This cake is so bad, no rum taste a weird chemical aftertaste. All the fruit is on the outside not even mixed in right. Its nothing like it use to be and a embarrassment to any Caribbean island selling it! People buying this must have never made a cake in their lives if they actually like it! Thank God Im Bajan and can make the real thing or Id be crying now, Ive had Irish butter rum cake that tasted 100 times better than this.

The cost of that $8 duty free bottle was $40 when purchased on the island. By the way, you cant fly with 151 proof rum any more, because its over the 70% alcohol limit imposed by the FAA. I first tried this rum on Grand Cayman. It is good on the rocks and better in a mix.Not a sipping rum.It will add a little kick if drizzled over a Tortuga Rum cake.

Nose Im not entirely chased awayits not too shabby. Light and easy, mostly molasses, caramel, toffee, leavened by the light notes of coconut shavings, honey and nougat. Some dark fruit raisins, blackberries, ripe cherries.

Palate Again, light, with some firmness lending it a bit of authority and solid tastes. Nougat, honey and coconut, like those white Ferrer or Raffaello confectioneries my much-loved chocoholic daughter cant get enough of. Theres some sharper fruits here ripe pears, apples, berries as well as a touch of salted caramel and molasses, and brown sugar in a hot latte. Nice.

Finish Warm oily, sweet, smooth. No problem. Honey again, coconut shavings, a raisin or two, but for me to tell you theres more would be reaching.

Thoughts Given my despite for its blandly inoffensive white sibling, I didnt walk in here expecting much. But it wasnt half bad a completely unadventurous and reasonably tasty light sipping rum. Maybe its sold in the right places after all.

Ive noticed over the past few months, as the number of readers of my blog have gone up, so have the number of emails and comments. I really enjoy this. I like hearing that someone enjoyed my review or is going to try a cocktail recipe I wrote about or that they agree that such and such rum is fantastic or even that they disagree with me vehemently . Its great to know that people are reading and enjoying the site, as well as finding it useful.

The most common question I find in my inbox every week though is one that I always feel a bit guilty about when I cant come up with an answer:

OK, maybe the part about the basement is an exaggeration of sortsbut the gist of the message is still true to the most common question I receive: where can you find these rums?

Its a hard question to answer at times. Taking just the United States as an example, each of the 50 states has their own rules about alcohol distribution and licensing, and different distributors dont work in all of the different states. Some states make it easy to bring booze in, others are a bit more complicated and therefor dont always get the greatest variety.

If you are unfortunate enough to not live in the warm, smoggy, goodness that is the Golden State, however, your options change a bit. While Hi Time and BevMo will ship out of state, they cant ship distilled spirits to all states .

Great Selection And Oh Sooo Good

Had this cake when I visited the Caymanshad to bring one back. Couldnt find them anywhere locally and was happy that I could get it on HSN. These cakes are small, but perfect. It hits the spot and fills the bill, and each one is fresh. I cut it into 4 pieces and we have it for a light dessert or with a cup of coffee whenever. Perfect size for that. Our faves are the regular and coconut, but we havent sampled them all yet. The chocolate is good too.

The cake is so ridiculously easy to make. Dump all the ingredients in a bowl at once, mix, bake. After baking, poke holes with a fork over the top of the cake while its still in the pan, add rum sauce, invert, and repeat with hole poking and sauce adding.

If the rum cake glaze crystallizes before you can drizzle it over the inverted cake, dont panic! Just give it a good stir and drizzle away.
