did make some delicious cake though, and you can buy plenty of additional attachments to make pasta, ice cream, and even stuff sausages if you so wish.

Is Een Handmixer Goed Om Mee Te Bakken

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
KitchenAid has only a limited one-year warranty on its stand mixers, which isnt long for such a pricey machine. But we think that if you read the manual about maintenance and know the limitations of your mixer, you shouldnt have issues with its longevity. This is a tough machine favored by professional bakers and restaurant chefs. The Artisan is a popular and well-loved item on Amazon, and many reviewers say their machines are still going strong after 10 years or more.
Another complaint weve heard about KitchenAid mixers is that theyre made by Whirlpool now instead of Hobart . But weve found no concrete evidence that this adversely affects performance. KitchenAid representatives promise that the machine is the same as when Hobart made it, still with all-metal gears and housing, and with the same patented design.
Finally, the mixer doesnt have a built-in timer. But given that you can set a timer on your phone, this isnt a huge concern.

Kitchenaid Artisan Mini 35 Quart Tilt
Best KitchenAid stand mixer for classic kitchens
Has the iconic KitchenAid Artisan design Has all the attachments you need
Reasons to avoid:
Its not the most powerful, and still quite pricey
25% lighter and 20% smaller than the Kitchenaid Artisan mixer, the KitchenAid Artisan Mini is great for those who want the charm of a KitchenAid mixer but with a smaller profile. It has a flat beater, wire whisk, and dough hook for all your baking needs, and you can also wash all of these in the dishwasher.
Despite its limited motor size, the KitchenAid Artisan Mini was powerful enough to make smooth and fluffy cake mixes and well-worked cookie dough. When making bread it was able to knead a regular sized loaf, but we did find that the dough worked its way up the hook.
If you enjoy baking but dont need the best stand mixer for batch bakes, the KitchenAid Artisan Mini is a great choice for you. It has a great range of colour options too, and it looks a real treat when placed on the kitchen counter.

Why Do I Need A Stand Mixer
Stand mixers look the part, but they are also essential for taking the muscle work out of even the toughest recipes. Anyone whos spent ten minutes kneading bread dough or hand-beating cake mix will know that its a lot of arm work. Not only will the best stand mixer do it a lot faster, but it will often do a better job thanks to the range of speeds available, as well as the assortment of attachments that are custom made for baking.
You can opt for the iconic mixers from KitchenAid and Kenwood, but our guide also features some options from Cuisinart and Bosch. Theres even a mixer from Morphy Richards, which isnt technically a stand mixer, but really wowed us in testing thanks to its smart and compact design.
Which Kitchenaid Mixer Attachment To Use For Cake Batter
Most KitchenAid mixers come with 4 attachments: A flat beater, a wire whip, dough hook, and a burnished spiral attachment. Deciding which KitchenAid mixer attachment to use for cake batter can sometimes be an exercise in frustration. We are here to show you what some of the top bakers recommend for using attachments when baking cakes.
Dont miss our complete review of ALL KitchenAid Mixer Attachments!
It probably isnt possible to completely ruin a cake if you use the wrong mixer attachment, but choosing the right attachment for cake batter will help guarantee you get the best results with your KitchenAid stand mixer!
We researched some of the top bakers to watch how they use a stand mixer for cake batter people like Duff Goldman from the Food Network for example. Surprisingly, almost all top chefs all recommend using the flat beater for the cake batter. Sometimes the flat beater attachment will also be called a paddle attachment as well.
The flat beater is explicitly designed for mixing without aerating your batter. That said, it is possible to over mix or use too high of a speed with this attachment, and end up aerating even when you didnt want to. So dont over mix cake batter or other recipes like cookie dough, and watch the speed you use.
Some bakers recommend using the whisk attachment for very specific types of cake such as Angel Food, where you actually want a very airy batter mixture.

Richest Cake: Bakers Corner From Aldi
For an ultra-rich, buttery cake, our Test Kitchen recommends Bakers Corner yellow cake mix. This Aldi-exclusive brand produced an exceptionally moist cake with the richest flavor of the eight brands tested. The only drawback is that moisture meant that the cake didnt rise as much as others, which isnt a problem unless youre banking on nice fat layers for an elaborate layer cake.
If You’re Choosing A New Hand Mixer Here’s What To Consider
- Weight: A mixer thats reasonably lightweight means your arm doesnt get tired while mixing.
- Handle: A comfortably shaped handle with a non-slip grip will make the mixer easier to hold. The on/off switch should be easily accessible.
- Non-slip base: A non-slip rubber area on the end of the mixer stops it from sliding on the bench when in standing position.
- Electronic controls: These mean the mixer cant be left switched on and so wont start operating if plugged in.
- A swivelling or rotating cord: This makes the mixer easier to manoeuvre.
- Attachments: These need to be a decent length .
- Pulse option: Pulsing gives a short burst of power that can help remove excess mixture from the beaters.
- Boost or turbo option: This gives an extra level of power when you need high-speed mixing.
- Speeds: Look for at least 5 speeds that are noticeably different.
Tip: Choose a mixer by doing your own testing: check how comfortable it is to hold and whether the controls are easy to use.

*At the time of publishing, the price was $500.
The KitchenAid Pro 600 Series 6-Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer is a formidable appliance if you bake frequently or in large quantities, whether thats hearty batches of bread, dozens of cookies, or large layer cakes. A big mixer with a big footprint, the Pro has a more powerful motor than the Artisan and can breeze through tough tasks. But its also significantly louder than our top pick and heavy enough that its best left permanently on the countertop.
The Pro 600 mixer is a taskmaster designed to tackle big jobs, which, along with the fact that its even more durable than the Artisan, is why its often found in restaurants and test kitchens. The spacious 6-quart bowl is best for tasks like making multiple loaves of breadhelped by the spiral-shaped PowerKnead dough hook, which was better at keeping dough in the bowl rather than pushing it up around the gear and spring. The heavy-duty motor powered through almost all our test batches. However, because the Pros bowl is larger than the Artisans and has a much wider bottom, the whisk couldnt make full contact with a single egg white or whip a ½ cup of cream.
