This Is The Chocolate Cake

If youve been reading for a while, you know that sometimes I get real stubborn about doing certain things the right way. And theres also a time and a place for shortcut recipes and quick dinners.

Then theres recipes like this Chocolate Cake which tick all the boxes its easier than the way Ive been making everyday cake for most of my life, and the results are better.

Youll love how it really does taste of chocolate even though its only been made with cocoa powder .

Youll love how tender the crumb is, and how it stays moist for 4 to 5 days.

Youll love how the cake can stand on its own so you could just dust it with icing sugar then serve slices with dollops of cream on the side. Though of course, smothering it with frosting never hurts.

This is the famous Hersheys Chocolate Cake recipe which I tried on the recommendation of Michelle from the Brown Eyed Baker . I tried it without massively high expectations, because I thought how much better can this be than the usual, being such a simple recipe?

I love being proved wrong when it comes to food. So wrong in fact, that even though I tinkered with the recipe multiple times, I landed right back where I started using the recipe exactly as written.

How To Tell When Gluten Free Cakes Are Baked Through

Gluten free cakes tend to take a few extra minutes to bake through. This is because they lack the strength of gluten to lift the cake, leading to a cake thats just a tad bit more dense.

This density just means that the cake needs additional time in the oven to heat all the way through. To tell when its ready, always test with a toothpick in the center. If it comes out clean with a few moist crumbs, its ready. If some of the batter smears on to the toothpick, bake for another 2-3 minutes.

10 Best Moist Chocolate Cake with Cocoa Powder Recipes ...

If you dont have a baking chocolate bar, semi-sweet chocolate chips will work in both the cake and frosting. Just make sure that the amount of chocolate is the same as written in the recipe.

The amount of fat in the milk is not necessarily important. Many people feel that whole milk gives a better homemade taste to cakes however 1% or 2% would work fine as well.

If you cant use milk, you can also replace the milk with water. There will be a slightly different flavor but the cake will still have the same overall flavor and texture.

You can also use almond or coconut milk. Any substitutions for milk in this recipe can be replaced using a 1:1 ratio.

Please keep in mind that this is only for the cake and not the frosting. Whipping or heavy cream must be used for the frosting in order for it to have the correct consistency.

Does Homemade Chocolate Cake Need To Be Refrigerated

Can you store your chocolate cake at room temperature or does it need to be refrigerated?

The answer depends on how long you want to keep it and what kind of frosting you used.

Unfrosted cake can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. To make it last longer, you can tightly wrap and refrigerate the cake for up to a week or even freeze it for a few months.

Chilled cake is actually a bit easier to decorate, so a lot of cake decorators prefer to work with cold cake instead of cake that is fresh from the oven.

If you frosted your cake with buttercream, it can be stored safely at room temperature for up to 2 days. Store in the refrigerator if you want it to last longer, up to 5 days.

If you used cream cheese frosting, the cake must be stored in the refrigerator and will keep for up to 3 days.

I dont recommend freezing frosted cakes.

And remember, frosted cakes are their best the first day or two. After that, the texture wont be quite the same.

Heres a little storage cheat sheet for you:

Unfrosted cake:

  • Room temperature: Up to 3 days
  • Refrigerator: Up to 1 week
  • Freezer: Up to 3 months

Cake frosted with buttercream:

  • Room temperature: Up to 2 days
  • Refrigerator: Up to 5 days

Cake frosted with cream cheese frosting:

  • Refrigerator: Up to 3 days

No matter how you frost and decorate it, the best chocolate cake is the perfect sort of cake for a birthday or just a Tuesday. Make sure to enjoy it with a very large glass of ice-cold milk or coffee!

Does Espresso Powder Leave An Aftertaste In Your Recipe

No. I believe that there is no aftertaste in your chocolate recipe when using the right amount of espresso powder in your recipe. Again, youll want to make sure you arent adding too much espresso powder to a recipe when using it. I make sure to test, test, test my recipes to make sure that the ratios are perfectly balanced especially when including an ingredient like espresso powder.

As a matter of fact, when I was testing my chocolate cake recipe, I made the cake using a cup of coffee instead of boiling water. It left a strong coffee flavor with an aftertaste. For my next test, I tried using instant coffee granules and boiling water. Still a strong coffee flavor with a bitter aftertaste. Then, I tested with espresso powder and found that it heightened the flavor of the chocolate without adding the flavor of coffee and there was no bitter aftertaste! Eureka!

Tips For Making This Homemade Chocolate Cake Recipe

    • The cake batter will be very thin and liquid. This is normal! It also rises a lot so be sure not to fill your pans more than half full or so.

    Chocolate Cake Recipe Variations

This chocolate cake recipe has been the most popular post on for years it has been pinned hundreds of thousands of times, and for good reason! Everyone who makes it falls in love, and everyone who tastes it asks for the recipe. You wont be disappointed. Its still my go-to, no-fail, delicious chocolate cake recipe for every birthday, celebration, or Valentines Day.

Ive made many variations on it since it was originally posted, and due to popular request have shared the Fluffy Chocolate Frosting recipe to go with it. Ive also made it as Moist Chocolate Cupcakes with Oreo Cream Cheese Frosting and as Caramallow Cupcakes chocolate cupcakes filled with creamy caramel and topped with deliciously sticky marshmallow frosting. That frosting, also known as seven-minute frosting, was the way we enjoyed chocolate cake most often when I was a kid and is still probably my top choice. Another favourite way to enjoy this beloved cake is very simply with sweetened whipped cream and fresh berries.

This chocolate cake recipe freezes beautifully and Ill typically make it a few days in advance when preparing for a party. Just wrap the cooled cakes well in plastic wrap before popping them into freezer bags. Freeze them until ready to use, and you can frost them while still cold . I do make sure that its at room temperature by the time its served for best texture . If you love this one, Ive got lots more cake recipes be sure to check them out!

To Use Butter And Other Oils:

chocolate cake recipe with cocoa powder and oil

I have tested the chocolate cake recipe with additional oils, as well as butter. Ive tested using an equal amount of melted coconut oil to the vegetable oil called for in the recipe. Ive also tested using the same volume of melted butter in place of the oils in the chocolate cake. While it does make the cake texture slightly different, it is still delicious and worth trying if youd prefer to use butter in place of oils in your chocolate cake.

Whew! See what I mean! This is the chocolate cake of everyones dreams, I think!

Do let me know how you like it.

Here are a few additional ways I like to make this cake!

    Chocolate Cupcakes

If you are looking for cupcakes from this recipe, Ive shared my recipe for the best chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream frosting. This recipe makes a perfect dozen so that you can scale the recipe to make as many chocolate cupcakes as you need! Talk about easy!

    9×13 Chocolate Cake

I love this version! It is a delicious, scaled-down version that is just the thing for potlucks, reunions, tailgates, and travels perfectly! Ive also scaled-down the frosting so that has the frosting to cake ratio that my family prefers. It is a definite winner!

    Large Chocolate Sheet Cake

Scaled for a crowd, this recipe bakes beautifully in a rimmed baking sheet and is perfect for all sorts of get-togethers. Think of it as the 9×13s big brother! This recipe features Fudge Icing, but you can definitely substitute the icing for whatever you fancy!

What Is The Difference Between A Cake And A Loaf

Although made with similar ingredients, cakes and loaves aren’t the same. Here are some of the main differences:

    • How they are shaped: Loaves are baked in a loaf tin, whereas cakes can take many shapes depending on the tin in which they’re baked.
    • How they are mixed: Loaves’ ingredients are mixed separately, dried and wet, and then mixed together. Cakes’ ingredients are also mixed separately, but usually, the sugar and butter are creamed before adding other items. There is also a lot of care put into mixing the ingredients of cake to make an airy batter that results in a lighter texture. Conversely, loaves tend to be denser.
    • How ingredients are used: Many of the basic loaf and cake ingredients are alike but are used in different proportions even if the loaf can result in the same amount of servings as the equivalent cake. Loaves usually have additions like dried fruit, nuts, chopped-up fruit, or seeds.

On a side note, loaves and pound cakes are not the sametrue pound cakes only use eggs, flour, and butterjust as pound cakes and cakes are not alike. Cakes use additional ingredients like milk and oil.
