If you dont know what a gender reveal party is, its where friends and family get together to discover the gender of an unborn child together. The gender reveal cake has either blue or pink frosting or filling inside of it which you can only discover by cutting into the cake. If its blue, the couple is expecting a boy. If its pink, theyre expecting a girl. These gender reveal cakes are a delicious way to share the gender reveal announcement with friends and family.
Honestly, I do think these parties are fun, even if weve never done one for any of our pregnancies .
However, we have been invited to a few of our friends gender reveal parties , and all of them have had a gender reveal cake.
In fact, the last one we were invited to, they asked me to take pictures for them while they cut into the cake. They themselves didnt know whether it would be blue or pink inside! They had the ultrasound technician put the gender on a piece of paper in a sealed envelope that they then handed to a bakery to make for them!
How To Make A Gender Reveal Cake
There are many different ideas on how to make a gender reveal cake, but this ombre cake is my favorite. Its so pretty and yet simple to make.
I made a vanilla cake, divided the cake batter into three bowls, and dyed each layer with a different amount of the same food coloring. I used this soft pink gel food coloring which is concentrated so a tiny drop of it was all I needed to get the color I wanted for the first bowl. Then I added a bit more food coloring to the second bowl until I liked the color, and did the same with the third bowl.
To make things even simpler, you can dye the entire batter using the same color and divide the batter into three. This will also make a gorgeous cake.

She was then the parenting editor, searching for baby-shower trends, when she came across a charming bee-themed celebration on YouTube, featuring a homemade blue cake covered in brown icing and a sign that read, Whats it gonna bee? She wrote up a post, but neither she nor other close observers of popular culture could have predicted the madness those early cakes would unleash.

A new graduate makes the transition from one stage of life to another with a cake honoring their vast achievements.
Yes, the décor of frosting and icing has always been the star of the show, encapsulating life’s best moments and elegantly articulating them in sugary cursive. That is, until recently.
Move over icing gels and stencils, bakeries across the nation are proving it’s what’s inside that truly counts. And that’s no exception here in Minnesota. A local bakery in Edina is flipping the methods of message — putting the news inside the cake, rather than on top. They call them “baby reveal cakes” and they’re magical enough to make owner Terri Leckas feel like a fairy godmother.
The idea is admittedly quite simple. An expecting couple heads to the doctor to find out whether their life is about to be full of pink or blue. The doctor makes the proper determination, but instead of revealing the news right then and there, they put the results in a sealed envelope. That envelope then goes straight to the baker, Liz Mauricio, at Queen of Cakes in Edina.
Mauricio said it’s a special moment each time she rips the envelope open and finds out one of life’s greatest surprises.

The Easiest Way To Make Ombre Cake Layers
If you want to color the layers in an ombre fashion like I did, Im going to share my favorite way to do it!
Rather than dividing the batter into four bowls and making loads of dishes, you can color the batter right in your mixing bowl!
Add a small squirt of either pink or blue gel food coloring in the bowl and stir just until the batter is evenly colored. Scoop 440 grams of batter into one of the prepared pans.
Repeat this process 3 more times, creating increasingly deeper colored cake batter as you add in more gel food coloring.
