Why You’re Going To Love This Red Velvet Ice Cream Recipe
Gorgeous Red Velvet Color – The color in this ice cream comes from red food coloring, since that’s traditional in red velvet cake. The red ice cream and the white cream cheese swirl make for such a pretty scoop.
Rich Chocolate Flavor – If you didn’t know it already, red velvet flavor is actually chocolate, disguised by food coloring. This ice cream recipe includes plenty of cocoa powder to give us deep, rich, chocolate flavors.
No eggs, No Cooking – I love custard-based ice cream recipes for their creaminess and richness, but don’t think that this egg-free ice cream recipe is any less. The cream, milk, and sugar work together to make perfectly creamy ice cream without eggs.

We have a history of doing ridiculous things in the name of ice cream since childhood, right? Theres no life lesson quite like learning how to both chew gum aaaannd eat ice cream when you order Blue Bubble Gum Ice Cream . I was also master of ordering a dish of ice cream, clenching my child-fist around my spoon and stirring my ice cream a perfect milkshake consistency. Knowing when to stop stirring is key and this definitely felt just like cooking to my child-brain.
Ice cream is fun, with or without bubble gum. But really, the more playful the better because life is short and days are long and we need treats.
I put cake in ice cream because it seemed like something I would have literally jumped up and down for 30 years ago. I jumped up and down having a scoop for lunch in my kitchen because Im grown now and ice cream can be breakfast lunch and dinner if Im feelin it .
I need to let you in on the secrets of this ice cream:
Buy sugar cones at the grocery. Dig the sprinkles out of the cake decorating drawer. Its a party no matter what.

This ice cream recipe is based on this little bit of ice cream genius: Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream.
- 1 package cream cheese, at room temperature
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 scant cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon bourbon
- 2 cups crumbled red velvet cake
- sugar cones, for serving

Why do light bulbs have to be so complicated? I almost always buy the wrong light bulbs because I never know what to look for on the box. Tell me Im not alone there. Normally I dont think much about light bulbs, that is, until one needs to be replaced. And now the lights in the living room are too bright for what I really want. Which led me to doing the super boring, grown-up thing researching light bulbs.
Why are there so many options? From size and style to wattage and of course color. But even beyond that you have to know the numbers too, which I didnt until this weekend. At least now Ill know what to look for when I need new bulbs which is pretty much now since I cant handle bright white bulbs in a room that should otherwise have a warm and cozy feel.
Hopefully thats the last time I ever talk about light bulbs but Im not making any promises.
Its kind of strange to be posting yet another ice cream recipe on a snowy day, but with Valentines day less than a week away, it needed to be shared sooner than later because it needs to be part of your plans. If not for Valentines day, definitely for your post Valentine recipe plans.

Do All Red Velvet Items Contain Food Colouring In Them
Food colouring has nothing to do with the flavour and is only essentially there to make the red velvet items look more appealing and live up to their name ‘red’. Yes, most red velvet items have added colouring, but it’s not necessary to the taste. As a matter of fact, the vinegar combined with the buttermilk naturally brings out the cocoa’s red tones.
Buttermilk and vinegar is also the magic behind a softer cake, as it helps break down the gluten in the flour. Those red tones are initially how this cake got its name. If you do add colouring to any of your red velvet items, keep in mind the colouring can make the cake bitter. So, stay cautious and be mindful in adding the food colouring.
What Is Red Velvet
Red velvet is a flavor with a very subtle hint of cocoa. It also has the tang of buttermilk in its base. The texture of the cake is velvety soft and tender.
This recipe has classic ice cream ingredients like eggs to build a custard but a few that are more out of the ordinary which are more found in red velvet cake like buttermilk and red food coloring. Below is a full list of what you will need.

When I asked my son the annual birthday question, “what kind of birthday cake do you want?” and he chose Red Velvet Cake, I was not the least bit surprised.
After all, red velvet is his fave. Although, I’m pretty sure red velvet is more popular among the ‘bride to be’ set than it is with 12-year-old boys. But not many 12 year-old boys are like mine. Having been exposed to sampling an endless selection of cakes from the time he could eat solid food, this boy knows his cake! We landed on a Red Velvet Ice Cream Cake, just to mix thing up a bit this year.

How To Make Red Velvet Ice Cream From Scratch
Start the day before by making sure that the bowl for your ice cream maker has at least 24 hours to freeze solid.
How To Store Homemade Ice Cream
To store leftover ice cream, Id recommend investing in a high-quality container that can be used year round. This containeris a favorite of mine its inexpensive and doesnt take up much freezer space. Alternatively, these biodegradable containers also make for quick, sustainable storage.
Other options for storage include: Tupperware or Rubbermaid freezer-safe containers, old plastic ice cream containers , a loaf pan covered with plastic wrap, or even a pie dish!
Homemade ice cream is best consumed within 2 weeks but it can be stored for up to 4 months. The quality, taste, texture, and color will deteriorate after long-period freezer storage. Keep the container tightly sealed to prevent freezer burn and serve while fresh.
