A classic recipe from Southern Living youre just six ingredients away from the best cake ever.

  • 1 pkg. Swiss or German chocolate cake mix)
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 10 milk chocolate candy bars with almonds
  • 1 pkg. cream cheese
  • 1 ctn. Frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 c. powdered sugar


  • Prepare cake batter according to the package directions.
  • Pour into 3 greased and floured 8-inch round cake pans. Bake at 325° for 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
  • Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar and granulated sugar at medium speed with an electric mixer until mixture is creamy.
  • Chop 8 candy bars finely. Fold cream cheese mixture and chopped candy into whipped topping to make the icing. Spread the icing between layers and on top and sides of cake.
  • Chop the remaining 2 candy bars. Sprinkle half the chopped candy bars along bottom edge of cake. Yields one cake which serves 8 to 10 people.

    German Chocolate Cake Simple Ingredients:

    4 ounces or 1/4 pound package Germans Sweet Chocolate

    White Granulated Sugar


    Vanilla extract

    The German Chocolate can be found in most grocery stores in the baking section. It is usually a 4 ounce bar. Also if you do not have buttermilk you can easily make this simple substitution. I know some people dont like to buy a container of buttermilk so this is great to use!

    Now for the delicious frosting you will need:

    White Granulated Sugar

    Pecans, chopped

    Vanilla extract

    As you can see the frosting and the cake both take eggs, which someone asked if that included the egg whites. Yes.. you use the entire egg, I would specify if it was different.

    I recently remade this cake so we could update the photos and it is wonderful! My entire family agrees this cake is a definite keeper.

    • Scoop about 1 C of the chocolate frosting into the piping bag and set it aside.
    • Scoop the remaining frosting onto the top of the cooled cake and spread evenly.
    • Unwrap the Hershey chocolate bars and place them onto the top of the frosting in rows of 2.
    • Using the frosting in the piping bag, pipe dollops around the edge.
    • Cut and serve this would be delicious with ice cream!

    So I adapted the Hersheys Chocolate Cake recipe to include vegetable oil and butter as well as an extra egg yolk to ensure the cake is moist and tender and not at all dry.

    What I love about this cake is that its so easy. And although throwing everything in one bowl to mix up a cake seems a little counter-intuitive to the precise nature of cake-making, it works so well for this cake that I dont know why we dont use this method for every cake!
