Box cakes are usually very moist, so youll only need to use a little bit of frosting for these cake pops. Its all about the frosting-cake ratio!

How To Make Cake Pops With Store Cake Mix

  • Cake mix + the ingredients you need to make it
  • ½ cup pre-made vanilla icing
  • 1 cup white candy melts
  • 1 ¼ cup purple candy melts, divided
  • 1 ½ tsp coconut oil, divided
  • 1/2 stick butter, softened
  • Saturated Fat: 2 grams saturated fat
  • Serving Size: 1 cake pop
  • Sodium: 40 grams sodium
  • Trans Fat: 0 grams trans fat
  • Unsaturated Fat: 2 grams unsaturated fat

How to cook:

  • Bake cake mix in a greased and floured 8-inch round pan as directed by the recipe. Put on hold while you wait for it to cool down.
  • Put the cake crumbs in a big bowl and stir in some vanilla icing that you’ve already made.
  • Wax paper-line a baking sheet, then roll the cake crumbs into 1-1/2 to 2-inch balls. Put it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to chill.

    Whats The Trick To Making Cake Pops

    You can use any flavor cake mix: chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, yellow, etc. Be sure to check your cake mix to ensure you have whatever other cake ingredients the mix recommends for baking.

    You will also need one container of store-bought frosting. I like to use anything with a simple texture like vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry.

    I would avoid things like German chocolate .

    1. Bake the cake according to the package instructions and allow to fully cool.

    2. Spoon the baked cake into a large mixing bowl. Add 2/3 of the container of frosting.

    In my experience, using the full container makes the cake pops a bit too soft and harder to work with once we dip them in chocolate. But, this is how you get cake pops to stick togetherwith frosting.

    3. Use your hands to mix together the frosting and cake. The cake pop batter is going to be pretty soft, but moldable.

    4. Form your cake pop batter into small balls . You dont want them to be too big, just so they easily fit in the palm of your hand.

    Once you have formed all your pops , put them in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours or the freezer for half an hour.

    5. Get your candy melts and any other supplies ready like cake pop sticks, sprinkles or other edible decorations you want to use.

    I think candy melts work best for cake pops, but you can also use chocolate chips instead.

    The mixture will be a little thicker and slightly harder to work with . And, the shell around the cake pops will be thicker once the chocolate sets.

    Making your own shapes with the melted candy is a great way to decorate cake pops. Lay out wax paper and pipe candy melts into different shapes. You can even print templates to put under the wax paper as a guide.

    Pipe 2s for a 2nd birthday, 50s for an anniversary, or motorcycles for your childs birthday. Glue them on with melted candy. So many fun options.

    How Far In Advance Can You Make Cake Pops

    Your mixture can be prepared a couple days in advance and kept in the fridge until ready to use. You can even form the cake balls a day ahead and let them chill in the fridge for easier dipping.

    If you want to prep your cake balls and freeze them, store them in a large freezer bag and keep in the freezer for up to 6 weeks. Let your cake balls come to room temperature before dipping.

    Cookie Cutter Cake Pops

    If you want to get creative, then you can use cookie cutters to cut out different shapes of cake pops. For instance, you can make star-shaped and moon-shaped cake pops for a starry night-themed event.

    Start out with your cake and frosting combination and mix the two together until they come together completely. Line a baking pan with parchment paper and spread the mixture onto it evenly until it all lays down about half an inch thick.

    You can lay some plastic wrap on top of it and roll it out to get the mixture to an even thickness.

    Next, pop the pan in the fridge for half an hour, or until the frosting hardens. Once it is out, you can use your chosen cookie cutters and cut shapes out of the mixture. Add sticks into the shaped cake pops, dip those in ganache, and let them set.

    Knowing how to make cake pops without a mold is not rocket science, but as you can tell, there are still some things to keep in mind and methods which work better than others. Making cake pops using a mold might be efficient, but it wont be as yummy.
